Every year I think about buying
1. A mechanical keyboard
2. A 3D printer
and I have to remember that I don’t need or even really want either of those things

Alas, I'm too broke to afford any kind of a 3D printer...
Seemed better on my back too.
Now I can’t imagine working without either one.
Judging by the number of custom trinkets and holders I have around my house, I have saved tens of dollars.
Definitely a need.
Okay, it's collecting dust after 1 month heavy use 😁
But I suspect it would face the same fate pretty soon in my care
1) live with anyone, and you plan to stay up later than them typing and don’t want them to hate you
2) plan to type during conference calls
3) want to type during conference calls without getting caught
don’t buy a mechanical keyboard
Got a 3d printer a DIY wood frame kit for 135€ 8 years ago too, always wanted one, i wanted one so much!
No regrets.
2. If you understand a 3D printer as a tool, like a drill, you'll find it immensely useful. Something broke? Printer to the rescue.
— written from a mechanical keyboard.
Guess it really depends on how often you order prints though. A pretty decent printer now is like $150-200.
I design my own enclosures and it’s nice being able to print as I go
I will say the learning curve is very minimal now days. It’s a little annoying they work so well out of the box, I enjoyed tinkering with my old ones.
I've considered getting a 3d printer several times but what the hell would I even use it for?
I have BIG hands. I can literally spread pinky to thumb to pinky to thumb and cover the entire length of my mechanical keyboard, much less a tiny regular one.
Insofar as keyboards I use the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum Pro and I'm quite happy with it. The thing is big enough I don't hit multiple keys by accident with a single finger.
Thankfully the hobby space I’m in abounds with 3D printers if I’m ever in the need 🤙
So no it doesn't always change your life.
Then I remember I can't think of a thing I actually want to automate.
in brazil, per example, an ender 3 pro costs about 1,25 minimum wages
Blender is free but maybe a bit intimidating (to me too tbh!)
Whatever you go for you need to able to save STL files.
It's free, open source, and has done everything i've needed just fine. I had to watch some youtube videos at first but once you get the basics it comes together. It is a little rougher on the edges than the expensive paid alternatives but eh

I'm glad my suggestion could be so helpful!
There are mechanical keyboards exactly built for this purpose 😄
sorry for the typo, lol.
Personally I use a 75% form factor to save desk space. I was worried I'd miss the numpad but after a few weeks the space > numpad (and I use excel A LOT).
✌️
Best decision I ever made. I'm using a Corsair K95 RGB Platinum Pro, and it's freaking wonderful.
Every single reply: “here’s the mechanical keyboard that works for me, and it’s really cheap, here’s the link to buy”
1. I don't need a new gaming setup
2. I need to buy healthier good
3. I don't need a glass bottle with my name carved on the side in lucida handwriting
4. I need up my savings
5. I don't a $500 headphones
6. I need to improve my gpa.
Mechanical keyboard just feels good man, go for it!
Always 3D printer vendors there & I ask them the same question, "What is a compelling use case so I can justify buying one?" because I really want one.
They SELL them and THEY don't have one. 🤷♂️
- toys (latest one: Dummy 13)
- inserts or upgrades for board games
- custom size boxes (e.g. to fix exactly a drawer)
- tools/jigs
Do I really need it? No! Do I regret my purchase? Also No!
It's really a lot of fun!
🙏🙏
it's great for hobby stuff and dedicated projects, but as a thing to just tool around with, it's more work than you think it is.
Resin is best for small items, Filament better for larger ones.
Sadly 3d printers in general aren't very 'plug and play'...
It’s hereditary.
I think it’s like a boat. Nobody should have a boat, but everybody would love a friend with a boat.
Also 3d printers are now super cheap, Bambulabs make excellent ones at entry level prices. real question is why not buy one?
Howard: You don't understand. It's not just to make a doll. We can make LOTS of dolls.
Just last week I printed a new tooth pastor dispenser, a modified cup holder for my car, and a little Knick knack for my gf.
Presumably, you use a keyboard on a daily basis. A good mechanical keyboard improves quality of life. The more you type, the more your fingers will benefit from it, and the more productive you will be in general.
Whereas 3d printers are a hobby.
But I get what you’re saying
and keyboards are famously in danger of becoming a hobby
I almost always have a print going. Easy way to make friends with people too lol.
I tell my coworkers to check thingiverse for whatever they want and I’ll print it out. Most of the things I print are for other people.
Now I'm looking at ergo chairs and my bank account cries
I do regret my resin 3d printer purchase. It was very difficult to make it work (but impressive when it did), the clean-up and fumes was unpleasant and time-consuming
:)
You’ll have plastic bits all over your floor and so many random Knick knacks you start giving them away to friends who probably just toss them anyways.
Amazing hobby.
I had the parts to build a custom delta printer, but life got in the way and I sold them to someone with a print farm.
And I would totally use a 3d printer (mostly for dnd figures)
Keyboard is awesome, been using it for years
With the printer I could print small replacement parts for arduino robots
Recentstarted to build one with my son.
If you are thinking about it every year... 😃

My 3D-printer is cool, though.
