If Anita Bryant started her whole shtick right now she’d have 2 million Twitter followers and get shoved onto everyone’s feeds with explicit support from politicians and tech leaders

Yes it is, but she had followers and admirers then too. There were just no places to admire without identifying yourself then, so they were more quiet.
This whole social media thing would work better if people had to show ID at the door.
and the worst thing we could do in response would be to send a man to throw a pie so hard at her face. that was not an auspicious start for the lgbt rights movement.
Whilst we all had to read that she's been cancelled.
I wish I could get cancelled. My music would sell better, podcasts and Bluesky would have more followers, and I might have a radio show again.
I mean, it'd be a problem for my work. Sure. But think of the engagement metrics from being 'silenced'!
I remember that well. Not one gay bar would make a screwdriver since they all banned orange juice from their premises. Now she would have been heralded like Nancy Mace
They didn't have twitter in those days, it was all in the newspapers and TV. Yeah, the republicans did love her, even though she destroyed her career. Karma.
She's been dead almost a month. I guess we were too busy Christmas shopping to celebrate earlier. I hope her friend Rush Limbaugh was there to welcome her.
I lived through that bullshit. I watched people die. Held some. I celebrated when Reagan died as retributive justice for all those who died. I celebrate now.
Heck, she would probably have started her own line of "fruitless" pies. And the MAGA mob would gift them to each other for the holidays... sorry, I mean Christmas
I was in junior high in Florida when she started her campaign. I literally saw how it gave license to homophobia. It increased by a huge amount. She caused so much damage to the mental health of so many people. Many never recovered. And the bullying and violence. She’s pure evil.
As a fellow Floridian, she is the first public figure I remember besides Jimmy Carter. I was super-young, but I remember being confused by why she was famous even then.
I looked her up and was surprised to find she only died last month. Her legacy will be championing two dying issues; anti gay bigotry and Florida citrus.
Perhaps since she was mentored by Billy Graham, but I am sure Kathryn Kuhlman, American evangelist and preacher, would have had a very significant and phenomenal outreach.
Absolutely true. So many of us thought we were moving further into an Age of Enlightenment. How mistaken we were.
Whether we're truly backsliding into a new Dark Age or merely seeing the frantic, last gasp of patriarchic authoritarianism, we'll see.
It’s what happened then minus the tech bros. She was covered by the media relentlessly and politicians were lining up to support her. The more things change the more they stay the same
There will be others. And, they will be more adept at using this and forthcoming tech.
Folks make the mistake believing that a win means that no more wins are required. Ignorance and fear always have to be defeated-
A Face in the Crowd diva amassed a huge following by spewing virulent bigotry across well organized social channels. Their popularity brings conflict with the President who was elected on a bigotry-adjacent platform. Our diva threatens to mobilize millions to march on the WH. Hilarity ensues.
Progress often sparks resistance, as societal advancement occurs in cycles. After moments of change, backlash can threaten hard-won rights. To protect these gains and push forward, we need sustained advocacy, education, and coalition-building, ensuring progress is not reversed. #Equality
I honestly thought that Anita Bryant died about 2 decades ago. When I was a kid, I saw her commercials for Florida orange juice, and I remember her anti-gay propaganda.
the only difference between Anita and Chaya is that Anita was a singer first
Chaya has no marketable skills and is actually really weird and off-putting when she tries to present herself in public
Anita was the one who started and spearheaded the whole gay ppl are a danger to children thing. And that narrative still persists today. So her legacy is profoundly dangerous.
Do you think it's because people have lost the ability to think for themselves or they've never had it? I've never seen anything like this, and it is frightening.
It just means social media has amplified the worst assholes.
But Anita Bryant had a lot of support back then even without social media, and gay people had to hide for fear of losing their jobs and families and even doing jail time.
It is imperative that we do not go back to the bad old days.
Whatever happened to live and let live? People put more energy into condemning how people live their lives instead of focusing on how they live their own.
The "Day without Sunshine lady" would surely be clouding up the skies today like she muddied the juices yesterday. I just think of all the damage she did "saving our children" by exposing them to dedicated "youth pastors" to keep them from "turning" gay, with X as a platform who knows.

Oh, and Charlie Kirk. Lol
She’d have a cabinet position no doubt

What a hero though. I love him.

In the end, Rowlings won't be remembered for her books. Just like Bryant isn't remembered for her acting.
They're only remembered for their hatred
and fuck Ron DeSantis, also.
No points for godding?
YOU KNOW IT’S SAD BUT TRUE…
I hope hell for her is a nonstop forced video stream of gay people just being happy.
We are in a class war, folks.
The oligarchs must go!

Yep- she would have thrived today!!
