a 'your possessions and money don't actually matter' approach is sure to work with Americans, a public notoriously amenable to sacrificing for the greater good, as Jimmy Carter's second term attests.

Gordon Gecko just choked on the bite of giraffe he was chewing when that message hit his beloved Fox news 🤣🤣🤣. The Boomers hit their stride (and our downfall) w the rallying cry “GREED IS GOOD!” Wall St was the backdrop for rom coms! Millennials on were raised on convenience for $$ lifestyles.
I wonder if it will hit different, if only among his cult followers, for the same reason that only Nixon could go to China.
Carter saying we need to live more modestly: "Hectoring leftist hates freedom"
God-emperor Trump crashing the economy for fun: "Stocism in the face of suffering is masculine"
Electing Reagan a few short years after Nixon resigned was the first sign that America's paint wasn't just peeling, but there's a lot of rot underneath it.
Well, to be fair, we also saw this willingness in the response to COVID-19, when everyone was incredibly happy staying home for months at a time, giving up haircuts if needed, and masking as a national focus.
Exactly, it's not like conservative politics since 2020 has been almost entirely redefined as one big middle finger to being told during a crisis that "we're all in this together," or anything
People keep saying things like this, and they're probably right, but it's not obvious they're right. Americans will put up with a lot of misery, provided they don't think it's for a good cause (look at healthcare). Trump's valorization of selfishness doesn't actually require rational self-interest.
someone on my feed was arguing that 40% of Americans agree with some blue check Xitter galaxy brain arguing the principle of not bottoming to ferriners is more important than material trifles. LOLOLOL no.
Not enough people get how many voters REALLY voted Trump bc he signed the fucking stim checks
this isn't letting Trump voters off the hook or saying they AREN'T (also) really racist bc they absolutely are.
what i am saying is they're mostly venal, ignorant and able to change on a dime. the "cult" is there but it is not 40%. and even those are not mostly Xitter-bowel poaster weirdos.
I’m sure making conservative, notoriously selfless and empathetic, lose all their stuff won’t backfire at all. These are they guys always thinking about what’s best for everyone and rising above petty concerns like retirement.
You'd THINK that. But the following of Trump patterns cult behaviour more than a political movement. I've yet to see a SINGLE Trump voter who has anything but praise for what Trump's doing right now. "Sure, it'll hurt for a while! But finally we'll be great again!" is a very common line.
It’s akin to the Brexit will provide a land of milk and honey in the end if you are all patient. We’re all still waiting. It worked then with the stupid and the gullible, it will probably work now with the MAGA cult.
[Right-winger looking at decades of Americans sole focus on consumerism, with gov and corporate policy focused on making stuff cheaper]: Americans are actually not very focused on physical things, we don't really need *stuff*.
I don't expect they'll be happier. What I expect is that they'll continue to blame Democrats, trans people, "illegals," and all their favorite scapegoats for their 401k tanking and their local schools and hospitals closing.
I think they have to at least be more hopeful, though, in the sense that the narrative has to be that Trump will make things better in the long run, if he hopes to stay in power.
Fox's historical blame game works better when out of power.
Some of them will catch on, though most of those will never admit that in public. I mean his approval ratings are in the toilet and I think this is part of why he's making a big public deal of Elon supposedly stepping aside, because his cult doesn't love Elon they way they love him.
... ostensibly confident seems fitting, too. A threadbare narrative of hope, perhaps, just thick enough for them to deceive themselves (some people are so frustratingly good at that).
Nah it’ll work for a small number of maga fanatics, a larger number will loudly support him and then the next day they will tell you to your face they always knew he was bad news. I saw it happen with bush, it’ll happen here.
It’s possible the story will be ‘trump was the greatest president ever until he was betrayed by that bastard (insert advisor of choice, personally I think it will be musk) because trump worked himself to death for us and so was too old and tired. We knew it all along but it was worth trying…

Yeah, good luck with that.

It’s pretty well grounded in their actions.
It will not be good
Or else I just need to accept I don’t know anything about the US anymore.

It’s just not been properly or fully implemented.
The UK isn’t taking full advantage of all the opportunities.
Dolchstoßlegende
Will that be enough to offset damage elsewhere? I guess we'll find out.
Given a vice-signaling, anti-intelectual appeal with religious and patriotic trim, Americans will be more willing to tighten their belts. :|
Nothing here is valued over the money
His real problem is Wall Street just lost 6t in value in two days
They’re probably already hiring the sniper
If he keeps the media, we'll find people in worsening material conditions happier than we expected.
