It is joined by a mock-vervain, probably Dakota mock-vervain, that volunteered behind a mangy rose that came with the house. Flower head is smaller than my thumb.

Sharing the bed is a volunteer fleabane daisy! Something in the Erigeron clan, but narrowing it down past that is not easy. Each flower is about the size of a dime.

Not actually a flower, but still wild—Native Plant Guy found this teeny tiny cactus in the yard. Maybe two inches across, tops, dwarfed by the gama grass surrounding him, I have not yet managed an ID but I’m so glad he’s here!

Moving to more domestic flowers, the crabapple came through our hard freeze like “snow? what snow?” and continues to bloom like anything. There are so many insects on it that you can hear the tree buzzing.

I spent a late winter/early spring few weeks taking photos of a rosette of mystery leaves in a cow track that the cows kept pounding down. I just couldn't figure out what it was till it flowered in spite of the cows - an evening primrose.

Yes! That’s another evening primrose—I think most of them do bloom in the morning, but the family got named after the evening ones. They’re actually great plants. They don’t need lots of care, they aren’t finicky, and pollinators love them.

Oh no, I grabbed that pick from an online nursery. I have one carefully tended yellow plant that does well but hasn't spread. It can get 3-4 feet tall in late summer and bloom every night (the blooms open over the space of a few seconds, you can WATCH them open).

If at all possible, mow around the clump or take a shovel and transfer it to somewhere where it can be left to naturalize. We need more prairie natives/semi-natives to feed bees & native insects.
