well yeah, you have to be ready to ignore at least 28% of all wars if you want to enjoy something american. it's called suspension of all-those-things-i-learned-in-highschool
Civil rights was Johnson’s legacy. We fought a defensive war in Vietnam they just waited us out. Same in Afghanistan, they just waited us out. 69/70 Dong Ha mtn firebase fuller.
What do you believe it or not Vietnam was my era and we didn’t see Johnson any good light but like everything time proved us wrong. It was actually a very good president.
I rewatched Apocalypse Now recently and realized the Lance character, who effortlessly switches between personas as the story progresses, has the initials LBJ and I've been wondering what the fuck Coppola meant by that ever since.
Yeah but the sonovabitch captivates me as an actor. Like at face value, he seems like he should be terrible, but for some reason he just isn't. It's like Randy Quaid is like his Dorian Gray portrait or something.
Go to the LBJ presidential library if you want to see a real smooth rendition of what the Vietnam war was actually about according to their history. Good times.
Bit of irony in portraying LBJ ... plenty of conspiracy nutters out there that will tell you that LBJ was involved in the assassination of JFK and more still that will tell you Woody's father was one of the shooters. Enjoyed the movie though - wonder how history would treat LBJ sans Vietnam?
Perhaps via the disclaimer 'fictional' but for someone who was there I can vouch that it definitely catches the mood and tosses in a seasoning of satire.
LBJ was the first US President I met (at 10), and I had the opportunity to work with Ladybird on bringing an El Greco exhibition to Dallas (when I was 30). She was amazing. He was, well, unique - the first adult I ever heard use profanity.
He was a strange dude. He once went up in a helicopter and flying over fields used a megaphone saying to vote for him. Most had never seen a helicopter and thought it was God telling them who to vote for and did.
That movie sounds immensely more positive/fictional than the historical documentary “Fog Of War” w/ 2hrs of Rob McNamara giving you brass tacks
Do not think I can despise LBJ more, but Woody will give it a go I’m sure.
Recommendation 🙏🏽
When I lived in a gang house we all watched Apocalypse Now and Taxi Driver together and started dressing like Travis Bickle with army surplus gear and mohawks for a year or so....
Love your work. May I start a cousin podcast to Behind the Bastards called Behind the Bootlicking Blackguards: the Trump Cabinet. Multiple episodes a week. Tons of research. Two hosts who trade off being the researcher.
Excluding that war, which he inherited, he was a brilliant politician and a man of conscience. His Civil Rights Bill turned the South Republican, but he knew it had to be passed.
Do they depict the Johnson Treatment because I’d love to see Woody Harrelson looming over a guy mumbling sweet nothings and vague threats into his face.

How ‘The NYT’ Whitewashed the 1968 ‘October Surprise’—and Why It Still Matters: Ever since Nixon and Kissinger undermined the Vietnam peace talks to win that election, politicians have used militarism abroad to defeat domestic opponents.

I should probably read Heart of Darkness.
But that is genuinely a very funny joke, and well crafted. Honestly, there should be some small reward for that.
But there isn't
