Jay: I think social media should be basically common infrastructure that society gets to use and evolve it as society evolves, building a more democratic form of social media to reflect a democratic society.

I can’t tell u how many times my visibility was limited & account suspended on X (“the free speech platform 😏😂😂😂) for speaking truth. But that truth wasn’t acceptable to the hatful rhetoric that is rampant by the MAGA cult on X.
Musk was promoting right wing, radical MAGA, & silencing left ideology
However if majority of the society turns out to prefer Trump's idea to the ones of Harris, on democratic social media, they are likely to have majority too. Even without algorithms kicking the hornet nest.
Stock in Bluesky, the platform, isn't being sold yet. I think you may have accidentally bought Bluesky Digital Asset Corp, which is a company that does cryptocurrency mining.
Most things in life change, evolve. It's a natural progression of things.
But I sure hope it doesn't go the X route. At least not for a long while. It sure is peaceful and productive here. 🙏
Agree.
For the most part, that is going to be up to us. 💙 If we fall for the propaganda, or let ourselves get easily triggered by automated bots, sure.
But I believe in this community I'm seeing here. Let's make each other stronger. 💙
Social media as infrastructure.
What is a federated republic?
“Federal” means that there is both a national government and governments of the 50 states. A “republic” is a form of government in which the people hold power, but elect representatives to exercise that power.
I don’t think any of us want to be in an echo chamber. We just don’t want to be bullied and harassed. I think the social media platform of the future is the platform that supports their users and gives them the tools they want and not all about monetizing and exploiting their users.
For me it’s not politics. We’re country of different leanings & used to get along “okay.” It’s about courtesy & kindness. TwitterX devolved from discourtesy & snark, to verbal attacks & bullying, to predatory hatefulness, threats, & sometimes doxxing. Political disagreement per se isn’t the problem.
i think no other social platform other than mastodon started from the ground up as an open-source, decentralized eco-system
Musk promised it would open the proprietary info behind twitter, but to actually allow this information to hold power; he never intended to, and he never will
I see one major problem with that. Privately run social media sites have a lot of freedom to moderate content how they see fit. If the government runs it, content moderation can quickly become a first amendment issue. You'd get people flooding it with Nazi propaganda that can't legally be removed.
Any time that customers decide en masse that the company/product they use is not suiting them, and leave for a better version demonstrates who really has the power, at scale.
We just normally are not so good at coming to the same conclusion at the same time!
No. What you are talking about is an ideological free speech that removes emotion from the world. Free expression allows anyone to say anything they please with consequences.
You say racist things ... you are banned from social platforms. Simple.
Not really possible when the code is open source and the platform is built on an open protocol. Anyone could just set up another instance that everyone could move to and leave the billionaire holding an empty bag.
I love Jay. She's amazing. Her platform is a safe space and a safe haven. All the trolls that come over here are going to be blocked and reported and get suspended if they even dare spew any hate or bullshit on here.
in an ideal world yes, however its rather toxic elsewhere right about now , even before. Hard to listen when being bombarded from left right and centre
But I try and remain optimistic that the genuinely toxic people will be filtered out and we'd have people who'd at the very least be civil and maybe look outside their echo chambers.
Until someone like Musk or Bezos offers then 20B for it then it'll get sold. I truly hope they don't sell it but as soon as X starts hurting for real Bluesky is probably gonna get an offer they can't refuse.
Unlike closed networks like Facebook or Twitter, Bluesky is both a site and a protocol. If someone less desirable does buy the site/domain, it's set up so that other people can start alternate sites for accessing that protocol (& all accounts/posts on it). A refreshingly welcome bit of mobility.
Elonia is about to have those rules changed so he or whoever does buy it can then sue the private people hosting into the dirt. Loving Bluesky but I don't see it existing in this state in 6 months.
wait, did she just say X is an authoritarian form of social media to reflect an authoritarian society without saying, X is an authoritarian form of social media to reflect an authoritarian society?
She didn't take the bait - smart. She doesn't want to alienate users based on ideology. That said, I'm sure she understands what's driving a lot of the surge in BlueSky users.
Oh absolutely but in order for this platform to continue to thrive, it can’t be JUST left leaning politics. I’ve been saying that this place needs the arts and sports to balance things out in order to ATTRACT those people who are stuck with X who aren’t maga or just plain nuts
Absolutely. I’m just not sure there’s much incentive for those non-political users to get off Twitter. They may have built up their communities over years. Then they’re captive to Elon. He can sneak some propaganda in their following feed for example and affect their vote.
This is true. I am a mostly non-political Twitter person. I got a lot of freelance work from my time there, as well as building up a decent follower base. I haven't deactivated it, but made it private. I do see the propaganda and the vitriol and I can't stand it so I'm hoping to drum up work here
Right time... right format.... right place being social media... right on sisterhood and the power we bring to a new yet familiar way to speak freely, respectfully, honestly, one on one or one on many, the course is set for this to THRIVE GREATLY!
There is a specific optional feed, Discover, which uses an algorithm to recommend skeets.
There is not a set of algorithms downrating links, downrating keywords, artificially boosting the reach of paid subscribers, and all sorts of other sitewide clandestine things like you’d see on Twitter, et al
I just did a little research. No wonder it's a great app and feels like old Twitter. The developers are THE SAME PEOPLE who used to work for Twitter! And it's even better! They were a research and innovation team!
Looking at my feeds on different platforms I’m starting to think shutting the whole lot down and saving the massive amount of energy used to power it would be best option. Planet benefits and so would society I reckon 😀
I have a gut feeling that Musk will be too busy partying with all his MAGA masters to notice or care what happens to Twitter. He now has the power to destroy entire American government departments & institutions. He will be too busy power tripping while ruining our government to care about Twitter.
Finally, a vision for social media that isn't just about ads and algorithms but about empowering society. A democratic internet for a democratic world? Count me in! #Bluesky #SocialMediaRevolution
The ability of demagogues & autocrats to surprise, to create a new scandal every day, is their superpower. It diminishes attention to the previous day's transgressions & normalizes them. It slowly numbs the senses, including outrage. Values are the only defense. Hold them dear.
Social media is what caused all this crap. So is the 24/7 talk show hosts with guests and opinions. We have no factual news. Need to go back to 30 minutes a night
Almost all the accounts of a similar vein to Acyn post equally if not more on the other site. Which completely defeats the point.. This site will never take off and will die if they are not willing to move.
A rapidly spreading rightwing response to such a great idea is “this is NOT a democracy! It’s a republic!” 🤣 They’re so indoctrinated that they can’t understand small-d & small-r do not connote opposing teams & have different, complimentary definitions.
Saying we're not a democracy because we are a republic is like saying that because all planets aren't Earths that Earth can't be a planet; it just sounds silly.
In MAGA world dichotomy is forced because gray fuzziness cannot exist in a simplified, good-bad world view. It’s woefully inadequate in this information age and very ironic.
Yup! The government of the United States of America is a representative democracy in the form of a constitutional republic. So we are indeed both a democracy and a republic.
You’re spreading misinformation. It’s a technical reference. As in network servers/protocol. Not political leanings. Completely unrelated. Easy to find actual evidence of this fact.
And your premise is completely unrelated to technology which is how it is being used in this context. It’s like old tv antenna being called rabbit ears but it literally does not mean ears of a rabbit. Creating a federated republic of servers does not literally mean a federalist govt republic. WTF.
The last person to say this was jack dorsey before he sold twitter to elmo the oligarch and went on to have his testicles lit on fire or something along those lines. So let’s see if this time is better
I feel the partnership could also revolutionize how media players are integrated into social media, making #YouTube so seamless in-app the users feel like they never left.
This would cut down on content piracy, increase engagement, and curb data redundancy.
It's an alternative to the ignorance, free range nªzis, MAGA worshipping, RW hellscape that is Twitter (still not calling it "X) has become... not Red Dawn.
People can add ideas around enhancing the accessibility of these platforms, developing equitable algorithms, or addressing misinformation and echo chambers.

nothing happens when i click on them now, except the spinning ninny.
If you want to know what cost the last election, it's that insidious urine and it's what will kill this platform if we don't watch out.

Ending was wack af!!

The Supreme Court has also ruled that public school libraries, as a government entity, are restricted in how they can remove books, for example.

Sometimes, connection isn't the best choice, but why should we deny someone the ability to learn from others.
I guess the platform should be center(?) And the people can be what they want.
But I try and remain optimistic that the genuinely toxic people will be filtered out and we'd have people who'd at the very least be civil and maybe look outside their echo chambers.
“Hallelujah”!
Well done... indeed
Any forum that permits right wingers ends up overrun by them.
We need regulation of social media and prosecution of hate speech. Other countries do it.

I had people follow me across several platforms attacking me for simply supporting Bernie. Way before Musk

Less rage, more sleep.
“Words can only hurt you if you read then. Don’t play their game!”
and the republicans are absolutely going to come after this platform.
We need to be ready with a GoFundMe for the legal fees when that happens.

#Google could sell their service packages to Bluesky users, commercial and personal.
They could also allow #GoogleDrive servers to assign some of their space to a Bluesky PDS/CDS as a selling point.
This would cut down on content piracy, increase engagement, and curb data redundancy.
This is a win for creators as well.
I have experienced trumpism for years, up close and in your face. If you've been blessed so far to live a safe thinking area, get ready
