That has been the single most bitterly comforting thought keeping me going, Im not dead yet because they are rich and I'm not their immediate threat. Other rich people are their true enemies.
We were a rich county. That's over. Right now, we're eating through our reserves. Whether we will be more like Russia or North Korea remains to be seen.
My political experience thus far has taught me that, at least in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the UK and US have patterned pretty closely together because of a lot of shared cultural history and issues (think Thatcher and Reagan, Blair and Clinton, Brexit and Trump…).
This is also why I feel very wary of trying to get more objective news about the US from UK sources like, I actually do not trust the Guardian that much, as it turns out.
In France far right people use to say "we never tried a far right gov! Maybe we should?" but not only we had one (Vichy) which was atrocious but we have seen that happening in many other countries and it was horrible every time.
No, it's in a dumb way and I am sick of pretending that we don't have stupid people there's reasons why the states of Florida, Texas, and Ohio exists to have bad states be examples with stupid people.
I know Murdoch has media outlets in multiple rich anglophone nations, but I’m wondering if anywhere else has anything like Sinclair and its ilk - coordinated subtle propaganda all day via a channel that was the peak of trustworthiness in living memory.
The US between WWII and the OPEC embargo was a very easy place to be a stupid person if you were white and male. There is a lot of nostalgia for that, more than in arguably any other rich country except maybe Australia.
I think this is also part of why none of Trump's potential successors have his juice with the base: they're not dumb as a bag of broken rocks and everyone can tell.
* JD Vance: putting on an act
* Marco Rubio: not dumb
* Ron DeSantis: intelligent
That's a big part of the bond. He talks like not merely an uneducated person - it's remarkably easy to put one's refinement aside - but a genuinely stupid one. "He talks just like me!", say people who can't understand marginal taxation, or trade, or how the electric power system works.
