Certainly, that is 1 aspect of the problem (I do admire the alliteration 🙂). You see one may be able to read & write but still have limited capacity for logical or critical thought. We should try to avoid conflating the ability to think & grasp ideas in a complex fashion with mere literacy.
Went to my local library (just moved here) and there were a couple of fiction books in the nonfiction section. They weren't misplaced, either (the numbering was correct).
Some people don’t follow instructions and put books back on the shelf themselves. Might not be the librarians doing. I suggest pulling those books off the shelf and see where they’re returned.
Authoritarian governments want their regular citizens mainly as stupid work horses.
I look for no more Dept of Education.
Most uneducated people are easier to deceive and Power thrives when and where people are under-educated.
It's not incurable. If we had an opposition force to conservative actions to dumb the populace down we'd have a chance. Unfortunately, liberals serve the capital class just as much.
It’s not incurable. It was done to this country on purpose. There is a targeted attack on our educational system that’s been ongoing for decades as a response to desegregation. We need to fight for what’s left of the institution if we want any chance of fixing this country.
Great bio! We possess similar perspectives. I'm a sociologist w/ expertise in gender & power relations. I've spent my career trying to educate college students about hidden ways that the gender system makes gender norms appear "natural" rather than socially produced. Kudos to u for undrstding that!
It’s curable, just like every other mammal…don’t save the stupid. We have squirrels on our street that make solid, straightforward decisions, and cross the road completely with zero confusion…guess why 🤷♀️😬
Yes they are but they don’t come from the states Trump won. Using SAT’s as the metric, he took 18 of the top 20 states in America. I don’t even have to tell you who the most ignorant voted for.
I pressed several of these marginal voters and none of them bothered to learn a thing about Harris’s policies. They didn’t see her talking on Fox news so they just decided to just go with trump.
I don't think functional illiteracy is the problem for most of the people following a NYT columnist on a text-based medium and willfully missing his point.
No, that's usually how it manifests. Like the image that has a swastika and a sickle and hammer and says "if you think these aren't the same, you probably know your history." About 50% of people will read it as "don't know" and not be able to understand why you're clarifying, no matter what you say.
Once someone does pattern recognition and thinks "most images I have seen like this say X" it's very challenging to convince them to read it, because they can't do it without great effort. They know what it's supposed to say, why bother?
Not only do I give them agency, I'm going to watch the results redound to them in the worst way possible. And it's going to be hard to feel any sympathy for them.
I don’t care about the ‘marginal Trump voter.’ I want to know how to stop every single thing that monster wants to do. He said he will declare martial law on his first day in office, so how do we stop that?
Okay. That’s going to be dependent on what you do for a living, what skills and influence and power you have. It may be that you can only directly influence things in a very small way, or under very specific circumstances; that can still make a huge difference, though.
Sorry to jump in here but I am a currently unemployed data quality person living in Canada, if you have any suggestions for me as well? I vote in Washington State so call reps not not sure what else I can do directly. And I really don't know where to start looking.
I am working on getting my trans sibling there (it's expensive, they have a disability that interferes with working, and I will be responsible for their support for 3yrs) but other than that, what specifically do you suggest?
Respectfully, the marginal trump voter has made their fantasy land my problem. Whether or not I understand their lack of desire for chaos does not lessen my disdain for their general ignorance.
It certainly hasn’t stopped the MAGAts. These marginal Trump voters you speak of obviously did not read or pay any attention to the red flag warnings coming from every corner, including many Republicans. They voted without having any idea what they were voting for. That’s a problem.
This is the first election where some votes went through STARLINK. Elon Musk helped Trump CHEAT! This topic is getting bigger, but I wish more prominent people would speak about it. Go to the reddit page "r/somethingiswrong2024" for more crazy info💯
A lot of people form opinions based on their casual observations. They’re not political junkies. They’re just commenting on things as they see them and moving on to worry about life.
Which is a really lazy and sloppy habit. "I'm just shooting my mouth off about a thing I know nothing about and haven't actually even correctly identified as the subject of this conversation" is the essence of one of the many things wrong here.
I don't disagree at all! The biggest shortcoming of a democracy is that, for it to work well, it really needs an educated populace. And we're surely lacking. :(
No one can hide behind “I didn’t know he might do that” when defending his vote as they pretend the atrocities of his first 3 years were not real and the last year was just COVID.
Don’t work like that. You’re on the hook, now. #FAFO
There’s also money to be made in empowering and educating people. A lot more money, to be honest, but it takes more work, and some of the folks you empower might have the temerity to be better than you at some things.
Proud to have this man posting onhere.
Also grateful that he puts up with shenanigans that come with any social media site.
This one is a strong community, full of respect for Black scholars.
The NEA doesn’t give him any authority to use troops for deportation. But it could be how he plans to pay for the “don’t call them what they are” camps and deportation flights. He did this in his first term to unlock wall funding that congress refused to provide.
Sorry, I can't read. Can you shout more loudly on your screen? 🙏
jk. Tribalism also plays a big role as to why someone would R even though on paper they should not. And I see very little evidence that this tribal mentality in the US will change anytime soon

(sorry for the patriarchal language from the historical source but the point otherwise aged well).
He described those that "gave Trump the election" as having a "magical belief" in Trump's powers. That was his BASE.
The 'marginal voters' were the ones who had little or no faith in Harris' abilities, so they voted for Trump.
But fair.
Don’t work like that. You’re on the hook, now. #FAFO
Sigh...
Sigh…
how could they not?
Seriously, thank you. As painful as it is, you are quite right about what you are saying here.
