It's like the airlines got the message that they were no longer going to be policed and decided to dial the safety procedures way back to save money. I soon expect to have to pay a surcharge to fly on a plane in which they will go through the proper safety checks

Small plane/GA crashes are quite common. You're just noticing because you're looking for them -- confirmation bias. I'm not saying the changes to the FAA aren't worth worrying about, but its the airliner crashes that are a big deal. Every GA pilot knows someone who crashed, it happens that often.
