https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kq5l0MT_Ivg "And in my dreams, you're alive and you're crying" is such a devastating line, and almost jarringly lucid being otherwise surrounded by such abstract lyrics
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMlQUM9aROc Fucking destroyed me when I bought a CD with it on when homesickness started setting in on my Japan trip a decade and change ago.
This always gets my imagination running wild. Just envisioning a heartfelt end to an adventure. Like all the people met along the way listening or watching an event and reacting. Those old school anime movie credits where its peeps just loving.
Over the past 15 years or so I've buried an incredible amount of people, including both my grandmothers, and my father. People say you get used to it but you really don't.
https://youtu.be/L7BJkn1Poew?si=2xO81KCbyRpwVkJi ough,, this one for sure, especially bc of who introduced me to her music and how much this specific track hit regarding our situation.. it's so pretty and beautiful but so bittersweet and wistful..
And with getting punched in the stomach twice with the loss of Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto, there are still quite a few songs of theirs that will just make me cry. Yukihiro Takahashi's "Betsu-Ni" will make me cry immediately. I'm crying _right now_. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rea2fjpaSMI
as someone who still deals with the loss of their mom i absolutely get the importance of when you dig your heels into a song that really gets into all that
https://youtu.be/hVL5uHPi4Wg?t=520 specifically THIS arrangement of "Prisoners of Fate" (Chrono Cross) is enough to get my eyes watering just thinking about it
but, BUT, at the 11:00 mark it weaves in with To Far Away Times to pull out of the sadness and--
Really sweet lovey songs usually get me super emotional to the point of crying. “Sweet Time” by Porter Robinson and “Pink In the Night” by Mitski are big ones. On the other hand, “Beyond the Grey Sky” from 311 gets me really emotional due to subject matter. It’s such a bittersweet song but I love it
unfortunately the prerequisite for a like 45 second piece of music hitting is an entire 90-minute movie but the score shift at the end of phantom of the paradise makes me well up every time
you already shared one of the vashti bunyan songs that gets me so uh.. some things cosmic by angel olsen, also theres a few older feist songs that get to me.. i have an endless supply of sad folk music i can send you if you’re ever in the mood for that lol
It’s about leaving home to seek your fortune in the city, feeling sad and homesick and giving up, then going back home and realizing it can never feel like home again
Auld Lang Syne; it makes me think of the end of my memories and the end of friendships and whether or not I'll be able to see everyone I loved ever again once I or them pass on, about how short life is, and if there is an afterlife https://youtu.be/Z3sXVxqDbFk?si=RnE6A86lmrkcOuXu
this one i can't listen to anymore, this was the song that played when me and my mom took Rocky to the vet and got the final word that there was no hope anymore https://youtu.be/wNcz5AagtaU?si=UXiPx4Mb4fTMOPyH
crooked smile is about self love, and the chorus of On My Way down for me is not so much alluding to coming down and being done with the bathroom mirror, but for the coming of Abba Father who will love us unconditionally https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=fKg2nITWDRU&si=NWLYEOrPazQ8WsTR
Challengers - The New Pornographers
Brick - Ben Folds Five
Anonanimal - Andrew Bird (in the right mood)
Jumper - Third Eye Blind
Blue Lips - Regina Spektor
And for goofy "man I miss being a kid" reasons - the original Pokemon anime theme lol
I discovered this remix when I was a teenager, and thought it was pretty. Avien, the musician who remixed this, was the same age as me; he passed away in September 2004 from a car accident. So, it's hard to make me cry, but this one always makes me a little sad. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLVgjy9l4NI
cant respond to all of these posts but DAMN yall understand the crybaby assignment!!! thank uuuu i am simply a weepy bitch and i love when music really squeezes that nerve
my cringe is that I get weepy over orchestral video game medleys, I'm sorry if you were looking for quick jams for the playlist, but I'm not sorry because that particular medley rips. if you like Chrono games.
consider this me liking every response bc i cant go thru and like em all but i am finna chew on this thread soon......everyones got a different tune that hits em uniquely in that heartfelt spot. its nice to hear what gets yall
this one always gets us too... i think this has to be my go to with sza's crybaby (ironically, but almost anything sad of hers does it) as a followup. https://youtu.be/xuZDP6uSD-Q
It's rare that an OST has gutpunched me as hard as this track hit, especially in context. (if anyone hasn't played Kentucky Route Zero please do; it feels so relevent this current moment of american decay)
feels corny to admit this but smalltown boy by bronski beat hits me in the feelings every time i hear it. i was a queer runaway teen once so it just Gets Me
this one came out a few days following my brothers passing a while back. felt oddly relevant for my life at the time, but it pulls my heart out and smashes it out on the ground. real fun! highly recommend.
There's also some like classics, Sound of Silence, "Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground", Hurt but Johnny Cashs version, Sonata No 14, and Mad World.
Oh god, this one already kicked my ass just from the bittersweet nostalgia for my teen years but after he died the way he did, it became pure emotional kryptonite
that was the answer for me for many years, but since making this post I've done some re-evaluation and I think within the last few years sometime it's actually become this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vkfpi2H8tOE
i dunno, this moves me deeply. feels like i accidentally glimpsed into something unspeakably beautiful too briefly (the buzzing sound is an ibm 1401 computer which actually has no sound but it can be make sound through its machine parts) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a61K-RYCLRM
the fact that its based on the music his father made on computers that weren't made to do that makes it beautiful and that johann johannson has passed away make it tragic imo.
"Child of Snow" from Miu Sakamoto, daughter of Ryuichi Sakamoto (Yellow Magic Orchestra), who seems to have been the producer on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npJ5mamoHhE
...And since it's the season, "Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence", which Sakamoto composed for an 80s movie of the same name. It was an international co-production that he starred in with David Bowie.
time to reach into my playlist labelled ":("
idk what it is about this song but it always reaches into my emotions, something about that performance within this imperfect mix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pnHPVblO9g
I post the audio version here, but the music video brings the song from tearjerker to full on sobbing moment. And I can't stop thinking about that mv whenever I hear it now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4Oz8UmUXbg
I'm basic as hell, I cry to Mitski and vocaloid music. and like, clair de lune is what video essayist types pull out when they wanna look smart, but the Kamasi Washington version is my go-to when I need to believe it will be okay
(cw for mentions of dv)
i can think of a million, but anything where dave bayley sings from the pov of a kid witnessing an abusive relationship and what it does to his mother is just a gutpunch. this one and show pony both do me in.
Everything from Frightened Rabbit makes me emotional but The Loneliness & The Scream was their first song i ever heard and it hit me real hard. Modern Leper is a close second https://youtu.be/X1Lf7mriehU
casimir pulaski day could also make this list given that its made me need to duck into a public restroom stall to sob at least twice, but the opening notes of predatory wasp actually invokes a pavlovian reaction in me. the sound of that dainty little flute makes me AUTOMATICALLY shrink back in fear
At blfc 2016 Knox played this and it was the first time I’d heard good music at a con and it felt like I truly was somewhere I belonged, a few days later I was listening to it on my headphones at work when my mom called to tell me my dad died, it’s been so different to me since https://youtu.be/ETDCbQUYiAQ
For similar reasons (song about a family member passing) this one always gets me and theres an amazing live performance from a few years ago where the fromtman talks about what lead him to write it beforehand too https://youtu.be/GPhLJWRa80I
this one rly takes me back to being a young w/ unrequited romantic feelings. I took the boy i was crushing on to their show a decade ago (we both loved them, it was a 6 hr road trip) and got a pic of him with the band + his vinyl sleeve signed and never told him how i felt https://youtu.be/1arEwj9dknE?si=nyuJh_7FEz3h3Ftw
There are a few SLS tracks that rly hit for me but this one i belt the lyrics out to anytime it comes on in the car and i tear up each time without fail https://youtu.be/wwA8P9Q1j_o?si=whwELMoojpIeveV7
