iOS and X use “Mitteilungen” while Facebook and Instagram use “Benachrichtigungen”, so I guess either of those should be ok. “Mitteilungen” risks being confused with DMs (although I’d translate DMs as “Nachrichten”). I wouldn’t use “Meldungen” or the English word, as some suggested.
You can also say "Mitteilungen", I've used interfaces with either one. But Benachrichtigungen is only one syllable longer than notifications, it's not so bad.
But of course we all would prefer
Notifications= Interaktionsereignisbenachrichtigung
(Direct) Messages = Individualkommunikationsereigniseingangsbenachrichtigung
„private Nachricht“ or „persönliche Nachricht“ (private or personal message) or „direkte Nachricht“ (DM)- could be shortened by using „Privatnachricht“ or „Direktnachricht“ (all for a single PM/DM) - if it needs to be plural, it‘s „Privatnachrichten“ or „Direktnachrichten“
„PN“ is also used
Use a bell icon with badges for side menus. Only use the full word as a heading, should be more space and you can abbreviate with „…“. Should work internationally. There should be established icons for all menu items.
Hi fluent German speaker here. This is completely false. Nobody ever uses the word Meldungen in this sense. You shouldn't rely on that bullshitting software for translation or anything else.
You might try ‘Kurzmitteilungen’ - though that’s only a little shorter than ‘Benachrichtigungen’ and actually longer not shorter (kurz) than ‘Mitteilung’. But ‘Notiz/Notizen’ (note/notes) might also work, depending on context and what one wants to express.
Benachrichtigungen are actually a pretty short German word. Mark Twain wrote that some German words are so long that they have a perspective. „These things are not words, they are alphabetical processions.“

That would be confusing.
Shift the idiom, find the _mot juste_
BTW: Is the translation file in the repository, so that people could create pull requests to improve it?
ChatGPT really sucks with translations! Not so smart after all lol!
