“Merit” is subjective. What may have use to one person could be useless to another.
Basing our entire society off of whose life has “merit” and whose doesn’t is one of the problems. Who gets to decide who does and doesn’t have “merit”? What gives them the right?
the way to unlock this is to remember that these people believe it is axiomatically true that a black person in a position of authority or prestige did not get there through merit
While they simultaneously look at a white man that somehow managed to bankrupt a goddamn casino and say "wow, what a genius! and he's super muscular and fit, too!"
They are the exact product of American exceptionalism and completely devoid of the critical thinking they constantly brag about.
Yes. The West Wing, while a good show with great performances and some superb writing, was also filled with right wing nonsense like this. I think it's CJ's dad who keeps getting passed over for promotions because of less qualified minority applicants. Ugh.
This is a huge challenge for women and POC in public facing jobs (university presidents, political candidates...) Since a significant fraction of the public is primed to believe they are less qualified, it's much easier to damage their reputations.
So much - I will never scrub from my mind the stark and nauseating contrast between the Judiciary Committee GOP's treatment of Ketanji Brown Jackson and Brett Kavanaugh at their respective confirmation hearings.
Yeah, I really could have done without (overwhelmingly white) pundits lining up to praise Jackson for her "poise" and "dignity" in the face of hours of insults as if a woman of colour would ever get a pass for pitching a public tantrum like Kavanaugh did.
On Earth-2, I'm 💯certain Jackson's nomination was dead and buried the instant she insulted a white male Republican and threatened retribution against anyone who crossed her.
They don't apply this to black conservatives, though, even though there's plenty of evidence that Clarence Thomas rose to SCOTUS because George Bush needed to find the nearest black conservative to fill Marshall's seat.
Thomas was literally the only Black conservative sitting on a federal circuit court at the time of his appointment and he had only been appointed the year prior.
Luckily for me, I roomed with a black guy in college who was way smarter than me. I knew from that experience that he was always going to be more deserving of positions of authority or prestige than I was. So when Obama arrived I wasn't a guy clowning himself by saying he wasn't very smart.

The thing that scares me is how much crazy woo woo shit they're bringing on board to justify it, it's like literally nothing else matters but that.
