It's true. There's a really good paper by Stephanie Jamison about how various Indo-European traditions inherited marriage by abduction as a legal tradition...which also meant abduction marriage had legal requirements!

And so a lot of the wrangling over Paris and Helen in the Iliad is a fossilized half-remembered version of these legal traditions (did Paris abduct her legally?????? Did he really have a claim?????) that are stated explicitly in other traditions, e.g. India.

funny enough i’ve had multiple arguments with people making all the same claims. comparing immigrants to native americans and diplomats (even tho immigrants are afforded NO immunities) and arguing that the ark ruling doesn’t count cuz they weren’t illegal immigrants. it’s just absurd sophistry
