It helps to remember that Sanders was not behind the Sanders campaign. That was an alliance of disaffected Dem volunteers and donors who initially wanted to draft Elizabeth Warren. He was the second choice.

Never had a sense he had a great handle on the organization he joined.

I think the second produced the first - Bernie could absolutely have broadened his appeal and brought in a lot of people for whom he was the second choice, but his staff treated, for instance, Warren supporters as if they were traitors for not picking Bernie to begin with

As someone who worked as a low-level advisor on the 2020 campaign, I have a great deal of respect for Bernie and for many of the people who worked for him, but it was about 65/35, 65% people who you would be happy to staff an administration and 35% people who should never ever

Bernie had two distinct staffing issues on his campaigns, especially 2020. One was grifters and infiltrators, and one was people who didn't understand the difference between a campaign for NY14 and for President. The second one was far more serious in my opinion.

This is why I’m a lot more optimistic about AOC. Whereas Bernie is sort of reflexively anti-establishment, AOC is circumstantially anti-establishment. She wants her vision to become the establishment on her own terms, but she knows she has to use anti-establishment means to accomplish that.
