It would be fun for Studio Ghibli to sue OpenAI, mainly because it would be a good narrative bookend to this horseshit and because anybody on OpenAI’s side would be a freak. It’s the weeb version of getting sued by Santa Claus.

Yeah! I had the same reaction first time I saw the news, sounded pretty contradictory.
Technically you can't use AI for "sole enjoyment" only for "training and analysis" but the most interesting thing is that, this term would fall on the users and not the company that trained the data
that last bit makes more sense, explicitly protecting the companies from being held accountable for usage of their tools/putting the responsibility on the users. that's about what i'd expect
I agree they should sue solely on principle, but the weebs supporting this don’t give a shit about Miyazaki - everything exists only for their own personal gain or convenience, no higher value or meaning.
They would all turn on Miyazaki in an instant, they are utterly without culture or standards
Once all those incels on Twitter made the Taylor Swift porn and the swifties still weren’t able to make enough noise to start the ball rolling on regulation, I knew we were stuck with this shit for good
A million ppl have made this point since AI ppl have done the “it looks exactly like (fill in the blank, Wes Anderson etc)” but a good 75%+ of the stuff they’re claiming “looks like ghibli” does not even look remotely like it. Bc these ppl do not know or care about art
The point is less that it actually looks convincingly like that, I bet a lot of the art they trained on was fan art, it’s more that it convincingly lines up with the public idea of what Ghibli is in broad terms and the guardrails that previously existed to prevent these prompts are now off.
Yup. Also ghibli is such a bizarre case for the idea of ghibli’s art to be based on an audience conception of the art bc the lady 20 years that has been cozy and delicious pics and gifs from aesthetic blogs haaa
Even more broadly you also have the CEO of a company using your brand name to promote undercutting your brand using a dogshit facsimile of your art. It’s really just insulting on every level.
I mean Sam Altman namechecked “Her” and then spoofed scarlet johansens voice for an AI assistant. They’ve already stolen everything stealable for their slop machine, they believe they own everything and think we should thank them haaa
Right but under pressure they subsequently dropped that voice and freaked out when Johansson made a big deal about it, and this is far more brazen and actionable.
Yeah I think the actual argument here isn't even copyright, its trade dress protection under trademark law. It seems like a slam dunk to argue that these products can and will be confused in the mind of the average consumer with official Studio Ghibli commercial products.
Yeah but Disney('s current management) probably thinks of AI slop as something they'd like to be using themselves, so I wouldn't expect much from there.
I hope they do because, since trained AI data is inextricable from other data there isn't a way for them to "just remove the ghibli data". The entire pot would be tainted. I've been waiting to see someone try it for ages, but if having CP in the data didn't get it deleted, I dunno
Hell, I remember when Suede got in all that shit with Shopro for reviewing the Pokémon anime. Even though he edited the episodes, put filters on them, the whole kit-kaboodle. Shopro was out for his BLOOD.
It would be more fun for studio ghibli to create a hand-rendered and beautifully-told story with the sole intent of completely emotionally destroying sam altman such that he gives up the whole enterprise and lives out his days in regretful sadness.

And that movie was so strangely handled that the poster is an absolute trip.
They should be sued out of existence.
