one of the basic things about profound cynicism is that it makes you incredibly vulnerable to being scammed. the reason that so much of the dirtbag left thinks that liberals are their enemies and that soft fascists are misguided potential allies is just gullibility.

I also think that this kind of cynicism is professionally adaptive for an investigative reporter -- your job is fighting Institutions and you develop a focused sense for what they're doing wrong

it's a pretty terrible basis for a politics but it makes sense for the job

broadly I think there's an issue of "everyone's a pundit now" -- the approach to the world that makes you a good journalist is not identical with what makes you a good commentator

someone like this needs a good editor to keep them focused on non-stupid stuff but it should be ok they have bad ideas

I'm a big believer in a political axis labeled "distrust - trust" or similar but don't think the red/brown stuff in the 1930s is a good example bc the communists were just implementing Moscow foreign policy.

There's a newspaper comics forum I happen to follow that contains a lot of left-wing people, and they were posting a left-wing comic from the 1930s chronologically and you could see in real time the contemporary readers go from "Hell yeah you talk about labor rights Little Leftie" to "Oh no"

not disagreeing with this exactly but I do think there's also a common issue of people without strong beliefs/values/ideology allowing their worldview to be shaped negatively by whoever they perceive to be their enemies. eg blue anon types who hate the GOP and get taken by resistance grifters

You're too kind. The issue isn't cynicism, it's grievance.

The populist left is defined by their hatred of, well, everyone who's not left-populist. But they hate liberals more than fascists because their stated goal is to take over the DNC, and liberals stand in their way.
