The only way to get drivers to slow down and be careful is to make them constantly afraid of scratching their cars.

So many drivers can't wrap their heads around the fact that the goal of traffic calming actually is to make it harder to drive fast. It's not a byproduct. Slowing you down is the actual point.

It might also get them to learn the actual exterior dimensions of their cars. Drivers in the EU tend to have exceptional spatial awareness of their car's space vis-a-vis the streets they use. Then again, their drivers' ed and licensing a far more comprehensive, so...

I like the bucket of bricks at Granville Island to make cars want to follow the law and yield to pedestrians. I don't have any bricks to do this in Brantford, but I think I can donate a bucket or two.

Over the Summer a guy in an SUV ran a red light by a significant amount and we collided. He proceeded to yell at me for scratching his paint with my bike then drove away. Maybe he learned a lesson that day.

I used to walk along a small road and started carrying a three-pronged pitchfork with the prongs pointing into the road, easily visible. Don't know how much it helped but I felt better

Every time I stop to chat with one of my neighbors in our residential neighborhood they complain about how fast the cars are going. I handed out a flyer explaining that if they just parked on the street to narrow the road so oncoming traffic would be forced to share a lane the speeding would stop.

It works like a charm. In Ritzy neighborhoods the city widens the planting strips to make pinch points, which work the same way.
