I disagree. This would lead to art being controlled by the wealthy, to an even greater extent than it is already.

What is required is a universal basic income so that people can live a reasonable life doing what they love even if it doesn't earn them any money.

Art is already being controlled by the whims of capitalist elites which is why it's in such a sorry state today. We just don't call it patronage anymore because whole companies are paying a select few artists rather than individuals. UBI would be way better for artists.

Patron is a little different because it's a bunch of people paying small ounts of money to access bonus content. The original idea of a patron was a rich person liked an artist so they gave them a bunch of money either to go to school, buy supplies, or just cover living expenses

I've definitely come across the use of Patreon to support an artist generally rather than transactionally.
It's many normal people giving $ regularly instead of one rich person giving $$$ once, but yeah in this usage they're explicitly supporting the lifestyle. No bonus content, just content.

I’m thinking more ambitiously. How about restructuring our value systems so that the work that goes into art is recognized and artists across the board - not only the ones with “the right friends” and/or “business skills” can make a living. Not saying I have a solution, but education is part of it.

That the Medicis didn’t support art for art’s sake. It was ultimately self-aggrandising and self-serving. And good on them, but that model doesn’t really exist anymore for pretty clear reasons.

And those artists painted exactly what their moneyed masters wanted painted or sculpted or written… they they did it with the tremendous skill that they did is a testament to their greatness - but they were paid commissions to do what the patrons wanted done.

Mostly… the whole idea of patronage was for the patrons to have visible demonstrations of their wealth and power… they routinely had their artists (who they mostly classed as little more than manual laborers) paint them into the artworks or use them as models for the sculptures…
