Arrghh, forgetting a power cable is one thing, but I somehow forgot to put my MOUSE in my laptop bag and had to make wordcount using the trackpad. And I move sentences around a LOT.

I have one of those tiny "travel" mice packed in my laptop bag. I hate it and never ever want to use it. But it's been in a pocket there for at least a decade, just in case
This is exactly why I have a spare mouse that only lives in my travel bag. Too many trips where I forgot it and had to write/edit with a trackpad. Along with a duplicate Advil bottle in my travel toiletries bag, and many other small forgettable items.
A quick way of doing a word count is to globally replace all spaces with a special character. The editor will (usually) tell you how many characters have been replaced. That's your word count minus 1. Do another global replace to change the special character back to a space.
This is why I have certain backup pieces of kit still new in the boxes in the back of my truck
Replacement keyboards & mice are such pieces
If one breaks, or if I find myself without, I have one I can go grab in a pinch. Sure, it'll be a cheapo, but that's better than using the clit pointer

That and there's Shift(+Ctrl)+Arrows for selecting text, in a pinch
