You and @aptshadow.bsky.social put a fine point on something about Etched City that always made me think had limited its audience: the 'this is the third book in a non-existent trilogy' issue.

It has no traditional structure. No hero, no villain, no rigid plot spine.

I discovered it late last night, browsing Kindle. Now I'm trying to decide if I listen to the podcast or come at the book fresh, as it were. (Given the people here saying good things about it, I've got high expectations now.)

Funnily enough, one of the things we discuss in this episode is that this book can probably be spoilered without ruining enjoyment more than most books can. I personally hate spoilers though, and we discuss it thoroughly, so YMMV.

It's a matter of personal choice, I guess - me, I would rather the plot twists (if any) came as a surprise. Though I do think, also, that there are books which are good for a re-read when you know what's coming.

Nope. That is the Tor UK Commonwealth edition of The Etched City. Bantam US edition is still in print. The rest of the world gets it cheap on Kindle to make up for that.

Hilariously, we saw a different book using the same clip art for the cover in a bookstore window a few months after it came out.

I also have an annoying brain so I really appreciated that segue 😂 recently read a secondary world fantasy where someone was reading braille. Was it cool to see? Yes. Would it have been a lot of work to make up an alternate system? Probably. But threw me right out of the world!
