Like I think in a normal day it deserves to be higher, but when you're angling to end two different democracies in a single day, the important box is going to get crowded
What’ve their push notifications been like throughout this? Imo front page as a concept hasn’t translated well in the social media age but I think the closest thing would be push notifications not article placement on the site
It is, after all, not only directly true, and grabs people's attention to what it is, but also the correct (and only) unifying frame of reference for everything that is happening right now
Could you imagine a server with such important things as emails out there!?!
Oh I could hate read another 5,000 words about those emails just this morning.
It does seem like A1 headline stuff but we can't expect an exceptionally rich heir to the Staples fortune with a mansion on Long Island and a day job as executive editor to jeopardize his soon-to-be renewed tax cuts.
He called himself a king so people won’t ask him or anyone associated why he sponsored a bill to slash Medicaid. This will be the top headline but it’s to cover up that he’s robbing his elderly base.
He's introducing a crazy idea that will be amplified & repeated. There will be thinkpieces asking "What would it be like if Trump WERE king?" Then some GOP backbencher hoping for Trump's attention will introduce a bill to call him king, the RW media empire will circulate & it will become normalized.
And even if he is "joking": there are certain things a POTUS has no business joking about. And if Trump either doesn't get that or refuses to accept that, then he is fundamentally unfit for the office.
He's not joking, he's establishing a narrative. And it's a coordinated effort, he's not doing it alone. This narrative needs to be met not with surprise, dismay, or whatever, but with resistance.
Simultaneously not and central to the point: "just joking" has carried a lot of water for fascism the last decade or two.
It's not entirely true to say "irony is the language of fascism", but it's getting goddamn close. And when actions and intent mirror the joke, you take them seriously.
Jokes as a device are meant to explore humor, not to create a shield of plausible deniability and space free of judgment to explore personal fascist and nazi trial balloons.
Arriving at the later gives away which the speaker intends, as well as a platform from which to speak it. (edited)
Could make for so many great headlines!
"No Taxation For Coronation?"
"Declaration Of Dependence Signed!"
"Red, White, and Royal Blue?"
"The Tea Has Been Returned"
I'm probably being foolish, but my instincts re: Trump have seldom been wrong and I bounce off the king stuff because I have a very, very strong sense that he won't get away with it. I'm not saying don't fight it, but deposing a king feels easier, conceptually, than deposing a president.
History teaches us that there are things Americans will tolerate and things we will not tolerate. Kings, unlike slavery and genocide, are very firmly in Column B.
NYT headline: “President promotes muscular leadership”
Subhead: Analogizing his bold actions to those of a king, the President defied his opponents, leaving them dazed and directionless while he steers the course of the nation.”
scanning the hard copy today (which I get from my library I wouldn’t support NYT), it looks like the NYT felt that Trump declaring himself a king was not worthy of an independent story - just included it in a paragraph in its story on congestion pricing
