Fewer than 80 schools out of a total of more than 500 have librarians. >15% of schools in the district have librarians. Only 12 out of ≈150 high schools have a librarian. Only ≈10% of majority Black schools have a librarian.
I'm old school, and I'm wondering how this Country's wealth is through the roof, however, our school system is poor like a MF? How were we able to produce so many geniuses through public high schools back then?
I keep thinking I attended public school during the end of the golden age. What I had:
*full time nurse
*2 full time librarians
*after school activity buses so kids could join clubs, theater, music, & sports
*enough textbooks for each student
*computer lab
*free tutoring before/after school
My school library is now run by a liberryan. Not a trained and certified librarian. But the school and staff still label them as liberryans. And even as a liberryan, they are grossly under paid.
In your country it should be mandatory to be in all your schools.
In my primary schooling our teacher was the librarian since it was a two room school. In high school there was a dedicated Library with a Librarian to help you when required. All other high schools were the same.
Gonna say this, too: AND in every youth detention centre/kiddie jail. Books are a lifeline, an escape, and a way to peacefully be engaged for a lot of these kids.
Same in Canada! Our elements schools do not have librarians! I remember having library time and learning how to use books to do research… something we need more than ever.
One way to keep maga christian crime syndicate in power is eliminating education, keep the citizens ignorant and stupid so will worship a god and send money to the church.
Librarians who are present in a school, especially if they are there full time vs. part time, can get to know the books they have, the students they serve, and the staff with whom they team.
I was the librarian at a very large school for several years. Apart from all the wonderful books, it was a peaceful and safe haven for anxious and often lonely children, who found great solace in reading.
This is my elementary school library in WI. Not every district is obeying in advance. This was 2 weeks ago, and many of these books are checked out now.
I'm passionate about reading, and about censorship. The Christian Bible has more graphic stories about murder, rape, genocide, and theft. Not what I want to teach my kids, but I want them to read OTHER books and opinions.
This stupid shit doesn't help, our kids want to read the banned books.
It was a school librarian when I was a child who fostered the love of reading in me. I was never read to as a child. Books were not a thing in my house. So very different for my child.
I remember our left handed librarian pitching a fit when a student told her the teacher tried to firce her to write with her right hand. She got the practice banned. Never underestimate a school librarian!
I grew up in a village with a population of 400. The “ library “ in our school was a bookshelf at the back of the classroom. For 8th grade I was bussed to the city to a much larger school. As an introvert I struggled but when I walked into the library I was in my happy place!🤫
That library must have felt like a whole new world opening up. Books have a way of offering refuge, especially for introverts. It’s amazing how a real library can make such a difference in a person’s life.
I thought it was wonderful. I probably had read most of the books in the little library at my first school but the only ones I remember were the Little house on the Prairie books. At the bigger school I constantly checked out books.📚🙂
Please use alt text so that people with disabilities can have an adaptive device read a description of your image. In this case please include all of the text on the poster. Thank you.
In fact, our investigations have shown that while AI is a good starting point, it often misrepresents or misconstrues. It is not a replacement. Human review of AI generated alt text is a must.
Ha! I just sat through an alt text workshop at work yesterday afternoon. I'm facilitating an AI for alt text pilot, and work closely with others in the know. So, I felt ok sharing. 🙂
once upon a time!! there was always the handful of students in each class who LOVED the school library times.. guessing they are the critical thinkers of today..
She was an older lady who spoke in a loud deadpan manner, so at first i thought she would be mean and stern, but she was actually pretty chill and nice.
A librarian who is the personification of not judging a book by the cover. 🙃
I used to think the same when I was a kid. But when I got to college I worked in the library & I learned the librarians are the chillest of chill. And super smart in general & I was flattered that they thought I was smart enough to file the card catalog, for those who remember what that was.
One summer the circulation department lent me out to the cataloging department. And I got to file in the shelf list, for librarians who know what that was.
A Library with a Librarian in every school and county EVERY day. When I heard about school districts sharing a librarian depending on the day of the weak, I about cried.
You notice how Trump misspelled words and he’s supposed to be a college grad. He failed in college that’s why you can’t get his transcripts. Anything under a C, you fail.
I can’t tell if you are joking or not (I wish someone would invent a “sarcasm” font), but if not, yes: many school libraries are not staffed with trained, credentialed librarians.
In fact, many schools don’t have libraries anymore. Budget cuts are the usual excuse.
I’m a little bit ignorant of the status quo. LAUSD had librarians. I’m old so it’s a long time since school libraries directly impacted my life. My stepkids were already out of school and later my grandkids were far away enough for me not to be involved. They’re grown up now too!
I am a huge reader. In 6th grade my village voted not to renew the millage giving residents access to the library in the next town. My school librarian knew this & ALWAYS purchased books for me. She would have me "help" her & ask me what I wanted. She was a lifesaver. School librarians are the best!
I don’t know if I would be the person I am today had it not been for my elementary school librarian. Librarians are too often over looked heroes within our school systems.
sure, however, butt fuck books do not belong in elementary school.
No men can't have babies and having such books in elementary schools is sick.
So until you sort yourselves out, leave the children alone.
and NEED it - We can't keep graduating kids that can't read and therefore can't think anything through and can't succeed in college or trade school - America has to be a country THAT CAN READ and apply critical analysis skills to any problem - like the problems of TRump and MUCK
Yes! I remember growing up going into the library where a nice librarian took the time to show me books in the genre that I was looking for, as well as talking to me about my interests, and dreams. I will never forget her.
When I was a kid it was a requirement for public schools. The state where I grew up (Ohio) cut that requirement about ten or fifteen years ago, along with the requirement that schools have PE.
I have not heard about that one yet. This one is specifically targeted to hurt the quarterly goals of the Share Holders, as this (depending on the company) is either the last holiday of the first quarter. Their share holders will be extremely hurt if we don't buy their treats
🤔 but the stores are stocked up with it now so people would’ve had to stop buying it last week. This was certainly benefit the local handmade chocolatiers that we have in our community.
what about the people that go out to dinner, or the movies, or any kinda of date night? its not just buying chocolates at walmart. A general strike is nation wide by all peoples to all businesses. Except for essential workers like doctors and such
Those who can handle the abuse in Texas, Alabama, etc. Some of those librarians fear for their lives. Some are cult members who became librarians to cull books from the shelves.
Hard to believe something as simple as a library and a librarian can be a hot button culture war tolic.
I'm biased, perhaps, because I was a librarian for about 35 years, but librarians generally are staunch defenders of freedom of expression and freedom of speech. Some earnest patrons here in Canada threw "offensive" books in the toilet. The librarian made it clear that they have reordered the books.
For many of us, the librarian was the best part of school. I had nothing but lousy teachers, but great librarians. Didn't need the teachers, I can read.
My school didn’t have a librarian, and called a wall of encyclopedias the library. It was a very weak education looking back. I survived because i had masters degree parents and books at home.
The school my kid goes to does not have a librarian anymore and the library is closed most of the time or just used as extra study hall space. This was easier than fighting through book bans.

I was (and still am) an avid reader. Being reared in a single parent poor household, I devoured books from the school library for escapism and a look at other lives and cultures.
Parents that are crying the loudest about how schools are failing are the very VOTERS that refused to invest tax dollars in their schools. Maybe it’s no coincidence that students are failing the more art, libraries and music are cut from budgets.
That’s both admirable and challenging she’s doing important work in a time when school libraries are under attack. It must be frustrating to see books that help kids think critically and empathize with others being targeted.
I was shocked to find out that no longer MLIS Media Library Specialists are running school libraries. Instead they are hiring paraprofessionals! As a librarian in a public library, I have teachers asking for reader’s advisory because they want to talk to real librarians!😵💫
Whenever the powers that be cut money from schools the first to go are: librarians, the music program, the art teachers, the counselors, the gifted/talented programs, after school programs (other than sports), the school nurses— says a tremendous amount about our screwed up country doesn’t it?
That’s disappointing but, unfortunately, not uncommon. A trained librarian can make such a huge difference in helping kids develop a love for reading and critical thinking skills. It’s frustrating to see schools undervalue that role.
I volunteer weekly at my granddaughter’s school library. What she quietly and patiently teaches in forty minutes is remarkable and valuable. I’ve learned things I never knew before too! Our libraries must be protected and remain a safe space for all.
Retired CPS teacher scratching my head and wondering why they disappeared.
I taught in an inner city school and I couldn’t send my kids to the local library because it was located in another gang’s territory. But I could send them down to Room 212 to safely do some research.
America is alredy strugling with a massive illitaracry rate among a first world country, but Elon doesn't seem to care, the dumber the people are the more he and trump can control them.
A librarian handed me a book when I was 6. The Sign Of The Four. The children's library back then also had lots of science fiction as it was thought to be something for kids. Her action had a huge influence on my careers.

I always wanted to help in a library (repetitive tasks calm me down) but wasn't allowed much in high school.
I mostly went there when class got too noisy and read, did some drawing, homework, or exchanged plant care tips with her.
In fact, many schools don’t have libraries anymore. Budget cuts are the usual excuse.
Sorry - just had a republican turn.
Our town was so small we had 1 restaurant, 2 variety stores and an IGA
Our grade 1 to 6 public school (no middle or high school, you got bussed to the next town) had a library with librarian

If knowledge, learning & quality education is really important to us, we need to bring back full-time school librarians.
Nicely done
