the fact that people all over the country who are squeezed by housing costs hear stories about relatives moving to Florida and Texas and improving their material conditions despite overall GOP misgovernance because there is a lot of housing is a huge headwind for the Dems.

I truly believe that NIMBYism, the ensuing crisis of housing supply in America’s cities, and its manifold, rippling, ramifying effects, amounts to slow seppuku by the Democratic Party.

the ‘no state income taxes and possibly houses to live in’ has its appeal
but ‘will jail you for fucking anything whenever they feel like it’ kinda subtracts from that beyond the beneficial aspects of moving there

They totally are
The housing is fine. In general new housing is better than old housing, which is actually crap.
Unfortunately, almost everyone benefits from that (or thinks they do) so the chances of something being done about it are pretty poor.
"Improving material conditions" until the weather changes
Hard to imagine that there's just so much housing being sold in uninsurable flood zones, enough to tip the scales in the way we're seeing.
Dems should constantly talk about what happens when republicans run cities/states into the ground
variety of reasons, but a big cost of living difference was an important consideration. Going into retirement we need affordability. Literally everything is cheaper.
