Cars in America are safe-ish largely due to companies considering it bad policy to violently kill a bunch of your customers, not because of mandate.

Not sure where you heard that, but there’s nothing voluntary about Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The FMVSS determines what vehicles can and can’t be legally driven on public roads in the US and has since it was made law in 1966.

Yes, there are certain mechanical requirements that are updated from time to time, but that's just a few MINIMUM safety standards, stuff like airbags, ABS, and backup cameras. This still lags behind the times.

If not for the FMVSS, cars would still be cheaply made body-on-frame monstrosities wrapped in rigid stamped sheet metal with steering columns that’ll punch through your chest if you hit something going faster than 35 mph. Look up the book Unsafe at Any Speed if you don’t believe me.

Yeah, and oftentimes the stuff that gets mandated for all cars was just luxury features on luxury brands.

For example, ABS was around long before it was mandated. So were backup cameras. The feds aren't imposing these rules so much as pointing at one manufacturer & saying "everyone should do that"
