I know this is functionally similar, given that core costs are the hardest to fund, but I’d only give unrestricted donations. We don’t buy shares in a company and then force them to spend the cash on AI for widget optimisation or whatever, so why do we insist on project restrictions with charities?

I worked in arts eduction 18-25+ years ago, this was being called for then and was so rare. Both main places I worked had elements of core infrastructure funding from different routes and it made such a difference even at a basic level of organisation, planning, etc.

This is my lottery winning plan. Give grants for running costs, not explicit projects, to keep things going that support educational options. Thinking small rural schools, home educators, alternative provisions. An extra targetted workshop is nice. Salaries or subscriptions are more useful.

I'll never understand funders'/foundations' reluctance to pay core costs, it makes things much harder. But then, I work in fundraising, so would say that... (Trusts isn't my remit anymore so it comes up less, but you get it with corporates too & it can be infuriating, having to turn money down)

To be fair right now fundraising at work are struggling with raising money for specific interventions too! This is a great point though Sam losing loads of great colleagues who will reduce our capacity at present.
