My wife and I stayed with one of her relatives one night before a flight the following morning and they turned the router off and put one of these things over it at 9pm then went to bed.

If my ISP has backdoor access to "my" router and it has wifi functionality that I plan to never use (say, because the ISP has backdoor access to the key as well), it's either use something like this or cut some circuit traces.

I did, but must still connect to the ISP's supplied hardware (which integrates router and AP functionality) to interface with their network service.

You can always buy a router and just call them to set it up. They should have a list online that tells you what features you need (assuming you're not buying your own to buy one better than they offer). I'm under the impression that they have to offer that, legally.

The router having backdoor access for the ISP means they (or someone with their credentials) can turn it back on.

If you alone don't have root access, the hardware isn't really yours.

I have been tempted to put grounded chicken wire lath in my walls and copper screens in my windows to eliminate wifi interference from the 20 or so other wifi signals from my neighbors. Though I would probably need to put a Cell booster in my attic to keep cell phones working.

We have the opposite problem. The HVAC, and structural steel are such that wifi from one end of the house to the other is iffy without having repeaters.

I actually need to use an ethernet cable to the extender to have reliable internet.

I have that too, but the top level sees the neighbors wifi better than the main router downstairs. I am not a repeater man, I set a different router on the second floor on the other side of the house.

Wifi is a shared medium, neighbors crap eats some of the bandwidth.

This reminds me of the time I was troubleshooting a wifi router for a customer. She'd wrapped the router in several towels and stuffed it behind her couch and the wall to protect her from the "dangerous waves", and was complaining the signal was weak.
