If you ever get a chance to experience Hind Sight by James Turrell, I can't recommend it enough. It was the one piece I kept thinking about while watching this video.
As someone who's been afraid of the dark as long as I remember (and very much still am), I really enjoyed this video! Can't stop thinking about the bit abt fear of dark being abt "what if there's something there" "what if there's nothing there"
I apologize if it's inappropriate to suggest a game here, but i would love to hear your thoughts on Mouthwashing. It's by the same studio as How fish is made and it's stunning. The soundtrack is haunting and the game says so much in just under 2 and a half hours. Love your stuff!
while watching this vid, I realized with some excitement we both used to have the exact same fear except for one (arguably) small difference- when I was little, I was always afraid of looking out my window at night and seeing (specifically) A Bigfoot staring back at me in the dark
Oh man I love Love LOVE your 'fear of' series. I honestly hope you continue them in between your other projects, cause it really does touch on why we are so attracted to things that terrify us, especially in 'escapism' content like video games, books, and other media.
I wonder if during your research or beforehand if you’ve come across the manga Chainsaw Man?
Its idea of the “Darkness” devil is entirely unique to so much media about the darkness. The astronauts perhaps being like deep sea divers so have truly seen the void and darkness of it
That scene is great, but I think Darkness is using the astronauts to mock humanity.
"These souls who have explored the dark depths of space, these men who had such courage... they are nothing. You will fade in my darkness as they have."
Got to collaborate with a lot of extremely talented people on this. First up is Timmm, who was essentially my second-unit camera for this video. Almost all of the beautiful nighttime b-roll was shot by him. https://youtube.com/@timmm_?si=-hoTLM45M0mN1sNa
Next up is Ashley Young, who took Alice Fogel's poem "Forgiving the Darkness" and turned it into an absolutely gorgeous song. I've had it stuck in my head for weeks. (Not available on streaming yet, but will be soon)
Big big thanks to Dragan Bibin for allowing me to use his iconic painting in the thumbnail. I told him today that the video was out and he said he had already watched it on Nebula ♥️ https://www.draganbibin.com/
When you do that thing where you take a beat, and look down and to your left, are you actually looking at a tiny man with a gun, just out of frame, reminding you to MAKE THIS VIDEO EXCELLENT, OR ELSE?
Is it the Corner Man? Blink twice if you secretly need rescuing.
As a kid I literally thought that the dark made things real, hell the first image used in the video is something I remember seeing made by the dark, I still “see” the trail my arms don’t leave In midair.
Hi Jacob! I want to let you know that about ten minutes into this your use of sound design made me go "I can't handle this, I can't be getting nightmares thanks to a video essay. I'm gonna go to bed."

Keep up the good work! Can't wait for the next vid.
I was recently rewatching Fear of Cold while prepping for some winter adventures... I just love these.

Also you NEVER address it, WHAT is the thing in the back of the hall that never gets focused on?
