Ska nerd popping in to say that 90's ska was actually the third wave and that it originated in Jamaica and preceded reggae. Bob Marley and the Wailers were originally a ska band.
It's like uptempo reggae, but these days it's mostly white people doing it and it's mostly cringe as hell. Rock music with a horn section and emphasis on the off beat.
https://KFJC.org, streaming free online and two weeks of archives, check out Zero Gravity's show between 11pm and midnight Saturday, best of original Jamaican ska from the 1960s & 1970s. Amazing stuff, learn about the good stuff first.
Lol I'm sorry for being an ogling elderly person, it's fascinating is all. I grew up with ska and I enjoy it, but I fully get how it's not everybody's jam
be not afraid, said the archangel Skankriel, and then they busted out into the sickest skank the lord had ever seen, and the lord said "okay i'll allow it"
If you’ve heard reggae you’ve basically heard ska because it came from ska via rocksteady, though I’ll take first or second wave ska over reggae any day
I live in Eugene, OR and in the late 90s-early 00s ska was HUGE here, I mean it was huge everywhere but we had the Cherry Poppin' Daddies of Zoot Suit Riot fame. Everyone was in a ska band. You couldn't walk down the street in your checkered vans without tripping over a stray trombone. It was rough.
Actually, 3. The "OG" 60s Jamaican ska (Ethiopians, Desmond Dekker, Wailers), the 2tone era of the late 70s (Specials, Selecter, English Beat), & the 80s/90s wave ska that added more punk seasonings (Voodoo Glow Skulls, Desorden Público, Reel Big Fish).
Personally, I like 1 & 2 w/some bands from 3.🕴️
I probably would like ska still but when I was in a ska band in highschool, all the adult guys in the other bands we played with always tried to hook up with the highschool girls that would come to the shows. So I decided that's not who I want to be when I grow up.
