Green Card holders, for example, are covered by the First Amendment and other constitutional protections. They are also on a path to citizenship. Having a green card is not the same as having a student visa or H1B so don’t let the GOP pretend it is or redefine it with some new BS lesser meaning.

Comments

Green card holders have all the same rights & privileges as citizens
They work, pay taxes & support the economy

The only things they are not allowed to do are voting & serving on a jury

The 1A doesn’t just apply to a select few
This is close to true

GC holders can also be deported for violent crimes, substance abuse, and "national security" risks

This used to be non-issue for non-criminals, but we can see that the neo-fascists will say supporting Palestinian rights = supporting Hamas = National Security risk for Mahmoud
Obviously

GC holders can be deported for violent crimes.
Just like citizens can be arrested & confined to prison (unless yr name is trump) for breaking the law
Majority of GC holders are law abiding citizens

That’s who he’s setting his sights on
Yes. The nuance that you know but other readers may not is

1) GC holders can be deported for some crimes while citizens can be incarcerated but not deported

2) Without committing any crime, GC holders can be deported if they are classified as a "national security risk". This is dangerous loophole
Agreed
It's literally the "legal process" they bray about.
The constitution affords rights to everyone in the US, including undocumented migrants. See Plyler v Doe 1982. So this is not going to get you the distinction btw guests and residents that you're looking for.
They're going through the Dictatorship for Dummies handbook. If they can get everyone to be afraid of speaking out, things get easier for them. So they'll threaten, and the truth has never really concerned them.
Since when does it matter how you are here? The Constitution applies to everyone in the US.
When I was in the Air Force security service, permanent residents were considered “US persons” for intelligence collection oversight purposes.
Executive Order 12333, signed by Ronald Reagan in 1981.
I believe it is why Rubio got so emotional & ranted. It is one of his “tells”.
😳 That’s why I hate right wingers who always interpret the laws & regulations to fit their narratives! 😡
Not to take away from the overall point you're making, but it's important to stress that the first amendment applies to everyone, even people who don't have any legal status.
The "if they aren't citizens of this country they don't have any rights" is a right wing talking point, and the constitution clearly has concepts of citizenship because certain amendments specify requirements. The first amendment does not.
I just came to say the same thing! We can’t fall for this trap.
When we allow them to control/change accepted definitions, we lose. We must ensure we use consistent language and not pretend they have any merit.
I wonder if the $5mil Gold card buyers will get green cards or something else? Likely the latter, so T* won’t deport them too
I thought the constitution protected everyone, not only legal permanent residents and citizens. Is this wrong?
I don't know about people on various kinds of visas, but even undocumented immigrants have SOME Constitutional rights.
What about a student visa you didn’t use? And they you just stayed? Asking for Elonia
Everyone regardless of status is covered by the 1st Amendment. They are pushing the margin to green cards to naturalized to eventually disappear citizens. They have no other way so they must message the dismantling of the constitution.
They're redefining to oppress, marginalise and frighten. They're despicable and need to be stopped while it's still possible!
Anyone who grew up in the 80s knows this because every sitcom had a “very special episode” about somebody trying to get their green card 🙂
Green card holders can live and work in the U.S., own property, access legal protections, public benefits, and education, serve in the military, and sponsor family. They can travel but risk losing status if abroad too long.

All protected by U.S. statutes and case law.

The More You Know! 💫
I have one and now I'm worried.
Same.
Been here over 30 years but I gotta renew mine this year and am afraid to get denied. 😕
I did mine in December and it was quick. Also I didn't have to go anywhere or get new prints etc. They just sent it.
Hopefully yours will go smoothly but do it asap
before things here get worse.
Trump loves to redefine existing words/laws/traditions to suit his own narrative.
Correct. However, Protection isn’t absolute. Green card holders can be deported. Trump has argued that protesters forfeited their rights to remain in the country by supporting the Palestinian group Hamas, which has been designated as a terrorist organization. This administration is fighting jihad.
The US green card has always been coveted. I guess those days are over.
Stay strong Mehdi. You are loved & appreciated 💙💙
"An individual who is not a citizen of the United States is eligible to make a contribution if he or she has a "green card" indicating that he or she is lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the United States." https://FEC.gov on political donations.
You are very right. I was married to an immigrant who became a legal permanent resident. Only thing he couldn't do that was any different from a citizen was to vote. That was it. He had full rights to due process (even when on his student visa too, btw), etc. Trump & Co. are WAY out of their lanes.
It gets worse: this morning on Face the Nation, Rubio claimed (as if it is a forgone conclusion), that anyone engaging in protests and negotiations with a college re school endowment investments is "supporting Hamas" and therefore "a terrorist" themselves, thus justifying deportation.
I need the media to let Americans know we pay a lot of fucking money for that green card. It's a contract. We get rights and protections in exchange for a shit load of money. You don't get to act like it's a favour because we are black or brown. If you want us gone, give a refund.
Green Card holders also must report and pay taxes on their worldwide income. I wouldn't be that surprised if those who are deported now owed taxes for their future income this year.
Next it will be ANYONE that doesn't agree with him

'Free speech' and the first amendment has always been selectively applied depending on the political views of those under attack.

And it won’t be long before the first U.S. born citizen gets the same treatment.
Remember all the platitudes about how they aren't anti-immigration, they just want people to come the "right" way? It was a lie, it was always a lie, and coming after green card holders is the final proof that it's a lie.
reply
Like be best Melania and her Chain migration parents? That kind of right way
They are using Khalil as an example to silence, through fear, any green card holder (and possibly any naturalized citizen) from protesting the government. This is filthy politics.
They want immigrants to come here the "right way" as much as they want trans people to transition the "right way", which is to constantly shift the goal posts until it's impossible.😞
No it wasn’t a lie but EVERYTHING you dumb fucking libs say is a lie! Nothing about the democrat party is true…except that they lie!
Only in Lefty Loony Land?
The welcome mat is out for Afrikaners.
Soon they will try to round up all Dems!!
Yep exactly

Green card and white skin, both needed: but even that is not necessary enough, going by recent examples
I was traveling this weekend, and for the first time, I held my breath when showing my green card at the airport.

It’s why we’re moving out of the country. My life would be destroyed if my wife was deported. She’s on a green card, is a model human being and an amazing wife and dog mom. She’s leaving in June and I’m going at the end of July. She needs to make one more trip to help me bring the dogs to Japan
Just been in Japan visiting my daughter it's amazing I hope you are happy there!
I haven’t been in 4 years so but if we didn’t have our 2 dogs we probably would have already left. It’s a lengthy process to bring them in to the country
Your wife sounds like one of my best friends! She’s Japanese & has been in America for nearly a decade. Her husband and her son are American citizens. She’s a government employee, pays taxes, and is involved in her community! They’re debating moving to Japan. Safe travels for your family and pets! 💙
She is amazing, the sweetest most caring person I’ve ever met. My wife has been here 4 years and we always left the option open to go back. The way things are going I just don’t know how safe it is for her
Be safe. Be well. Best wishes.
Thank you !
My stepfather is a green card holder. My parents are looking at properties abroad this week. I hope he can get back in, as he was campaigning hard for Harris.
They’re detaining whoever they want, defying court orders. Even legal immigrants are in danger with these sociopaths in charge
Wishing you both (and the dogs) well for this transition ❤️‍🩹
Will be a change for sure but we’re all ready for it
I don’t have a physical copy of my green card yet (it’s been years since I applied for removal of conditions, and they lost the one they sent out in the mail). All I have is a stamp in my passport and a letter from USCIS, so I refuse to travel now.

It’s just not fair.
I wouldn’t put that much info out there if I were you. You never know who might be paying attention.
I thought about this, but I think it’s important to share these things for the benefit of other permanent residents, esp those whose situations aren’t as stable as mine. I’m not going to voluntarily enter federal jurisdiction, but I won't let them intimidate me into hiding either.
Keep an eye on the lady from Canada and her story being detained in Az, although she may have been moved to NM. There are too many people who are being held.
I missed this one. Could you link to an article?
Swell just saw this too. They want people living in fear. They can’t legally shut the country down from tourists or others soooo we will terrorize them.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/brown-medicine-professor-doctor-deported-lebanon-valid-visa-court-fili-rcna196638
I think she was trying to get around entry at a certian point for whatever reason and in this environment, probably not a good idea. It sounds like shes back home now.

If I had a green card I would only be traveling by car for the next 4 years.
Me too!
They're picking people up at the airports. Be so very careful.
I wonder what the emoji for sad, deep and mournful sigh could be. I would use it a lot.
Tragic.
We need a totally exasperated emoji! Hands on face, gritting teeth, wiggles lines off the head like it's about to explode. LoL
I have similar concerns for family members.
Be careful. They are coercing green card holders into signing the I-407. A few card holders have been tricked into signing this without knowing or realizing what it was.

https://www.uscis.gov/i-407
OMG!!
OMIGOD I’m so sorry!
Oh I know I have it easy compared to some.
Get out while you still can.
Or don’t leave on a green card you might not get back in
Yes. Looks like Amtrak is going to get a lot of my national travel business.
Today, it's visa and green card holders who support Palestine.

Tomorrow, it will be U.S. citizens who support Ukraine.

The day after that, it will be anyone the GQP doesn't like, for whatever reason.
reply
Exactly.
Likely their skin colour will be the determining factor.
I'm fully expecting this. We all should be expecting this.
It will be whoever has negative Trump & Musk posts Musk can track on X.
I’m sure you’re right
Exactly! During the last regime we used to go to the ICE office in Burlington, MA. They used to record us marching around the building. Everyone said they were trying to find anyone they could arrest but easy enough to do this at any protest and use it to arrest anyone anytime. No one is safe.
Exactly!!!
I keep running through my 16 years of having my green card and thinking what have I written/published/said/done/where have I worked… - what could be the excuse?
reply
Or US citizens who protested the carpet bombing of Gaza on campuses all across the country. Betar US says they have a list. They brag about using AI facial recognition software and they are giving the names to Rubio, Stephanik, and Bondi.
It’s not easy to get a Green Card you have to provide and prove information
Green cards have always been revocable.
They will go after naturalized citizens too
If you aren't apart of the hegemonic group, or passable as the hegemonic group, you will be "removed". The tolerance of the "other" isn't needed anymore, because their labour will be replaced by tech.

Ideology of eugenics, scientific darwanism and white supremacy like the "Aryan" myth of the nazis.
Melania and Musk would go then. Maybe not a bad idea. Just kidding, obviously, because many innocent people would get ‘scooped up’.
But that’s the point. That’s where the line would ne drawn because their own people would be subjects of their crusade.
They made it abundantly clear how far they’ll go when they started talking about Native Americans not being citizens. They’re setting them up for ICE if they leave their reservations. No one is off limits.
And going after AOC for trying to help people do it the right way
Just one of many lies that fooled 49% of voters.
Wait until SCOTUS waters down birthright citizenship.
There's no right way for people that aren't white (and probably Christian). If you're trying to come here and you're not pasty, you're obviously a criminal. They can't even pretend well.
It's even worse - where are they going to be deported TO? The president of El Salvador said the US can send them there and he'll stick them in his mega prison for a lower fee, even American citizens - so green card holders are included too - have you seen this mega prison?
They instituted a quota system. It's going to get MUCH worse.
TBF, everything they say is a lie.
what kills me, is that most of them look at Reagan like he's the god figure of the modern republican party. little do they comprehend that Reagan was actually pro-immigration. lol. A lot of people got the path to citizenship because of bills he passed through to grandfather people in. lol
Did, past tense, look at Reagan. This is now Trump's Party of Hate.
true
They meant "the white way "
Same as their camel-nose-under-the-tent strategy when it came to abortion.

You cannot trust a conservative motherfucker when their mouth is moving.

They will say anything to get the upper hand, then they will beat you to death with the upper hand.
Thought most people in the US, regardless of status, are covered by the first amendment and other protections? Only exemptions will be like diplomats & others specifically here on behalf of foreign governments (e.g. foreign soldiers here for training.)
Actually EVEYBODY in the US is covered by the first amendment as well as all the others. The amendments don’t restrict what the People can do they put restrictions on what Government can do.
Too late, They are breaking all the laws that you correctly define. It's a crime.
Another move to generate fear. Sadly, it's working. Until people realize that instilling fear is all they have.
First the undocumented immigrants, now the green card holders, next you and me!
Please stay on this. It is critical. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
They can do whatever they want. Trump has shown everyone that underneath the law there is nothing. There is no penalty, there is no punishment.
Surely the First Amendment applies to everyone, not just citizens?
It applies to everyone who is residing in the US. Not sure if it requires a legal residency or not.
It doesn't - otherwise, undocumented and tourists wouldn't be subject to the jurisdiction of US
*Everybody* is covered by the First Amendment. If you read through the Bill of Rights, NOWHERE does it mention citizenship. All the rights are enumerated for *persons* or *the people*.
Of course there may be other privileges for citizens, but basic rights apply to everyone.
The Constitution applies to anybody in the country, apart from those who are bound to other countries by virtue of their position (eg diplomats) who have other protections.
