I really love that Ngram thing. No idea how accurate it is. Plus I don't use it very often, so i always have to spend time finding out what it's called.
Fond memories of the word, having shouted 'Ooh, right in the goolies!' at the top of my voice, while watching Robin Hood Prince of Thieves in the cinema as a child.
Years ago, the hairy cornflake had a 'phone in' asking people to suggest songs that could be covered by The Goolies. Only one I can remember is 'tie me kangaroo down', by The Goolies.
There are so many amazing defunct words. My personal favourite is the phrase about someone being in a period of melancholy... they "got the morbs". It sounds like a Star Trek thing and I adore that.
Yes! I remember me and my sisters sniggering at the TV when they repeated Groovy Goolies when we were kids (I'm guessing mid 80s?) but haven't heard the word in a good 30 years or so.
when the Thriller video came out, I told my sister that MJ was doing a dance surrounded by goolies - I got confused between ghosties and ghouls - and to this day if he's mentioned she'll ask me if there were any goolies around
It could well have been the high water mark in this country, their disappearance bringing about the social and economic decline that continues to the present. We must bring back the goolies!
This is really odd - yesterday my brain decided to remind me of the Jasper Carrott bit about ‘I wonder if somebody from Goole is called a Goolie? What if there’s two of them?’
Comments
- In which I get caught by the ghosties.
- And I get caught by surprise.

Folks tell me I’m using it in the wrong context but I’m sticking with it.
Or two things?
Although, that depends on which nation. It appears to mean testicles in the UK, so that kinda is a societal thing.
In Australia it means pebbles or stones. So, same connotation sort of.
US is more Ghoulies, cartoon monster kinda thing.
Had the Man U Birmingham match on too
How do you get rid of a ghost?
Kick him in the ghoulies!
