There's been an uptick in flu cases this year, sadly. So many in that age group unvaccinated, so it will affect them adversely, one would imagine. Sad. Good news is, that COVID and RSV are down, due to vaccinations, one assumes!!!😘
Nerve wracking.
Originally thought it was a sinus infection, then maybe reaction to the antibiotics; it turned into a flu. Then complications caused Hyponatremia; you can have stroke or heart attack. He was in ICU 6 days on a slow sodium drip; too fast a drip causes brain swelling.
That is awful 😞 so sorry. My kid’s friend left school in an ambulance last week after passing out for 10+ mins. Had a fever of 107. Tested + for the flu at the hospital. She’s good now, but all of the friends were telling each other to get vaccinated after that (most are thankfully). It’s no joke!
Oh my gosh. I've never heard of 107 degrees! I'm glad she's okay; I wonder what the cause was.
Early Jan, Husband went to walk-in care thinking it was bronchitis. Walk-in was behind 6 hrs, so he went to the hospital ER; they said you're staying here ... another 6 days in CCU.
One of my kids ran temps so high when she was an infant the thermometer just said HI in red letters. Scared the snot out of me the first time. Learned quickly that was her norm. Thankfully she never had a febrile seizure. Her twin barely registered any fevers ever.
I got the flu vaccine in October. My wife didn’t a tested positive for flu last week. I ended up feeling symptoms start on Saturday. Yesterday, 103.8 fever. The flu is no joke.
It truly is no joke. Opted not to get a shot this year - I would get the shot, and end up with the flu anyway.
Got the flu last week, first time in 11 years or so and it KICKED MY ASS! 102.6 was my highpoint. Took 4plus days to feel ok. Mid-50s guy with no ULHC. Will get the shot for now on!
I've got the almost same story, thought I'd be ok so skipped it this year. Start to finish almost 3 months. Bedridden for week+. Missed work, etc. Right now my roommate is in week 3. I will getting it from now on.
Okay, yes, three cases, but the people Edward Jenner vaccinated when he invented the smallpox vaccine in 1796?
EVERY SINGLE ONE of them is DEAD now.
Coincidence? I think not!
And THIS man is who we should be running our Health and Human Services? The same one who's convinced the moms and dads of these poor teens that vaccines are a bad thing?
Okay, but his supporters sure seem to be capable of ignoring other things he says that they don’t like, to the point they trick themselves into believing he never said it.
At some point the blame has to lie with the individual. Acting like they had no choice allows them to escape blame later
That’s very sad to hear. According to Cal. Fam. Code §6926. A minor who is 12 years of age or older who may have come in contact with an infectious or communicable disease has the right to consent to a vaccine. Let kids know they can get it done themselves and in private. Let them make their choice.
"Unvaccinated" doesn't mean people opted to not be vaccinated, it simply means they were unvaccinated by a myriad of reasons, including being a tinfoil-hat proud owner, yes, but not just.
I agree. My wife is immuno-compromised and can't get any vaccine, even though she wants them. I therefore have to make sure I get vaxxed properly so I don't bring something home to her, and I do so happily.
Worth noting if these were minors, it would be their parents who are responsible for vaccinating them.
As an aside, the flu shot was always billed as “if you’re healthy it’s not a huge deal to get it”, with little messaging around how COVID wrecked immune systems and it’s more imperative now.
Gotcha. And yes, looks deceive alright. I joined Bluesky excatly for this - people can descant and discuss and get to the bottom of things instead of throwing acid at each other.
There's not a mandated to flue Vax teens. My age group there is, but the clinic has given me the printed sheet for two decades, I make an appointment for updating vaccinations which are categorically ignored by the health professsionals at my appointment
People still die from the flu. The percentage of people that die from the flu is almost as high as the people that die from covid. People with health issues and the ederly are at higher risk.
It was sarcasm, sorry it was not more clear. It was said to me over and over on social media. I was told I was stupid and uninformed to say people were dying from the flu and COVID.
Sorry, I didn't realize that. People need to be more respectful towards others that have different views or different ways of receiving information, especially since there is so much deception out there. You're not wrong that many people die from the flu and covid.
Vaccines are so important, and clearly disinformation is more dangerous than any lone virus. This is medical neglect. They died preventable deaths. Three children will never grow up now. Ugh.
Unfortunately for the flu, it's not that simple. Each year the virus evolves in different ways and various strains take hold. The Flu shot each year is based on the best guess of what will be the most prevalent strain. some years, they miss. Should still get it though.
It's not a guess. ~150 health orgs around the world send data on emerging flu strains to the WHO where they are studied and up to 4 strains chosen to develop vaccines for every year. Calling all of that coordination, research, and work guessing is an oversimplification.
I undersold the coordination quote a bit, and I apologize for that. I did try to end my message with a note that it's safer to get the flu shot than not. But I appreciate the correction.
I do feel horrible for the teens. They are innocent in all this. Their parents made their decisions for them or indoctrinated them into not trusting vaccines. I hope their parents suffer from massive guilt.
I hope you are not drinking the cool aid too. Young, old and immunocompromised are those in need of flu vaccinations. Reason is that their immune system is either under-developed, failing or not strong enough. I am 53 now but have taken the flu vaccine since my late 20s. Never caught the flu.
Nope. I've used Methylen Blue a lot to color plant tissues under microscope, that's all. That's just what we do in Europe with yearly flu vaccines. No need to be agressive.
Why did I hear 11,000 have died from this flu. Sad. A simple vax and you can live! Kids can live! We all can live with the right vax for the disease. Live!
They must have had underlying issues? In my country you get the flu shot if you’re 60+ and/or already have certain medical problems. Don’t remember anyone this young dying of the flu here.
Kids are getting sicker in the US. More cancer, more deaths from everything.
But it *couldn't possibly* have anything to do with the huge increase in childhood vaccines.....
We're not supposed to even *wonder* what those excessive vaccines are doing to us.
Well that's not good. Everyone ages 6 months and above is supposed to get a flu vaccine each fall here in America but some don't and it's really dangerous.
People in the Netherlands have actual healthcare and the ability to stay home from work/school without penalty when they are sick. It changes the odds somewhat.
So I just looked it up and it turns out we do actually! At least we do now, I don't remember getting it when I was a kid, but I'm 40. Adults are only vaccinated if there is particular need but kids are vaccinated every autumn at school. I have no kids so I didn't realise. Today I learned something.
Hey Chris. I don't know how to find out how many people get the latest flu shot. 1 thing we do know is that certain flu strains are deadly. It may be that the parents or guardians of those children may not have realized it should be a priority. I'm not here to judge.
It was in the article whose headline you decided gave you enough insight into these parents to remonstrate them as anti-vax. Look past headlines and read the reporting next time.
Dude, with the title and image, you're kinda making it look like the vaccine killed them while still trying to say they weren't vaccinated to begin with.
Serious AF flu A going around where I live. 2 with H1N1. People in their 40’s are critically ill in icu. One was vaccinated. None have any record of negative health history. All normal size.
San Diego remains the same willfully ignorant glorified military base whose claim to fame is complaining about the Mexicans who do all their manual labor. They are worse than Orange County. Too bad
Classic fear mongering article, which states itself that 80% of teens have not received flu shot. It also does not provide any information about the decedents, such as health status, coinfections, etc. Wake up people, you’re being played.
We do have research that indicates that COVID weakens the immune system, and more people having trouble fighting off common illnesses is one thing that I've seen researchers warn might happen for years now.
Regular flu kills many thousands of people every year, across all age groups. Each year, there are different strains, some worse than others, but make no mistake it is a potentially deadly disease.
"But it's just the flu" has been the excuse people are using to avoid vaccines, masks, and distancing. As if the flu doesn't kill thousands every year. More now that so many have damaged immune systems from repeat COVID infections
I'm vaccinated against the flu but that's because I'm in the older age group so I would be more susceptible and it's free for me but is it normal for younger people to get the flu jab.
A lot of people choose not to get the flu shot because it’s generally about 33% effective. Also most people who don’t vaccinate are liberal hippies. Stop judging people and worry about yourself all you assholes on here wishing people dead especially teenagers.
Flu vaccine still offers essential protection. A 2021 study showed that among adults, vaccination was associated with a 26% lower risk of flu-related intensive-care unit (ICU) admission and a 31% lower risk of flu-related death compared to those who did not receive the flu vaccine.
Also, the 33% figure is incorrect. “Flu shot efficacy can vary from year to year, depending on how well it matches circulating strains. However, it typically ranges from 40-60%.”
In my years as an ICU nurse, I never saw anyone sicker than a patient who’s flu ended up ravaging every organ system in their body. Young and old, such a preventable condition.
Sad, but unpreventable because RFK, Jr. told us vaccines don’t work, and he knows everything about science and medicine. That’s why Trump appointed him to run DHHS.
A lot of people don’t get the annual flu shot. I often don’t when I’m not working in a healthcare environment. But I have all the other vaccines and also have gotten additional when traveling.
As a physician, at one time on MEC, when someone said that physicians can opt out, I shut down the conversation very quickly. I said if you are willing to potentially infect patients in a hospital with a deadly disease, a physician should not be on staff. Vaccines work.
Oh absolutely, but if per chance the strand inoculated is different from what’s going around, they aren’t as effective and it’s not a guarantee that anyone will catch it but physicians should definitely consider the environment they work in and take vaccines for themselves and their patients anyways
I don’t get these discussions. It doesn’t matter how deadly the flu is for teenagers, if they had more health problems or what the succesrate of flu vaccines for 1 person is. What matters is that there chance of survival would have increased if they were vaccinated. This is truly sad. 💔
Parents need to tell that to republicans who are hell bent on confirming vaccine denier…who wants to remove all guard rails for scientific research of diseases and viruses…to be head of Department of Health and Human Resources 🤨
Hey, but America no longer can depend on the CDC or NIH because Musk deems them "expendable". Afterall, they do not represent his investments and are, therefore, "unimportant".
What's going on here? There were no flu shots available when I was a teenager. Yet we got the flu fairly often and recovered quickly even without any vaccinations. Could it possibly be that much more virulent nowadays?
Guidance changes over time. My kids are 6 years apart and the guidance changed from the time I was growing up in the 90s and in between my kids being born in the 2000s. As we get more data and science advances things change.
As much as I think vaccines are super important, teens are not routinely vaccinated for the flu. It is recommended for older folks, for already sick individuals or small children.
Their deaths are incredibly sad...
Uptake of the flu vaccine is very low, especially among children. It’s not a particularly effective vaccine and the flu generally not that dangerous for kids and otherwise healthy people. This is a tragedy for sure, but not something to crow admit for pro vax people, of which I am one.
Eh. Should have been vaccinated. My cousin had two very young kids. She didn't vaccinate and now she's dead and they're out a mom. I felt sorry for her for one afternoon. Since then I can't really muster the effort to care about people dying because of their poor choices.
Sadly I feel zero sympathy. Not the teenagers fault but they would have grown up like the parents. Uneducated fools who just killed their children basically. It wasn't the flu per se. It was the lack of vaccination.
That's not true and unfair to the kids. Here's a little secret most Adults don't know or forget. It's nearly impossible to brainwash a kid. And most folks I know who had anti-vaxx parents went out and got vaxed at 18. Hate is taught.
I said NEARLY impossible. You should check out the Cult Lady on TikTok. My mother ran a cult for a while, but she grew up in one. She's also considered an expert on cults. She has a lot to say about the Nazi GOP.
they did NOT have vaccinations, yet the cover photo of this is a vaccine needle about to go into a forearm. Pictures and what they're attached to matter because we associate them together.
Did you get vaccinated for flu as a kid? I was never offered that when my kid was a teenager and I wasn’t asked to have it by a dr until I was in my late 40’s. I’m just confused by the ppl saying ‘they get what they deserve’ that’s messed up

Depends on the years, recs change. My oldest has been getting them most of their life and my younger since they were a baby bc the recs changed a few times in the 2000s. I grew up in the 90s when it wasn’t recommended for kids.
I agree with you, no one deserves it and that’s an awful thing to say.
It's rare but it happens. Look up pediatric deaths from the flu, year by year if you want verification.
When my nephew was a toddler, a kid in his daycare died of the flu. They had zero reason to expect it. Shook up a lot of people in that town.
This is NOT a comicated issue. The flu is very very dangerous. One may still contract flu after being vaccinated, but the vaccine, even if it is not a perfect match. Will tremendously increase survival odds & lessen the severity.
A lot of parents just aren’t aware of how deadly flu can be, and not everyone has a PCP to help them understand. Nothing in the article points to anti-vax or vaccine refusal.
History will NOT be kind to the scamdemic.
Or those that...
Killed patients.
Profited from it.
Closed schools.

Just like I said. There is a small percentage of people whom won't be protected by vaccinations. So if 100% of the population gets vaccinated, the effective coverage would likely be in the high 90% range.
It's constantly suggested in the pharma-funded media that all vaccines are "safe". Whey they're forced to admit that there are risks to every vaccine, the risks "just don't matter" and we're beat down for worrying about them.

I had a young substitute teacher in HS in the late 70s who was born and raised in Italy and spoke seven languages. She later opened up a successful yoga studio and wellness center in my hometown. She thought COVID could be handled through natural immunity and no vaccine. She died. Still shocked.
We had a local dude here in our town, big tRumper. While covid was going strong, he was holding get togethers and such at HIS restaurant, joked about covid being a little flu and wouldn't you know, he caught it and dropped dead.
Then his dumbass family & friends held a vigil/get together for him. Don't know if or how many people got ill from that. Do I have to say it happened in a super red city in Red FL? Well it did. The stupid runs deep in SWFL!
These fucking comments are disgusting. They were TEENAGERS you fucking assholes. The responsibility is on their parents to vaccinate them. All you dumbasses saying “thin the herd” were prob the same fucks who believed just let ppl die from covid. No better than MAGA.
I agree with you on the disgusting comments attacking the teens. I disagree with what you said about MAGA. MAGA was just against an experimental vaccine that has been know to kill people and cause serious health problems. The vaccines did very little to fight against covid.
The difference between getting covid while vaccinated vs while unvaccinated is substantial. Add the correlation doesn't necessarily equal causation issue.
When we have had virulent flu strains in the past I know that in my county, they would set up inoculation events at the high schools. Students could get their shots after classes and there would also be evening events so you could bring younger kids too.
My grandchild just had the flu. She was vaccinated and had a mild case. All the adults in the family are vaccinated and no one else got it despite being heavily exposed to her.
Same. I’ve gotten the flu shot annually since 2019 bc I work in healthcare. I’d advocate for it NOW, but I remember being told all through my younger days that it was optional bc I am overall quite healthy.
People miss that after COVID, our immune systems are scrambled.
It’s a combo of factors I think, and unfortunately a missed opportunity in terms of public health messaging. I’ve had a lot of patients who caught the flu just BEFORE they were finally going to get the shot, so anecdotally some were simply late to the party.
My parents were diligent about vaccines growing up, and still only my brother got flu shots bc he had childhood asthma. It wasn’t an imperative thing for healthy people.
I get a flu shot annually bc I’m a HCW, but there hasn’t been great comms on how the risks have changed for flu since COVID.
I am 58 and poor health and refuse to get the flu shots
Or any of the rest of the Vax shots when I got the flu shot made me sick all winter so never again
Not my problem that people are not more well read and know their legal rights. I do not allow another person to govern me though. I did however hand these out to the kids at Kroger. Apparently you need to read 1984 and Animal Farm. The cage you are in you still need to protect the weakest animal
The problem in the US is the amount of union busting and low representation, leading to them having vert little power compared to unions in other countries.
So you just blindly trust them I will never trust any one blindly and if you open your eyes doctors are only practicing medicine they don't know everything
It depends on the medium the vaccine was propagated in. I too got sick from it 20 years ago. I asked questions, found out why and have been taking it every year since without an issue.
I know the parents are to blame but what is the age of consent for vaccines in the US? here in Quebec at 14 years old they can consent to any medical procedure without notice to the parents. In most of Canada it is 16.
The headline was not very clear, for sure. They died from the flu infection. They were not vaccinated, and vaccination might have saved their lives. I got my vaccines (COVID, flu, pneumonia) just a couple weeks ago. Please get vaxed!
Thousands die of the flu every year. Last year 253 aged 5-17 died, and 2,705 aged 18-49 died.
In the 1918-1920 pandemic, teenagers and young adults died at the greatest rate. It's thought a strong immune response was the cause (a cytokine storm).
Lots of people who didn’t get the flu vaccine die from the flu every year. A good friend of mine died from H1N1 flu 11 years ago. He wasn’t vaccinated. He went from “I’m not feeling that good today” to organ failure in a week
Wow. Thank you so much. I am very pro vax but never got the flu shot for me or my kids. I will from now on. I didn’t have any idea it was that serious even if you weren’t immunocompromised or vulnerable.
This years flu strain is brutal. Even if your vaccinated it can still kick your butt. However your chances of hospitalization and dying go down if you got vaccinated. Please get vaccinated people.

Went to the local ER last week for my husband’s heart condition.. Per the admitting nurse most of those there were due to the flu.. Of the 100 ER beds 77 were full and many in the hallways. The main hospital was full so had to wait for 3 days in an ER bed for him to be transferred to cardiac unit
H5N1 is still the flu, GeNiUs. Maybe pay attention a little more and think critically too. The flu has dozens in not hundreds of strains and any of them can be deadly.
30+K people die in the US every year from flu. That is not because they are all unvaccinated, of course, but there are many thousands in that number that die that didn't get the vaccine. Stupid wasteful thing to die from.

I had a schoolmate in the 70s whose father was a doctor. He told me: "If you get a flu shot once you'll need to do it each year again or else..."

I'm 63, never had a flu shot, never will.
Had the flu twice - once right after having a baby (he got a very mild case), once after coming out of the covid isolation and being exposed for hours in a closed car.
Few days of not feeling too good, no big deal.
Yes.....flu is not a cold and why!!! MAGA's read if you can;
Flu virus infection of the respiratory tract can trigger an extreme inflammatory response in the body and can lead to sepsis, the body's life-threatening response to infection. And then you DIE, but you keep supporting Dr Death JFK & FOTUS
How stupid media must be to post about tragic death of 3 unvaccinated teenegers and link that with a photo of someone being vaccinated. That sends exactly the opposite message and most people are visual (and many will not take time to read it correctly) ARGHHH
What quote? If patents are too stupid not to do everything to protect their children, this happens. I vaccinated my children without any hesitation. They are still alive and healthy. See how that works?
the darwin statement- when people say that the tend to be talking about 1 animal- not their kids or victims. thats manslaughter not survival of the fittest.
also hesitation doesnt always have anything to do with antivaxxers damaging access; its a political movement- its pushed onto others too.
I can't understand most comments here. Many (half?) people don't get flu vaccines regularly and it has nothing to do with them being antivax (let alone "trumpers"). Seriously, look it up.
There use to be a time you only got the flu shot if you were older or had health issues. My kids have been getting the flu shot since 2012 but that was only after I got sick. I got the flu anyway this year. 😩 It’s brutal and rivals Covid with sticking onto you for weeks
Interesting. In Norway where I live, a flu shot is only recommended for specific groups. One of those groups is people over 65. I’ve taken the shot since I was 60 myself, though. Roughly 25% of the population is vaccinated.
Norwegian restaurant workers and the like have easy access to sick leave so they don't spread the flu. In the US, that is not the case. SO flu spreads faster, so our medical sector recommends universal flu shots.

Well at least it didn't get autism 😕

Flu shot messaging was, for a VERY long time, that it’s optional unless you’re high risk.
People miss that after COVID, our immune systems are scrambled.
I think the main reason it felt optional is bc some years they do better at anticipating what will be circulating than others
But the same happens when someone gets really sick with the flu, people realize maybe they should get a shot

If you don’t then there is no point consulting doctors whatsoever and you can look on the internet for quackery alternatives, Middle Agee style.
Exception is implied consent for treatment in emergency situations, but otherwise it’s up to the parents.
Both times, I thought I would die. The fever, aches, and chills were awful. After that, I decided a flu shot was better than getting the flu.
