And remember, the US is putting tariffs up to 3500% on South Asian solar panels so we can be “competitive” instead of just investing heavily, importing them and radically changing our power supply
No. China is doing everything in its power to prepare for an invasion of Taiwan. The more self-sufficient they can become, the more willing they are to attack Taiwan.
The "global north" needs to invest tens of trillions in green energy and permanently get off oil/gas.
Won't happen, but I suspect China will be happy with owning the markets.
Speaking from a European perspective, I can already see Huawei's hybrid battery systems being deployed for grid frequency regulation (which enables more PV), and CN EVs will eat the automotive market over the next decade.
For a long time, the excuse not to take more radical steps was “China’s such a massive polluter that anything we do won’t even make a dent in the problem,” which is a bad argument for a lot of reasons, but I love that it’s being taken away from them.
This is my take. I'm not nearly smart enough or informed enough to fully understand china's economy and how socalist/ not socalist it is. But it's very obvious their relation to captial is fundamentally different from ours in the west and that is a good thing.
an oversimplification but it is a socialist economy within china but when dealing with the global capitalist economy they are to compete and play by the rules of capitalism. so state capitalism outwards and socialism inwards
miss jpg you're smart, you're a climate scientist. if i may, please help me understand why in the middle of summer in the year of our lord 2025 when it feels as if i am getting beaten up by the sun that i am told by various weather sources that the temperature in my area is in the low 20s?
western liberal chauvinist never want to talk about per capita or cumulative emissions, or the fact that fossil-fuel based development was foisted on the global south by capitalists
YES but also just keep in mind they are still building a huge number of new coal power plants too, vs US is actually closing down coal plants (tho Trump is trying to keep some open)
South Africa sees China as an ally but not a role model, as coal continues to pollute our skies & solar faces daily new regulations. The latest is that national electricity supplier will use satellite imagery to find installations at homes they are not aware of.
Sorry to rain on this parade but China still gets almost 60% of its energy from coal, only a small drop from a few years ago. Renewable energy covers its immense additional need.
Please rain, it's good to get other views. If I understand correctly, they are actively working to reduce emissions/pollution, and expand solar. This is unlike our lot that seeks more ways to hinder adaptation of solar. I also see their 50 year vision in planning (I'm not an expert just an opinion).
We were in China more than 10 years ago. You did not see a single incandescent anywhere. Everything was LED. At UP you have people who block LED installations cause "we don't maintain leds".
They certainly are, but that seems to be a question of industrial policy rather than environmental concerns. The economy *very* much comes first. Still, it's a good thing that they're determined to leapfrog the energy transition. I'd even take sensible industrial policy in SA!
I would agree 100% it's not the environment. They do what is good for them, and look good for them. They certainly don't care about the environment in Africa, and the ANC is being led by their noses.
yeah surely its just no new plants but i also think i’m confused about what exactly the chart shows. when they say cumulative i thought it meant it should show all power generation, but then where is coal?
This is nothing about China but Hydro often isn't actually very green. Usually dams are installed that disrupt rivers to the point of ecological collapse, not just the river but the wetlands and deltas that relly on them
There was a report recently on green energy production/additions that, from what I understood, basically said at this rate China will be net zero within like 1-2 years
common Chinese W, but also, our attention is divided between two monitors and it was very confusing to misread the title of this graph as how China's powder mix is changing. they're putting *what* in this powder, now?
Be nice if it were that simple, but at least they are nmaking headway into sustainable energy, even if it happens to be based on national energy security over an effort to save the world (which are.. infuriatingly.. complimentary...)
China: Recognizes their emissions output and begins projects to both reverse their own and other nations output, leading the movement against global warming
Liberals: "Okay but have you considered China bad?"
According to the site you have linked, China are producing considerably less CO2 per capita than the US, and have decreased their emissions over the past year (marginally) whereas the US have increased theirs. So I don’t think this is a strong counterpoint.
probably exaggerated anecdote time from me. one time i heard that a canadian startup making diesel electric trucks (idk) went to China and toured an electric truck factory- as the ceo said the company was open about their designs and production because the idea is that everyone should work together
a point that i heard a youtuber put up a few weeks ago was that china 'took over' manufacturing from america and europe because they spec'd hard into tool and die, making the molds so that overseas everyone would have to buy the proprietary elements. MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE EDUCATION SYSTEM THERE
The most surprising part for me nuclear energy. China could be the best case scenario for nuclear energy development with their ‘we’ll do what we want and where we want it with infrastructure’ attitude.
This is good but it shouldn’t be misinterpreted as China reducing their consumption of fossil fuels. They’re still consuming more than ever, they’re just generating and using more power overall and the renewables component is additional to, not substituting, energy generated by fossil fuel.
They are the only major nation on target with 4/5 of their IPCC climate goals. Their energy consumption would have increased regardless and the world will warm significantly less because of their efforts in a 4 year time span. I don’t think they are planning on stopping
Yup, in general it looks like this has allowed them to largely cap further fossil fuel demand. Their coal consumption went up slightly but oil and gas declined over this period. Hopefully this is a transitional point and their fossil consumption will begin to decline from here on.
If our politicians actually cared about things like national security, they’d be doing the same - reducing the dangers of global warming and establishing energy independence just make sense - but financial security for their donors is a higher priority.
most china figures and charts are fake western numbers.,..go and look in china with whats really happening..they Lie more than trump does..Fake and facade..
Lota xenophobic racism. There are some examples of Chinese infrastructure being cheap and shitty but that's mostly do to the dengist reintroduction of capital. Even still China is 100x better than the west
Solar installation is high..most dont work, all the land thats its put on is destroyed and not enough water in china for drinking never mind for anything else...the place is f**ked
I also heard there is not enough food there so 600 trillion peasants die everyday, and the ground spits fire and ice rains from the sky, all the fault of evil ccp
If you have access to information which has escaped the notice of international bodies, investigative journalists, financial institutions, investors, foreign governments etc shouldn’t you be a billionaire?
why would "fake western numbers" want to make china look better than they are. what the fuck does "fake western numbers" mean to you here. do you think they don't have the same numbers as us in china. what's the deal here.

The "global north" needs to invest tens of trillions in green energy and permanently get off oil/gas.
Literally no downside.
Speaking from a European perspective, I can already see Huawei's hybrid battery systems being deployed for grid frequency regulation (which enables more PV), and CN EVs will eat the automotive market over the next decade.
- person who still can’t pronounce that word properly.
Still nice they're doing that but its worth mentioning the utter flaws to their capitalism, one that is complicit in israel's genocide. ❤️
Chona would still be a poor nation

Idk why people are scared of China because of what Trump did to Iran..
I believe it to be fear mongering
Worse than dams' impact on the environment is thr impact of knocking dams back down...

Liberals: "Okay but have you considered China bad?"
Leeroy. Have you ever heard of a place called Flint, Michigan?
You cant just lie like this and expect people to believe you because "china bad"
