Hey, Bluesky, help a person out if you can: what's your fave SCIENCE FICTION BOOK with asexual and aromantic traces published PRIOR to 2000?
Note: I'm not looking for definite rep. I'm just looking for what resonated with people because my knowledge of pre-2000s scifi is... not great.

(If you’d accept fantasy, Tamora Pierce’s Protector of the Small series was published 1999-2002)
Tuf (Tuf Voyaging by George R. R. Martin) I think would be ace/aro
The Oathbound by Mercedes Lackey has ace/aro magically applied via religious vow
I’m so glad I asked. I bounced off so much older scifi, but I’m getting SO MANY books that sound like a delight. 😄 Even if they end up not working for this, I’ll have fun! 😍
Sorry 'bout that. 😅
Yeah, older works are, ime, more likely to be dubious than good. Exceptions exist - Jo Walton’s Sulien books are a very good example and even those can be misread as “ace because trauma” - but most of what I read has been, uh, interesting.
And tbh because I’m not well-grounded in early aspec sf, I still very much need the wide spread of things to build that foundation!
Tara Harper's Cat Scratch Fever, I *believe* might be close. I can't find my copy to verify (grumble!)
Likewise, Lindskold's Brother to Dragons, Companion to Owls. Probably more closer to disability rep, but maybe? I forget.
Thank you! <3
Perhaps a reach but it's where my mind went.
(But if I can even just dilute the presence of my main example for engineered asexuals with something NOT by a maga and terf for these points, I will take it and call myself lucky.)
(But also 😫 I don’t waaaaanna reread Left Hand of Darkness.)
Plus, lbh, if I had been looking for fantasy recs too all the ones I got would’ve been PERFECT. I’m only sad the fourth I got isn’t for the Sulien books. I’d be so deeply amused and delighted.
Thank you! 😄
Hmm... Ermshwiller again, The Mount? (but again pov character is a minor)
