Chili is in the stove so now’s a most excellent time for the weekend Q&A. Ask me any serious question you have about the Super Bowl and the NFL and I’ll answer it as best I can.

Comments

If the Bears come away from the draft with Williams, and either Odunze or Bowers, do they have enough firepower to just beat the fucking Packers?
Yes.
Is Brock Purdy actually good-good or is it smoke and mirrors with the system and other players
However long it takes, whatever happens btwn now and then, where do you see the "partnership" btwn the NFL and all the gambling apps ending up?
Pretty much the way it is now except some of those books will consolidate
Making your chili for the 3rd year in a row on SB Sunday. (I also use the recipe for the most part for other chili making occasions). Great recipe
Trent Williams a first ballot HOFer right now, or does he need the ring?
No he’s first ballot right now
What's your favorite super bowl?
Giants/Bills because it was the first truly great one I’d ever watched in full.
You ever listen to the band Twin Peaks?
Never heard of them!
Chicago based indie rock. Heavy Stones influence. Sadly, currently on a long hiatus. Recommend!
What have to be the circumstances for another Prince-grade halftime show?
Just the right artist with the right amount of nerve. It could happen again.
Bizarrely, Harry Styles
Not a big fan, but you're probably on to something.
He's the right kind of weird to make it work.
Yeah!
Um, Yeah is tomorrow.
Harry Styles famously covered it.
Hey nowwwww
I didn't know until this week that Prince performed a mini-set at the press event announcing his Super Bowl participation. It's on YouTube, highly recommended. The man was a god every time he stepped on stage.
They'd have to be allowed to actually play live.
What happens first: expansion or another relocation?
Probably the former, shockingly. Unless the Jags’ new stadium proposal gets the stiffarm
Who gets teams?
One of the cities that’s already hosted an international game
Would expansion outside of US-Mexico-Canada not even work unless the NFL puts 4+ teams in the area?
I’m sure they’ve had a lot of long and angry conversations about that. Basically it’ll be like TNF: players will hate it but the NFL will make them do it anyway
Which Super Bowl participant has a better chance of returning to a Super Bowl next season?
Chiefs
Do you think there is any chance that any level of football (high school even if only one state, college, or pros) outlaws hitting the QB within the next, say, 20 years? Like the red practice jersey, but in real games? Would have to make him hittable if he leaves the pocket, of course.
At what point does Mahomes become a credible candidate for GOAT?
Right now
100% I saw the question about Brady*’s total SB wins and was thinking Mahomes is already considered a better QB.
Growing up SB was the one time a year the parents buckled and permitted fast food into the home... for me the long-gone Bigfoot pizza is forever ingrained as a "Super Bowl food". Any "only ever had it during the Super Bowl" nostalgia foods for you? (Not sure if the chili is SB-only.)
Holy shit I haven’t thought about the Bigfoot Pizza in decades. I’m sure it was awful but man was it huge
When will the first Super Bowl outside of the USA be held?
Decades from now and no sooner
When do you think the first “Black Sox” type scandal will hit the NFL?
The Black Sox had a (semi-)legitimate reason for doing what they did that largely gets glossed over in contemporary reference that was for for the most part 'solved' by free agency

The best you *might* get is a The Replacements style player deep into to debt tanking a game.
Never
Okay Q&A is over! Chili is ready to go!

Pre-Super Bowl Chili brewers, unite.

Dried chile purée (w/chipotles, pasillas, New Mexico chiles) and the secret ingredient (there’s also six pounds of ground beef in the fridge, got the last family pack at Wegmans)

And this morning’s chili soundtrack

Plus one joint ash
Good night for it.

What kinda chili we making today?
Beef
If you had told me two months ago thatBill Belichick wouldn’t get a HC job I would have laughed at you. It seems that teams (mostly) wanted new blood and not a retread this hiring cycle. Do you think that is something we’ll see more often moving forward?
Only if the young guns win
Or do you just think that the teams with HC openings are just too cheap/too dumb to want Belichick?
Does BB coach in any capacity this year? I think all DC spots are filled. Crazy to me that he won’t be in football at all this year.
No he’ll probably do TV
Or the raiders will hire him.
The Joe Girardi route
I’d like to think of this as the “learning from keeping Jeff Fisher around” experience, but maybe that’s too charitable.
He’s a career losing coach when Brady isn’t starting.

He’s a repeat and unrepentant cheater.

He can’t draft but demands all the power.

He hasn’t kept up with the modern game.

He’s gonna go down on coaching Mt. Rushmore, but outside of asterisk’d rings and a bad attitude he ain’t shit.
Now that Gradishar is in for the Orange Crush, will any other members of that team make it and if so, who? If not, why not?
That’s before my time so I have no clue
What’s the next franchise to win its first SB?
That’s an excellent question and I’ll say the Texans
Lions.
That's the only answer
Bengals baby.
will the Bengals ever win it all
Sure
Assuming infinite Super Bowls, everyone but the Vikings will surely win.
that's putting an awful lot of faith in cleveland
I'm just giving Drew a friendly ribbing.
Would you eat a jar of mayo with a spoon if it meant the Vikings would make the Super Bowl next year?
Yes
They'd still lose.
PAAAACK!
You’ve grown wiser with age
I’m a 49ers fan and would also do this fwiw
I was thinking. Do you think Atlanta did interviews with Belichick just so they could turn him down as some petty payback for 28-3? Or am I giving them too much credit?
Too much credit
Who is the best Purple People Eater...Alan Page or Grimace?
Do you believe rookie QB’s are going to be expected to be good their rookie seasons because of Stroud, Burrow and Herbert?
You can go back much further than that to say yes
Will BB ever coach in the NFL again?
I’ll say yes only because of Dallas
What is your favorite play or moment from any Super Bowl?
Mark Ingram Sr muscling his way to a do or die third down conversion in XX, and the Elway helicopter run seven years later
Do people really hate the Chiefs and am I supposed to hate them now too? I grew up at a time where seeing AFC West teams playing in the late window always made me think, “How cute. They think these rivalries are meaningful.” I can’t have strong feelings about any of them.
I don’t think anyone hates them they’re just tired of them, as I am. But that’s different than actively despising them
There’s more to it than that—I think Mahomes entitled attitude with the refs and constant flopping to draw roughing calls has soured some people (me) on them. And their fans once cheered for Ted Cruz, so that’s also reason enough to root against them.
Now that I think about it, it might have been DeSantis they cheered for, but the point stands…
Ted Cruz plus tomahawk chop equals gross
Do they trot out Joe Montana for this one?

He QBed both teams.
Yeah. There’s that. I just haven’t found that anyone they’re playing makes for a more likable alternative. Certainly not the Niners. Probably not the Ravens.
Lots of people have turned on them for the unrelenting racism of their fans’ chants and costuming. So they got that going for them.
There’s that. It’s gross.
I am also making your chili now.

What strain of joint ash did you add this year?
Ha! None. I’m all gummies now
Best alternative to watching the Super Bowl?
People watching the people watching the Super Bowl
Heroin (no fent).
Watching the Super Bowl
AFCON final, Nigeria vs. Ivory Coast.
I went to see "The Corporation" instead one year.
Why has that line not moved despite the entirety of the take o verse picking KC?
Likely because actual bettors are not in similar lockstep
Niners surprise win?
They’re favored!
Wait, why? Did nobody see them almost lose to the Packers and Lions?
But what if they win in a surprising way?
Like on a buttfumble? Sure
College FB questions allowed? How long before SEC and Big 10 try to dump schools like Vandy and Northwestern?
They’re already plotting to ditch the NCAA together so contraction isn’t their priority right now
Personally I think those schools are useful to them. Lots of money flows through more elite universities and they provide a sheen of academic rigor.
Concur
Plus helps shield the conferences from FOIA/state sunshine laws
Are you rooting for overtime?
Sure! I don’t have a dog in the fight so I just want a great game
I feel too old to use this emoji, however: 👀
Do you plan to buy a Russell Wilson Vikings jersey next season or will it be more of a shirsey situation
Why does Charging Chuck, the football player in Super Mario World for the SNES, throw baseballs at Mario and not footballs?
Is it unreasonable to expect Taylor to perform a song at halftime? Short of an appearance by Weird Al or G.W.A.R., anything less would be lame. I get business and whatnot but ffs why fly from Japan if you're just there to get blurbs for watching the meathead bf?
There’s zero chance she performs in any capacity on Sunday. None.
She is getting whaled! She won't be singing anything for days.
Borrrr-ring

What's something irrational you notice about either team that sways your opinion about their chance to win?
The Niners counting on a dogshit kicker
Hahahaha dude you called it
Nice miss, dork!
That does really stick out as irrational. Thank you for answering.
Yes it's unreasonable. She doesn't owe you shit. Neither does any celebrity.
Drew asked for questions so I asked him a question. And you answered because you are Drew's representative or are you just insinuating your rage into a conversation that did not ask you a question?
"In" the stove? Are you putting it in the oven instead of on a burner on low?
Typo. It’s on the stove
Coolio. (Wondered if you were changing up your chili game and getting into stew / carbonnade territory)
Did it with a whole chuck roast today.
Ooo. Didja cube & braise it first?
Nope I just seared the whole fucker and I’ll let it go fork tender from there
That’s how it’s done
if Williams and Maye go 1/2, who should the Pats draft at 3?
Daniels
yeah that’s where I’m at, even if Marvin Jr turns out to be Calvin Johnson 2.0 they won’t win without a real quarterback
If Mahomes gets 4 or 5 rings with Reid, would we ever have a repeat of the Belichik-Brady debate with Mahomes and Reid?
We already are
Hate the Chiefs but they’ve been actively screwed out of SB appearances (their last AFCC vs Pats for example) whereas how many Pats rings don’t have a fukkin asterisk so, KC has done more honestly at least
Do you think you'll see the Vikings win a Super Bowl in your lifetime?
Of course I do
Do you think Brock Purdy is a good quarterback?
Yes
He’s what, 3rd choice for MVP? Yeah that’s ok.
What is your favorite prop bet for tomorrow?
What was the best NFL game you watched this season?
Cowboys/Lions
Watched The Holdovers during most of the game then tuned in for the final Lions drive/eligibility controversy. 9/10 would recommend.
Wow, I legit did the exact same
If Mahomes beats Brady’s Super Bowl wins record will people change their GOAT tune? Is that a realistic feat for him?
Yes and yes
Shit, even if he just gets close (like 5 or 6) I think the opinion shifts towards him because of his catalog of ungodly plays.
Most def
If I’m not a football knower how will I know if the game is lame enough to skip?
Because it’ll be boring?
Vibes will be off.
Brady got to Superbowls with cold, brutal efficiency. Mahomes has now gone to multiple Superbowls by out-Josh-Allening Josh Allen. He's pulled off enough miracles to qualify for sainthood several times over. I don't know which is better; I absolutely know which one is more fun to watch and root for.
Unless Patrick builds a Time Machine he’ll be 0-2 forever vs Brady when it mattered. He needs to win 8 SBs to change that narrative. Mahomes is unbelievable but what Brady did is Wilt levels of not being repeatable playing to 45 at a high level.
Nah. 0-2 vs Brady isn’t like Manning losing every matchup against him. Sample size isn’t big enough to mean anything.
When Mahomes is done he’ll have dozens of amazing plays - scrambles + passes - that Brady doesn’t have. Yeah, he won a bunch, but he never commanded the QB position like Mahomes has the past 6 years.
Peyton lost all the big ones to Brady. Eli was 2-0 against Brady when it counted.
And Belichick will be considered garbage, despite a million think-pieces about Andy Reid's Philly and Alex Smith years.
It's a Sampras / Federer situation. Like Brady Pete was considered obvious goat, then whoosh
I think people will change their tune if he gets to 5 or so

it won’t be an argument if he gets 7
