The media could have done so much more! They robustly covered a Trump fart and barely made mention of Biden's accomplishments which were many. They focused on his age yet Trump is old too and not one word. Kamala Harris could have benefitted from more favorable coverage but it was Trump only.
He (we) got lucky in 2020 when he won. He should have realized that fact and announce early he wasn’t running, especially when he didn’t have the energy or the capacity to run a real campaign, again, lucky COVID allowed us to not have one then
His hubris and the next 4 horrible years are his legacy…
I’m sick of reading people blaming Biden. This is the fault of republicans who are corrupt af, democrats who have lost at the states level, foreign actors, lazy electorate, media complicity.
Joe Biden is one person. One. Not everything is on his shoulders.
This is all OUR fault.
Let’s get busy.
We get it, Trump re-election is scary. I wonder if he'll go away as long as we keep asking, "Who do we blame?" Bottom of the barrel article. Or maybe the writer has Alzheimer's and can only remember the last six months. We should write a series of articles pondering that.
Yup, sounds about right coming from men.
Failure of democracy is those darn dems!GTFO - republicans and maga are to blame. Could you get republicans to listen to your reporting? NO
I blame YO Stop making dems responsible for saving America when you cheered it on via Radio'Free'Tom and your adticles
Voters had 4 years of Trump, then 4 years of Biden, and not surprisingly, they preferred the 4 years of Trump. I'm not a Trump fan, but Biden's policies have been a disaster.
Had Biden kept his 1-term bridge president pledge with an open primary, the election might well have turned out differently.
Biden put Harris in an impossible position by dropping out so late. She couldn't afford to attack him because that would have split the party. He should have stuck to his pledge to be a 1-term bridge president so Democrats could have an open primary. Instead, he handed the presidency back to Trump.
Biden promised to turn the page on Trump. Now he's being replaced by him
"Joe Biden staked his presidency on the idea that he was the best person to keep Donald Trump out of power"
At Home, Joe Biden Squandered Countless Opportunities
"After nearly half a century as a key figurehead in the Democratic Party’s rightward turn on domestic politics, Joe Biden had a chance to undo some of that damage as president. Time after time, he blew it."
Biden’s Reign of Error Goes on and on | The Hill
"If Joe Biden intends to humiliate every last one of his supporters before he leaves office, he is well on his way to achieving that goal."
Democratic leadership needs to accept some of the blame. How many times over the spring and summer did I hear Democrat Senators and Representatives go on news shows to convince us age wasn’t an issue
That kinda sums it up . . .
(don’t really need the details from the article)
. . . and, now, here we are . . .
(I feel like the democratic party has failed humanity)
Wrong! The media failed miserably! Get it right! The Atlantic et al are responsible for what we face losing democracy. Get used to eating crow publishing crap!
Who the fuck is Franklin Foer and why does he fucking suck so bad? I forgot Joe Biden sat on the Supreme Court and gave Trump immunity for all his crimes.
Jack Smith laid out why there were delays. The classified case was taken off the rails by a Trump appointed judge.
American voters are responsible for our democracy slipping. Not Joe Biden. Not Merrick Garland. Time to blame the real culprits, dumb as fuck Americans.
No shortage of dumbasses with the power to vote, sadly. But this country was rat fucked from inception...anyone with a brain knows that. We are only now beginning to see the consequences.
With any luck the whole thing will be ashes by 2028.
Great man , did many things , the opposite party was out to destroy Dem
Decent Man but Dem failed to protect the political & laws& morals
They need to overhaul it all and if they want to survive a different process Like the winners on the right!
The reality is that although it would be nice if politics still had a modicum of decency and respectability, but that was gone long ago and because the left has continually refused to say the quiet part out loud and with fervor, this is what we are left with.
He spent 4 years working on decent policy and made improvements but it’s all for nought when he hands it over on Monday and democracy crumbles. He has even said he should have focused more on loudly opposing this and he didn’t.
The man was a politician for 50 YEARS, longer than any other American politician ever. What’s happening now is the eruption of of evangelical magma that has been broiling for 40 years. He has had time, generations of it, to help stop it and 4 years in the most powerful seat to take real action.
Biden tried to respect the rule of law. That was his "failure". How far we have fallen if respecting the rule of law is now considered a failure. How about mourning the end of ethics when Biden leaves?
Wow, it's almost as if there weren't any other players involved - like the incestuous marriage of deep-pocketed oligarchs, Christian Nationalists, and right-wing propaganda networks who are actively undermining our democratic institutions.
I realize it's difficult to admit the media's role in this, so of course you have to blame Biden. If y'all hadn't torn-down Kamala the minute she was sworn-in as VP, Biden probably would have been comfortable handing the reins to her after the midterms.
I mean, we should probably see how the next 4 years go before declaring that. If the institutions hold the I think you can say he fortified the government. Regardless, I think the real failed promise was serving as a bridge to the next generation, he let his ego get in the way of doing that sooner.
If Trump would have won in 2020 we could be coming to the end of this nightmare, and with his most likely mismanagement of Covid recovery and inflationary issues the name “Trump” would be synonymous with failure and MAGA would be dead once and for all

One person alone cannot destroy nor save democracy. Trump wd be not be Prez again were it not for the Reps who lied for him since 2017 and lied about Biden and the Dems. This failure is owned by GOP, SCOTUS, the self-serving elites & uninformed voters.
I disagree. You blame Biden for voters' ignorance and selfishness. They could have voted for Harris but they chose the psychopathic fascist. That's not Biden's fault. This kind of thinking is what will prevent the Democrats from winning again. It's the voters!
I've seen multiple takes on Biden failing to preserve democracy - but 70 million+ people are more directly to blame. I'd rather hear about how we ended up with so many conspiracy-theory-prone, anti-democratic zealots, and what we can do about that. Joe's leaving, but they'll all still be here.
I usually enjoy Foer, but this inside-the-Beltway take ignores the wave of feeling that’s washed over the country for nearly a generation. The voters are responsible, just as they were 20 years ago. This is their America. Now they’ll find out what they got. He wrote the wrong column.

GAF grip, @theatlantic.com This is no time to be putting check marks in the ‘sieg heil’ column. Please, be vigilant about these things. The media is on a fuel-soaked thread right now. Choose hard stories that support democracy, not chip away at it.
The issue is, despite the success of Biden as noted in the introduction to this piece, a significant portion of the public believed the country went to hell in the last four years.
Why did they believe this?
Media. The how and why can be debated forever. But the media created and elected Trump.
Without reading the article (paywall), IMHO Biden’s failure to remove Garland, and Garland’s failure to prosecute well connected R insurrectionists, represented a catastrophic failure of both to do their fundamental duties. The US as a democracy may not survive Biden and Garland’s non feasance
🧵 As too many writers do when trying to decipher ‘what went wrong’ in 2024, Foer focused on the political instead of civic factors that led to Trump. There is a consistency by these writers in continually ignoring the responsibility of the voters. 1/2
Our country is based on self governing. In this regard more than half the electorate failed. They had a responsibility to know better & make an informed decision to both protect democracy & their self interests. They did neither. 2/2
The mainstream media has done more damage than Biden. They have refused to give him credit for the US’s amazing post-covid economic recovery. Those Chicken Littles were too busy blaming (world-wide) inflation on Biden to make it clear that the US economy under Biden has been “the envy of the world”
It’s beyond ridiculous to say Biden has wrecked his legacy. Journalists believed Carter had a terrible legacy. Only very recently has Carter gotten credit for his important accomplishments as president.
After seeing that ridiculous headline I am seriously thinking about cancelling my subscription.
Absolutely but we can hold people accountable for not living up to campaign promises. The only reason I voted for him was for his promise to turn the page on the Trump era. He could stepped down earlier, he could picked a more proactive AG. If he couldn’t do it he shouldn’t have promised.
The reason republicans win is bc they don’t say this type of shit. Literally just say the system sucks. Bc people wouldn’t think those slop thoughts unless it was driven into their uneducated brain, by a compromised media environment. There are better targets than regular people for your ire.
Betting it’s because we learned critical thinking in school before George W gutted the educational system, leaving subsequent generations wide open to the influence of whatever rot they’re fed on social media.
Democracy cannot be left up to one person, or one position, even if that person is the POTUS.
Our constitution demands that we all play a role. It demands that the judiciary and the media do their part. Both the judiciary and the media failed to do their jobs.

And the classified docs case is small potatoes compared to J6, which Biden/Garland didn't move on for two years.
