Went ahead and bought a camera I’ve been thinking on for a while before the existing stock depletes and I have to pay a stupid tariff on it, so early happy birthday to me, I guess

Oh, you mean Nikon & Canon won't immediately tool up to make their awesome photographic instruments here? I'm so disappointed, I thought our village idiot was going to bring manufacturing back.
Right? I was having car issues and terrified I’d have to dip into my dwindling retirement $ to buy another. We could make it work but it’d be expensive and wasteful.
Mine isn't that bad, a big issue for me is while at work I wear the left one a lot and the right one just sits in the charger. My brother dropped his in some paint...so they are completely gone now. I am waiting to see what he says about the new ones.
Smart move- I upgraded my old phone & watch and bought a car to replace the dead one in my driveway...I must admit it feels GREAT to drive a Japanese car rn, my own little F**K YOU to this administration
Good for you! I've been debating on investing in a soapmaking kit for an early birthday gift for myself too tbh. I wanna learn how to make bar soap and Castile soap, since ya know, even soap prices are about to sky rocket
Made several large (to me anyway) purchases including a new(to me) car, cell phone, and laptop in advance of this administration cuz I knew it was going to be a cluster. Thought about moving retirement funds to somewhere safe just didn't know where that was.
I’m really thankful to be able to buy extra non-perishables and get my passport renewed this month. I am very worried for the folks who can’t afford groceries already.
I just bought tons of canned food, toiletries, cat food, OTC medicines and first aid supplies, just about anything I could think of that might be getting more expensive, or less safe due to less govt regulators.
I went ahead and got a new phone (which I needed) and stocked up on non perishable necessities. I’d rather pay a little more now for more than a fuckton later for less.
Picked up a new MacBook today. After 9 years my old one couldn’t run certain software (looking at you, Microsoft 😠). I could’ve made it work for a while longer but seemed like the time.
That's why I upgraded my computer and phone last year. He promised he was going to do all this shit, and for once in his entire shit excuse for a life, he wasn't lying.
I haven’t bought anything but essentials in the last couple of months but went ahead and bought the side-by-side we’ve been talking about for a long time…before it goes up by 50% or can’t get one at all. That’s it though. I’ve decided it’s bare necessities for my house until this insanity stops.
I recently bought a year’s worth of clothing and tequila, respectively. We also got our son a car before that’s not possible. Things in Dayton and the the country are gonna get bad. John, are you tracking that Ohio is about to defund public libraries? What are we doing 😭😭😭
Like an idiot, back in February ago MY birthday present to myself was sending a beloved Sony camera in for minor repairs, and now I am getting weekly emails saying the parts are back-ordered and wondering whether tariffs are going to be a problem....
The only bad news is that the morons will claim that this is proof that the terrorist are good because there will be a short term bump in economic activity. No one will dare tell the orange dictator that this is actually a really bad sign.
I just bought an espresso maker (completely vanity purchase) because I found an “open box” and it was 20% off its current price and I figure those will go quicker and most of the stock is on back order for new ones. TFG is so useless!
I'm starting to save money for my next camera, but I'm not planning to make that purchase for another 18 months at least, by which time I hope some kind of sanity has returned to the country. (I am not OPTIMISTIC about this, just...hoping.)
I recently bought a new bed and a new (used) car. I quipped that it's probably good timing since I probably won't be able to afford either later this year. I've been saying that about everything I've been buying this year. I've been bracing for the tariffs while others have been seemingly oblivious
Yeah, I bit the bullet and bought a new Japanese stereo receiver before the tariffs explode the price. All good, though, because the music it spews keeps me sane.
That’s what pushed me into buying a resin and a filament printer each finally earlier this year, was worrying about tariffs. We also managed to save up enough to get a few other appliances replaced or serviced over this last year to future proof. His tariff talk had me worried early.
Valid. Times of cheap goods being mass produced elsewhere for US consumers are basically past us for a significant while. Not only will taxes drive prices up, but so too will reduced demand. Even oligarchs shopping in Hong Kong will pay double.
I was wondering whether buying a Mesa Boogie amp last year was a wise decision from a money POV (their RRPs here in Europe are somewhat ridiculous), but in retrospect...I'm glad that I didn't wait until this year 😬
I thought it was fortunate that my PC crashed a few weeks ago so I went shopping for a new one immediately instead of going with a temporary solution until the end Windows 10 support made a new one necessary. And Best Buy had a great discount at that very moment.
Yes, i'll be stockpiling coffee for my husband. We are late to the party, but we be preppers now. Apparently. We'll have a garden too. Gotta learn how to eat veggies tho.
We absolutely pulled the trigger on a car for the oldest two days ago. Not ideal but will surely be less so if we wait. All in all got a good deal on it considering.
Yup. I just bought a bunch of clothes and a couple of pairs of my walking shoes, enough to last me through the next 5 years easily. Sorry, struggling malls, I won’t be seeing you at all for a few years.
I'm in 5 book clubs in my public library a month. I'm also way down in the "ramen for dinner" income bracket. My books all come from the library. But I yammer on about books all the time, and then friends buy them.
Excellent idea. I went ahead and purchased patio furniture even though it will be some months before we have all the pavers down.
Oh, and there's a big stash of vanilla carefully hidden in the house. Trade goods.
I invested in a new laptop and a new car not because of potential tariffs, but because they either went wobbly or stopped working entirely. My stuff seems to have good timing when it breaks down.
Now I am curious if there is a going to be a positive blip in consumer spending as the middle class secures their desires before the prices go up. We might all be inadvertently bolstering Trump's economic numbers in the short term.
The stock market crash will overshadow any consumer spending numbers. I bought my new phone right after the election. And the fancy grow light shelf system to expand my ability to grow our own produce. Fewer flowers but more veggies this year.
Don’t keep us in suspense. Which make and model? Also, it’s traditional to celebrate a new body with a complimentary new lens, so what lens are you going to get to go with your new body?
[I did the same thing three days ago, trading in a Sony A9 for a nearly new A1.]
Sad that your local manufacturers producing great products based on imported components are going to get hit bad in all this. I was looking at a FRAMEWORK laptop to replace my 9 year old Dell XPS, who knows how much more X-ey they'll be now... Runs Linux or Windoze https://frame.work/gb/en/products/laptop16-diy-amd-7040
In January, we updated our technology and started a “deep pantry”. We also got my Dads 2A security device from my sister. Hope for the best and have a bunker for the worst.
Got a new roof last year. Likely some workers not fully documented. But having done roofing in my 20s, I respect anyone willing to do that work for that pay; I don't care where you're from. Kudos for supporting your family.
I got my daughters old laptop instead of buying one to replace my ancient one. But my sewing machine died & im not sure whether to fix or get a new one before tariffs. Cost nearly same to have it looked at as to buy new. Buying my mexi coke & Japanese mayo in bulk tho!
Keep an eye on fb marketplace when you get moved and settled. I was able to pick up an excellent condition preowned Canon T7i with bag, og box, and 4 lens for $350. When I priced them out on B&H it valued at over $1200!!
Lots of lightly used high/professional quality cameras and lenses out there to be had. A cheaper lesser quality body paired with a top of line used lens is a good compromise.
Yes, pick lens quality over body megapixels and features any time! That and "does not annoy me using it". Which is why I traded up my Fujifilm X100 all in one (poor man's Leica) through a couple of models until they got rid of most annoyances. Then stopped as new models are more annoying.
Seriously, buy a second hand Fujifilm X100F and you will love taking pictures with it. Wide angle lens adapter which screws on the front is good, maybe a lens shade. Oh and a thumb grip. You're done. Wow, they are still expensive even 2nd hand! Guess other people find them "least annoying" too!
I've taken a few photography classes and it helped me a lot but some of these new cameras make me appreciate the technology of just point and shoot and not worry about the settings you had to deal with only a few decades ago.
A camera is my everywhere tool. I have a few smaller cameras, & a Canon 7ti w/zoom & other lenses. Healing/therapy comes with catching a perfect action shot.
I agree. When economic reports come out & people are still spending I expect it will be because lots of us are buying now for the upcoming months. I made several biggish purchases this week for business & bought new shoes. normally I would have staggered the purchases out more, but I can't risk it.

But now you've got me thinking about a digital upgrade. Grrr.
Are you interested in an anything serious serious serious with me ?
I figure the sub-$20 clothing items are gonna be a thing of the past, soon.
More profit before more tax and more profit.

I am so depressed dude
Although how is a DOGE-ified US state bureaucracy even going to deal with all the paperwork and enforcement?
My country's couldn't really after Brexit massively increased red tape and cross border trade barriers.
Also, I’m SO TIRED of disposable technology. 😭
Ps. Happy birthday! 🎉🥳🎂
Our other EV is leased; not really sure what we're going to do when that runs out.
Enjoy your camera!
I guess she’ll have to watch it happen, in order to understand.
As opposed to diving heavily into to an almost entirely "canned beans and whiskey" investment portfolio.
If you can, buy fair trade.
And having a fair amount in my freezer and tins, pasta etc in my cupboards did used to remove a bit of worry when I was between jobs and more skint.
To the beanery, and then to the laboratory supply store for something more shelf-stable.
We need to get a car for our oldest and we are debating very heavily if we buy now or wait.
The problem is dealers almost certainly know anyone walking in now is trying to beat the clock and jacking up prices.
Early is good.
You'll be happy to hear that the first book that popped up on the library's website as a suggestion for me to borrow was Starter Villain.
But is it irritating to a novelist that I bought an ereader based on ease of library borrowing?

Also, libraries mean not pirated.

Resist!
But if it makes you happy, then okay.
Get another hobby.
You don’t use it you lose it.
Unfortunately, the juice is also cursed.
