Let’s say you’ve magically procured $1 million a year, but there’s a catch:
You can’t spend it on yourself; you can only invest it in your local community to make it better.
What sorts of things would you do with the money?

Public libraries.
Public transit.
Food banks.
Animal shelters.
Also libraries.
- pay all volunteer firefighters
- increase teacher wages
- create 2-3 public parks that are well maintained
- invest in schools and students
- create/strengthen “helping hands” initiatives for underserved
Don’t know what that amount would do:
Feeding and housing homeless and veterans
Support rural and urban schools
Support women’s clinics
Nutrition and healthcare for schools, childcare
Support local small businesses
Support local parks and green spaces
Buying back apartment buildings in Newark and turning them into affordable housing with 5 year leases that cannot increase.
Funding BIPOC owned businesses.
Purchasing supplies for local public schools.
Maternity care for at risk mothers.
Free after school programs.
Need something? A new cost here it is!
I live in a poor little town in nowhere Montana. I’d fix roofs there’s so many around here just crumbling.
Libraries and learn to read programs for children and adults.
And also for all the animals abandoned by heartless humans.
Also, fruit trees.
Ethical: I’d probably either pay off some people’s medical or school debts.
Unethical: use to gain blackmail-able information to influence policy makers.
Help aged out foster care kids and the homeless
Send anything left to underfunded libraries
- environment: buy land and plant trees (my area lacks green spaces) and make it a place for people to enjoy
- A community building for sure complete with an after school program and tutoring for kids.
- A library that anyone in the community could use.
- A shuttle since we are so far away from everything.
- Update the local park and refresh the trails. Maybe extend it a bit.
- Creating a space for folks to get help to get back on track (finding housing, finding a job, finding purpose in life)
- Creating third-places for teens/young adults (teenagers in my area have to hang out in underground garages as there are no places for them)
Free sports in the park.
Planting trees wherever possible.
-Breakfast and lunch programs for all children
-Medical aid for all that are in need
-Help with housing
-help our food banks to cover their operating/building expenses
-I know of three local animal rescues that always need, well, everything
-start up a free bike build/repair shop*
I feel like we need more of that.
To whit; put the $1M/yr in a fund to be dispersed to such entities, preferring pre-existing ones and ones coming from within the community, that fill basic needs, subsidizing them to lower prices for locals
It increases QoL, property values, and rewards success and ingenuity as seen thru a local lens
A million-worth complex of anti-drone defences for the city would be nice, too.
Energy efficient and well built
Houses must be owner occupied
Property will never be allowed to be rented
Limited equity cash out to discourage quick turnover
Bike and walk friendly road mods.
Park improvements
Soc workers to Help people thru the complicated sign up for Medicaid
MH services
Mobile medical & preventive
Screenings
Promote urban gardens / growing fresh fruits/veg
Fund scholarships and school upgrades.
Create parks and trails.
Sponsor health clinics and workshops.
Support small businesses.
Fund food banks and distribution.
Promote arts and culture.
Launch green initiatives.
Support youth programs.
Improve infrastructure.
