Can someone point me to an explanation of how left handed and right handed organisms could interact? My starting point is to think they could not possibly interact (and therefore pose no threat).
Yeah the article has links to explanations of chirality in chemistry and the transcript shows the researcher's concerns. Basically our immune systems wouldn't handle it well, we'd have to make new antibiotics that would be incompatible with non-mirrored life. See also stereoisomerism.
As I am a layman without scientific knowledge of this situation, I realize that you may be correct. As a thoughtful person, I will aquiess and allow for a study by persons more knowledgeable than me, to do the test. 🤔
The problem is that we could not interact meaningful with such life. So, no immune reaction or predation of, for example, an escaped mirror algae that proceeds to grow in and smother every living thing.
never going to happen to have a mirror organism, simply because enzymes are 'mirror' specific. Building blocks of proteins are also 'mirror' specific. good luck!
This is one of those fascinating articles the implications of which I can hardly comprehend. Why would one wish to create one of these mirror organisms?
If that's the episode I'm thinking, "normal" Sisco heads to the alternate universe to rescue Jake, and Kira definitely tries to seduce him. Also, IIRC Jake's birth mom is alive and a low key terrorist.
Crap, another thing to feed the wolf inside me with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. At least he's obese and therefore not a danger to the other wolf inside me with Generalized Depression Disorder who sleeps all day.
What better time than now trying this with the US going full fascism, joining had with Putin, Musk trying to get us all to die of radiation sickness while living on Mars, and the 2% chance of a giant Asteroid hitting Earth in 10 years. Might as well try this to finish us off fully. Redo.
Wouldn't these be quite easy to kill? Can we not just exploit the other handedness of their molecules to make poisons that affect them not not anything else alive? Just dose them with some suitable stereoisomeric poison.
Earth based life displays what we call 'homochirality', meaning that, for instance, the amino acids that comprise our DNA and protein structures are basically all made up of the right-handed enatiomer, while sugars are always the left handed enatiomer.
The worry with pursuing this research is that we don't understand how the 'mirror' versions of viruses and microorganisms would interact with our biology. There is a very real chance that they could entirely evade our immune responses, and infections could be completely resistant to treatment.
Just as with AI, would-be gatekeepers seek to control and destroy freedom of thought and knowledge. Nuclear power, AI, geo-engineering, GMOs, now this. They should not be allowed to do that, by having research be done all over the world where they cannot stop it.
The researchers believe there’s enough non-chiral material in a lot of life to allow, say, mirror E. coli to reproduce even without having any mirrored material to feed on, so it’d have similarly harmful effects to a regular bacterium without being susceptible to current antibiotics
On top of that, our immune systems wouldn’t recognize it immediately so it’d have a lot more damage potential than a non-mirror bacterium. And then once that spreads beyond humans who COULD develop new antibiotics, into wildlife, it could cause a lot of ecological destruction
Imagine a mirror org that is resistant to parasites, pests, and disease. It could be grown efficiently and later converted into specialized enzymes or organisms, for consumption or other applications.
Sure it could destroy life on Earth but it could also be really profitable.
Mother has an architecture,we have an architecture, the universe has an architecture...common denominator :dark energy: one caviat, the ego can not control dark energy, the ego knows nothing of dark energy, the ego can " invite " dark energy over the threshold, but without training, you get the "world "
I didn't have to create a doomsday isomer organism to learn this was playing with fire. We have plenty of examples that exist already in nature, ones we can safely extrapolate from.

Would the left-handed helix DNA possibly give rise to microbes that are naturally resistant to current antibiotics that target known microbes?
I am probably wrong but why?
Done: all life on earth is gone and the last living planet is done for.
Grow unholy armies of mirror freaks and be their god and creator.
Arm them and teach them to sniff out the naturals and exterminate them.
At this point why not?

I for one welcome our new black mirror overlords. Think how great "Opposites Day" Ted Cruz would be.
Sure it could destroy life on Earth but it could also be really profitable.
Keep doing the research!
