"And so it goes through the tiers, with a "complete walkthrough" of a video game, something that would take hours upon hours to play and then involve writing 7000 words, paying just $150. If it's 10,000 words or more you get $250."

I don’t remember some of the other rate cards but they weren’t far off from these 20 years ago

I supported myself with some games writing back in college. A review of Kiss Psycho Circus on Dreamcast for $80 was my breaking point. The math on how long it would take me to play it through, then write about it...nope.
One second, I'm being handed a note.
and to those who did so out of frustration at the low pay on offer at some exploitative networks, it fucking sucks, im sorry
1) in 2006 i made $10 per kotaku post, and had a guideline of 10 per day. Some of those could be quick trailer embeds or screenshot galleries though, it wasn't TERRIBLE money.
2) non-games outlets still pay. my last two pieces (in 2024) made $800 and $1000 respectively.
"How would you like to write for us for ~$5 per hour?! We also pay in exposure ❤️"
