People are conditioned by TV and movies to think a lot of murders are tough puzzles the detectives solve but the vast majority are either obvious culprits (e.g. guy murders his girlfriend or guy robs a liquor store and shoots the clerk) or essentially unsolvable (drug dealer kills other drug dealer)

I work in midtown a few blocks away from the murder. There must have 50, 60 cops about that day on 45th @ 6th just standing there. I was so puzzled. Were they here for the tree lighting, theater matinees or to spot the killer? I’d bet first two over the killer cause they were doing nothing!

serial killers are also commonly police as their day jobs, so I'm sure the fact so many suspects are fellow officers causes a bias in the investigators, who pursue mostly non-LE suspects as they have a hard time imagining it could be "one of their own"

The opposite of how its shown on TV: by design, overwhelmingly useful of obtaining jury convictions in cases where the culprit is obvious, *not* for identifying who the killer is in cases where you don't already have that information.

Also, pretty much anything beyond DNA, fingerprints, or other physics or chemistry based analysis, is junk science. Bite marks, ballistic matching, fire burn patterns - apparently all of this is either straight up bullshit, or a combination of vibes and some high-level variable elimination.

Police make good money. Even the reported salaries are decent, and don't include overtime "worked" (a lot).

Also in most places police officers get to go hang out places off the clock and get paid large amounts for that. I'm sure it isn't a protection racket in some cities, but in mine it sure is.
