@bsky.app i love being here!! But please Do address the fake accounts problem- (example Liz Cheney). Perhaps a symbol for verified accounts of known persons- as the blue check once was on Twitter. Thank you

Really...a blue butterfly instead of a check.
Don't let "nobodies" like video game streamers or "influencers" have them. Only real celebs, politicians, VIPs etc.
I'm of a different mind. Most celebrities don't write in their social media themselves but some do. So I don't think it really matters as far as that goes. Nothing in the digital world is 100% safe no matter what you believe or have been told. You will know or should if the person posting is genuine
The MAGA King got his legal cases dropped. He will now play golf, and hand the country over to his family of idiots. He will sit back and just grift like a mob boss, and get a daily headline and tell America everything is amazing now
I also wouldn't mind if they had something like Reddit. Some upvote downvote action on new accounts
Because the fake account thing isn't limited to famous people. Both of those accounts and the pretty girl accounts are both meant to part you from your money (catfishing)
They have a list and are verifying accounts. I have it on my profile where I shared the post. You have to subscribe to their list and it will add marks to verified celebrities and media, so far.
I think they will eventually. I'm not sure they expected so many people at once. I'm giving them some breathing room but I'm confident they'll come through.
Plus I’m now getting a lot of porn accounts liking my posts and following me. I block them but it’s increasing everyday. Had the same issue on the bad place
But it would be nice to make sure people are who they say they are, like newspeople factchecking, or local govs giving things like official transit and traffic reports.
Welcome! Great to have you over on bluer skies! Definitely need a verification plan - they only one right now is if you have a website that you host and I cannot get that to work for myself.
Sit tight I am sure they are working on something! Have seen so many requests for it especially since there have been a lot of fake accounts being shared thinking they are the real deal.
If you have a URL associated with your handle, you can update your handle and DNS records with the URL (I.e. @npr.org is a “verified” account because the DNR records can only be accessed by that URL owner associated with the user with that handle). Translation - look for .com, .org., etc in the name
Nonsense, that was the start of Musk's interference with Twitter and look where it got him. There is no place for elitism on a public platform. You so-called celebs are no more important than the rest of us !
I believe I saw a post that talked about that becoming an option by the end of the year. Along with a possible paid subscription service and content creator incentives.
Happy to help anyone who needs instructions on setting this up. I’m also available as well to help perform this setup for anyone not technically inclined.
Does it really matter ? If they start posting garbage, then you just unfollow. It seems like people are more concerned with their follower status on here, and less about posting the stuff that got them the following in the first place.
I’m a very small account, but within a week of signing up here, someone made a fake account using my description and photo and “Campbell-Chellie” as a handle. THEN tried to scam money out of my connections!!
I agree fake accounts should be addressed, I have a Chris Evans following me, I reported it! I like accts not having “blue check marks”. I feel like somebody over here, even though my account is small.
Agree, I had a fake @atrupar.com DMing me saying he was the real Aaron Journalist (same profile pic) and that he has two accounts, one for journalism and another to mingle with people. Hopefully we will be able to see some distinction between reals and fakes soon.
It seems trivial but Bsky only has 20 employees.
The fake accounts are easy enough to spot.
Report for impersonation and block and move on.
I have blocked Elon Musk 12 times already.
Love it more every day, but agree! Interesting people and a decided lack of Nazis. First place I've ever tried to get followers. Feel free to follow, cool folks. Happy to FB!
Clearly this is a huge problem, would be nice with a fix. Something that doesn't cost anything but time, as not everyone real can pay, and those with the means to make all these fake accounts, don't care about a cost.
I second this request @bsky.app. It would be great to have verified accounts. Just please don't do what Twitter did and give them away for money. When Twitter did that it negated the value of the verification.
Hi Ms. Farrow, just want to say I loved your performance in The Purple Rose of Cairo. Movie lovers everywhere can empathize with your portrayal of someone in thrall with the silver screen.
Idk, I like there not being ✅s- maybe I’m traumatized from Twitter after they made the ✅s for sale & bots took over. Though I understand the problems that come with a lack of ✅s.
Maybe just like they put “spam” or “rude” on pages when u click them they have the option of verified
I’m so glad to be on here too. I deleted my X account about 11 days ago after being on there since 2011. I don’t miss it the way it is now. I’m happy you’re on here too Miss Farrow.
Having a verification check would be a great improvement. However, given the incredibly fast development of this platform, we must understand that it may take some time before it can be implemented.
Meanwhile we must collectively remain cautious, as always but particularly in these turbulent times.
There is already a way for well-known people to verify their accounts by hooking them to their websites. I disagree with the blue checks or even little blue butterflies. I also think it's fairly easy to determine the fakes.
Hi Mia, I think one of the ways to do that for now is to make a personal domain like a personal website show in your display name, as only you have access to its setting to be able to authorise it... I have no idea how it works, but it changes the ".bsky.social" to whatever your website domain is.
You don't need to have a website to have a domain. The domain could point to a website or it could point to nothing and be used for verification on here
You don't need a web site per se, you just need a domain. You could have no website at all, or redirect the web traffic to some other site. They are working on a way to register a domain through Bluesky strictly for this purpose. It’s an open way to provide authentication and portability.
Thabks, but how does that work exactly? So for example I get a fictional domain "NaffNaffBobFa.ce" and someone else decides it's worth paying for a domain to spoof me and gets "NaffNaffBobFace.co", how does that make mine more authentic than theirs?
Think of the domain as one of many trust signals. Mia doesn't have a web presence, but she does have an Instagram she could link to in her profile. She is followed by other prominent accounts. No one signal is a guarantee.
The domain also gives you portability to move to compatible services later.
People have to learn better media literacy and critical thinking. A brief scan of posts from this account tells me it is more likely legit than not. No amount of name verification is going to help if people want to blindly trust or distrust what they see. It’s tricky.
It doesn't on its face. It means that @xyz.tld here is xyz.tld on the web. And that someone with a username that doesn't match their handle (domain) is suspect. You can look up the ownership for domains, it is public information. That said it can be made private.
Nothing says "scammer" louder than "official" in the handle ... LOL. Sorry to see that these accounts still have followers who fall for these schemes and give them false validation. :(
Ah well, at least there's another account I don't have to hunt for but can inst-report. :)
We have to be patient as the team over at @bsky.app tries to keep the platform up and running after the massive influx of users. In the meantime, let’s keep flagging fake accounts to help them and users!
Totally agree, fake accounts spoil this just like Twitter, needs to be better moderated.
I mean I’m 72, dirt poor pensioner so why on earth are young girls with obvious fake profiles contacting me. Not needed
so F O .
I don't really care to follow celebrities, I don't really idolize anyone but a couple of scientists and I'd be able to tell a fake account fairly easily once they start promoting stuff I know goes against everything their career has built over the past 5-10 years.
The verification system is different. People can add custom domains to their name. You should see quite a few if you look for them. Government employees will most likely have a .gov domain.

they do a, ☀️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A benefit of this is letting people like me, who are not famous in any way, still get "verified".
They do need to do a better job at communicating this though.

Just keeping the lights on is the priority at the moment.
People can follow your domain handle to your website and verify that you are authentic. It’s actually way better than a check mark.
