There are rumors swirling around the Social Security Administration today about massive staff cuts. But what isn't a rumor is that the incoming Commissioner wants to turn customer service over to AI bots. So if you're a senior that's their plan.

How is the IRS supposed to audit the wealthy oligarchs buying a green card and supposedly paying taxes if they are severely understaffed? Sounds a lot like a money laundering scheme dreamed up

So when your payment doesn't come through. You reach ot to ssi and get nothing but a recording so you go on line and chat with a bot that doesn't answer any questions and offers no solution and with no one to reach you're screwed. Like reaching out to FB.
Can I say that I’ve never had any version of nonhuman customer service solve any problem. The humans are bad enough, but every once in a while you find someone helpful.
Have you ever tried to call social security admin? Literally hundreds of tries, plus letters to every SSA office in my state (OR) but finally got an unplanned phone response from an agency office in Queens, NY. A.I. would be an improvement.
I believe that they will be purging the disabled. Every 5 yrs you are asked to prove that you are still disabled, through medical records. I think they will tell you to get reassessed and start denying people who “cannot prove” they are disabled.
I was told by an acquaintance that the acting Commissioner has requested plans for a 50% cut to all staff (including ALJs, which the White House has now declared at-will employees of the president).
I used to work in legal services helping people access their SSA benefits. It’s already so incredibly difficult to get someone from SSA to pick up the phone or return a call. Any reduction in staff, let alone a halving, would be catastrophic.
Also, as CNN points out, Congress is going to be involved at some point, because these are massive changes being proposed - and ironically, the end of Chevron deference means Vought/Musk/etc. can't just do them; they must go through Congress or the courts.
I mean, what could go wrong ? Seniors are well known for their tech skills navigating around AI and other fascist crap to replace the workforce. Should be a breeze for any 84 year old to navigate.
I don't think I have ever had a chatbot give me a useful answer to any problem I have had, since chatbots are literally just an annoying pop-up FAQ page in chat format.
Youngest Gen X will turn 60 this year & eligible for SS in 2 years. Many are comfortable (if not thrilled with) getting answers via chat bot. Addressing comms vs changing demos is smart, but it's unlikely that's the reasoning when any cost savings is applauded, and damn the service to taxpayers.
My spouse and I are both retired from IT. Between us we know a lot and you know what? We HATE AI. It creates more problems than it resolves. Cripes, dealing with untrained customer service folks with strong accents, living on another continent is easier.
Way to push all the Boomers to the Democrats, providing Democrats scream about that. I can't imagine too many things more frustrating than speaking to an AI chatbot about something I don't understand. The real humans at the SSA are so helpful, patient and, and they're NICE.
Great! I qualify later this year. What happens when you scream “Representative” to a chat bot? Seriously, luddite seniors are going to need some pro-bono advisors.
That was the one bright spot. If you called SSA, you got a person. They were actually trying to take care of us.
Hope the backlash against them for their wrecking and destroying every possible benefit to human beings is swift, sure, and solid and can't be reversed by the next nutso bigillionaire.
I oppose this because Trump, but all the automated interactions I've had with SS/Medicare have been quick and effective, while the 2 phone calls with irl staff have been... not either of those things.
Let me tell you something about chatbots and seniors.
As a UX professional who has overseen the deployment of more than one of those things, in one case for an older-than-average core demographic, customers HATE these things. Older customers doubly so. This will lead to bad customer service
I’ve been on Social Security for the past seven years, and have found the wait times comparable to or much better than anytime we consumers have to deal with calling a company. Since the DOGE horrors, I am now in my 57th hour waiting for a callback they promised on Monday morning.
The Republican blueprint is Russian oligarchy: In the 1990s, Russia’s most profitable organisations were dismantled and taken over by tycoons able to take advantage of an increasingly compromised privatisation process and seize control of hugely profitable state enterprises.
Have you ever had to contact Social Security? Living nightmare now can’t imagine it with less people. 40 years ago when I got married they made a typo on THEIR records on my name. My responsibility to get it corrected to get my Social Security.
Meanwhile under Biden, the forms themselves were made more readable, some forms could be filed online for the first time, and folks spent a lot less time waiting on the phone.
Yesterday I called Social Security. System advised a 90 minute wait time and offered a call back. I was called nearly 4 hours later. The representative was courteous and efficient and quickly resolved my problem. No way they can afford to cut half the workers.
Yeah. Media is just putting thumb on scale for “reform” as they know the unpopularity of payment cuts will most likely lead to deficit spending and they are habitual deficit scolds.
Years ago, my mom told me how well the SSA person on the phone had helped her navigate her options after her husband died. The help she got and the rep's knowledge was impressive and much needed. Smarts and competence found in real world (vs RW fantasy) govt reps. Sad to think it will be no more.

He would have no idea what to do with an AI kiosk or with an AI app.
It's like the status-quo bureaucracy understands the citizens it serves!
They especially love it when they believe they're talking to a person only to later realize they've been talking to a computer.
Old people are famous for enjoying the irony of that situation.

Disabilities the most.
Absolutely bonkers idea to replace agency phone staff with a call center ( maybe they’ll use prison labor to process SS numbers?)
Just crazy.

Already fed-up with shitty call centers?
Well, you're going to LOVE new AI bots...
AI program being installed by Elon, which means that only he/his team can fix it if sh!t hits the fan. Frightening.

When your only option is talking to a LLM rule book for any mistakes or appeals?
This ethos of “we can always fix it later,” doesn’t work in government which they want to end oversight & responsibility.
