A labor economist told KCUR's Up To Date that Kansas City does not have enough available jobs in the area to make up for all the local federal workers getting laid off by the Trump administration.

Kansas City and St Louis are Blue. More Blue than most of the rural areas in actual Blue states. So no, they didn't do it to themselves. The population centers in every Red state are Blue, they get dragged along unwillingly with the Red state nonsense, prisoners of their neighbors.
They want to make you poorer.
They want to make you sicker.
You are easier to control then.
Grow food people. Right where you are. I know it seems impossible or crazy - but if you have any land or community gardens - do it. It will keep you free.
Hey KCUR don't repeat the propaganda lie that Musk is 'cutting wasteful spending'. They're destroying the government to give themselves a tax cut and corruptly award themselves contracts for taxpayer money.
Don't forget they are firing all of the people investigating Elon's fraudulent business practices - every company he owns is under investigation, or was.
Unless?????
Will give you a sneak peak
“Thanks to Elon we have the greatest job growth in the history of jobs, I mean this is the biggest ever, more bigly that crooked Joe ever did, I don’t have the exact numbers but it was big”
“…for the federal workers being illegally and unconstitutionally fired by an unelected billionaire who thinks he’s a god and the WH just stated doesn’t actually have any authority to fire federal workers…”
Why do they keep saying laid off? They were fired. The reason given was poor performance making the filing for unemployment more arduous. Laid off implies they were not fired for cause. We know there was no cause, but the piece of paper they have says it is.
Someone gets it! Too bad 🍊 & Elon aren’t well versed in the economic relationship between jobs, unemployment rate, & reducing exports works (among other things). Of course, when you have billions, it doesn’t really matter to you.
Hmmmm, so you vote for Trump and then he snatches away your job, sounds about right. As I flutter my fan, how in tarnation are ya'll gonna afford those eggs and gas prices?!
why is NPR parroting the stated purpose of the layoffs as "cutting wasteful spending?" For every dollar we spend on the federal workforce, the US economy grows by the same amount. Stop Parroting their lies, this is not cutting "waste" but it is wrecking the US economy and labor force
Don't worry, Kansas City.... your local representatives are going to ban trans people from using the bathroom which should keep you all warm at night at $7.25/hr minimum wage.
Well what were you expecting
So far 75k people took the govt buyout
75000 specific resumes, where do they go?
Retail? That’s dead. Service industry? Ha People w/out jobs don’t shop or eat out
They don’t go on vacations
No job no healthcare
Supply/demand
no job=no demand Tank the economy & community
Worse than that, they actually believe it doesn't exist. Unemployment is a lack of personal initiative, so failure is simply the natural order for...um failures.
Sort of funny how, for these people, natural selection and evolution operate everywhere except in biology.
Further to the point, if you are homeless, you don’t, typically, go out in the country somewhere and cobble up a lean-to. You go to a city and see what you can scrounge or a job, even if begging. So, red, blue or green, the homeless are found in cities.
Here’s what I wonder, tho… so much of our divide is not red state vs blue state so much as urban vs rural and college ed vs working class. Kansas City’s a blueish dot in a red sea. If the effects of layoffs are confined to urban areas and don’t really reach red areas, then it won’t chg Trump votes.
Farmers are going to suffer, and soon (also later). USAID contracts have been cancelled, probably 10% of the workforce that process their subsidies have been fired and locked out, the undocumented workers that they depend on to harvest are too scared or gone. All before any terrifs.
Oh, I’m not happy for anyone to lose their job. It stinks. And I’ve got a fair number of Trumpy relatives in PA & OH - not farmers, more in rust belt areas - for whom I feel a good bit of sympathy. I think the loss of manufacturing jobs and a lot of the country’s indifference to that…
really did push a lot of ppl toward Trump originally. 100% agree we shd listen to ppl and win back votes where we can. But… tho I’m not happy w anybody losing a job, I also think the only thing that’ll change a lot of votes in red districts is if Trump’s actions affect red districts.
That’s a good point, I guess that gets to the root of my Q. Will layoffs among gov’t professionals be felt in rural areas, or are those two economies, at least in KC area, kind of decoupled?
Also KC area feds include NARA, the Federal Reserve, the FBI, who knows how many HUD jobs. Probably one of the main top employers in that area of the Midwest not just MO or KS. These jobs don't exist elsewhere.
The cuts to federal agencies & funds are affecting rural areas already. Farmers cannot apply for grant programs b/c the federal officers were fired, plus no one knows which grants are actually being funded anymore. A farm reporter just said he can’t advise farmers on programs b/c of the uncertainty.
Same for cattle ranchers & feed lots, egg producers, ag product suppliers, etc. Folks who thought they had gov’t funding don’t or can’t confirm if they’ll get it, businesses dependent on farmers getting subsidies are preparing for defaults, banks are looking at farm foreclosures. It’s going to suck.
I’d *like* to think it’d reach red areas, bc that is the only thing that’ll chg Trump voters’ minds. And maybe it will. But maybe the urban college+ economy is decoupled enough from the rural wc economy that there won’t be much spillover.
The people being laid off live all over the kc metro area, even if the work is located downtown. It will hit suburbs, exurbs, and urban communities alike.
Are those suburbs & exurbs pretty Trumpy? Not arguing w you, just curious to know. Bc I don’t know KC region at all, and just don’t know how much hurt wl be felt by Trumpish neighborhoods.
Federal workers are, by and large, just as “Trumpy” as any other group of middle-class people. Some are all in. Some despise him with the passion of a thousand subs. Many are clueless about politics.
Yet the work of the federal government went forward anyway, without much partisanship. Until now.
I mean it’s like another city, right? Dem core, mixed suburb, red the further you go out. Much like the rest of the country they leaned further right this past election.
I think how these right wing folks consume the news of the economy tanking is the most important variable. There is a huge propaganda machine that will skew the facts and blame Dems for these economic issues. And these people will believe because they want to believe it
Missouri went heavily for Trump but a lot of these folks are from Kansas City, Missouri, which is Kamala country, so don't overdo the schadenfreude, folks.
My sister, her husband and their friends live in Kansas City, MO, and they are all MAGA. BIL is retired and on Social Security while my sister is on disability. They may soon see their incomes affected - good, they voted for this! Too bad all the non-Trumpers also have to suffer.
This an entirely foreseeable outcome of the massive nationwide layoffs/firings of Federal workers: a saturated labour market with too few jobs available. Given the impending impact of trump’s trade wars, fully expect the highest unemployment in recent history. With no safety net.
It’s maddening! These are people. We all will ride through the FO. It will be a house of cards too. Slashing much needed government employees. Failures will lead to disfunction. Tariffs will punch manufacturing & construction. Ripping away Social Security, SNAP, Medicare, Medicaid, housing. Very Bad
Thank you, I live in MO & I sure in the hell didn't vote for that vile pig or that piece of shit Josh Hawley. I live in deep MAGA cult country & had Biden/Harris & Lucas Kunce yard signs in my front yard. To be honest, I'm surprised I didn't get shot at. Sad, but true.
What really sucks for us is that the parts of the state that voted for Harris, KCMO & STL, are going to be hit hardest. Fuck the idiot red voters in our state.

We would get a lot more traction if we find some way to unite. Farmers are definitely regretting their vote and even Bannon is throwing daggers at fElon.
Ah here - that might have worked if there wasn't 4 years of Trump already. Zero sympathy for them wanting a convicted, sex offending, bankrupt felon over a qualified, educated black woman.
Yes, not disagreeing with the sentiment, but remember the enemy of my enemy is my friend. We can sort the differences out later.
Some people have to learn the hard way🤷♂️but if they're out there helping now, I wouldn't discourage it or silence their dissent. In fact, I would encourage it.
Of course.
I'm also think the election wasn't free/fair & it's been going on a long time. Voter suppression alone could account for election loss. But I also believe "shy Rep voters that don't answer polls" & "KH voters didn't show up" are lies to cover up more.
Still, even one DJT voter is not OK
Definitely knew this was coming. But once people start dying of diseases that RFKJr lets run rampant, and the undocumented immigrants (and some with legal status) are gone, there will be job openings.
The cost will actually go up. Undocumented immigrants do the awful work at slaughterhouses and back-breaking labor on farms. Pair that with tariffs, reciprocal tariffs bankrupting our farmers, and anything DOGE cuts for agriculture...buckle up.
More than a third of the KS population lives in the four counties between Topeka and the MO border (KC) and would be most affected by DOGE cuts. Unfortunately, their numbers aren't enough to carry the state.

Also, fired government workers will not have the income to support local businesses, so private sector jobs will become more scarce and unemployment will increase. The housing market will be threatened. And firings have only just begun.
Yup. There are a lot of towns, counties, etc. that only exist because of government jobs and the secondary services that grow up around them. Some of those areas will depopulate and disappear.
Ironically, this will probably be more heavily felt in red states which, due to their low populations and higher rural/urban ratio, are much more likely to have the economies of entire towns and counties based around a single government office or project.
Probably? He’s started a global trade war at the same time. The rest of the world is boycotting US products and travel. Trump has made the US a pariah state. There is no good coming from any of this. Putin just won the Cold War with Trump’s help.

Bootstraps?
I’m not advocating the violence, but it’s starting to feel inevitable. 😩
They want to make you sicker.

Gonna get worse.
That’s the goal for Trump - inflict pain on all Americans except billionaires

Delay is annoying from the perspective of ripping off the bandaid ASAP but good for making it clearer that Donald owns the coming economic downturn.
And up to 1,000 of those fired federal employees are in Kansas City.
Allow me quote Condi Rice:

Sincere sympathy to blue voters. Trump voters live with your decision, no complaining.
Trump/Vance lied about everything & said they had nothing to do with Project 2025 & ran on bringing grocery prices down.
All the more reason to kick them out. They are illegitimate grifers & we the American people don't want them.

Drunken, drug-addled, deviant, or doddering, they have absolutely cornered the market on ignorance, incompetence, and complete delusion.
Except the SCOTUS ruled you can stop those without bones from camping on public land, sweep up all their stuff and throw it out...
