If Sen. Cory Booker makes it to 7:19 p.m. EST, he will break segregationist Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond's record for his 24 hour 18 minute Senate floor speech against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

Had to look that up. It was in support of open records - how wonderful!
"In 1977, Meier set the world record for longest filibuster. From the floor of the Texas Senate, Meier spoke mostly uninterrupted for 43 hours to fight a bill he viewed as an attack on the state's open records laws"
We'll never forget it, Cory. You've made history today & so many of us are so proud of you & so grateful for your example of determination, devotion to duty & your moral & physical stamina.
But it would be great if several other senators do long speeches like this throughout the current Congress until the MAGA agenda is broken, right? Even if Senator Booker keeps the first-place record, a lot of other senators could tie for second place.
I want to see Vance try now. Not only would him just getting bodied by a man who's been up there for a day be great, but maybe he breaks a nail or smears his mascara and dies from the embarrassment?
Thurmond "took the minimalist route with a bucket. His aides set it up in the cloakroom so that Thurmond could pee while keeping one foot on the Senate floor."
Notably w/o “decorum” break as Segregationist Thurmond.:
“There is an argument to be made, Constitution Daily says, that Thurmond isn't the true record holder. In 1953, Oregon Sen. Wayne Morse (then a Republican) lasted 22 hours, 26 minutes — and reportedly did not get a bathroom break.”
Can I ask, as a non-American, is he delaying any specific passage of a bill? I remember someone doing that about an abortion bill so I’m wondering if this is the same.
No he isnt-no bill. But what was labeled as nothing but “performative” by the media, pundits, and politicians on both sides of the aisle, before he even started talking, has gotten more eyeballs by the minute and increasing media attention - And it has all been substantive.
*EDT (we're on daylight time, not standard time, and EST specifically means "Eastern Standard Time," and yes that's a pet peeve of mine, and anyway go Cory!)
Please continue to relay this this monumental selfless patriotic democratic filibuster movement started by Cory! Finally someone with some cojones!
Not that stupid Fetterman who is full of baloney!
Cory Booker stands up to rail against the Lying King!
For hours and hours Cory did sing!
Now we need some more senators to stand up!
And drink from that big truth cup!
Of course it would be a white guy from South Carolina having a hissy fit over civil rights… way to go to be written in history as a long winded
a$$hole.

let's not forget that racist Strom Thurmond's nickname was Sperm Thermond. Fathered a child with his family's 15 year old maid (a Black teenager)--and lived a life as not only a segregationist, but also a serial sexual harasser
Essie Mae Washington-Williams was the eldest child of Strom Thurmond. She was born to Carrie Butler, a 16-year-old African-American girl who worked as a domestic servant for Thurmond's parents, and Thurmond, then 22 and unmarried, who committed sexual assault on a child.
That's what I love about what Cory is doing.. his message is extraordinary, his passion is inspiring but eliminating and erasing any history to do with Strom Thrumond is incredible symbolism.
Not just anything to do with Strom
Thurmond, but specifically Strom Thurmond filibustering the Civil Rights Act of 1957, the first civil rights law passed since Reconstruction.
Just broke the record. Still going. at least for another minute.
While Thurmond just read the encyclopedia, Booker spoke with substance on the point of his speech. Of course, Booker has a lot more and better material to work with

This last hour has been the best...
Hope he continues.

(Same issues with seasons of "24"!)
Sen. Booker has broken the record. He should be in the Guinness World Records for his longest speech time.

What's next? Schumer trying to beat Joey Chestnut's hot dog eating record?
Maybe the Dems can hold a dance-a-thon for the rest of the week since John Mikeson closed up the House for a 5-day weekend.
The Dems are so lost & impotent.
