Read reviews of Troopers from when it released. Media literacy was a scarce resource in the 1990s. It’s a miracle any fun movies got released during that time.

This aspect completely eluded me when I was a kid. I was confused why the Buenos Aires kids were extremely white but just chalked it up to Hollywood being Hollywood. Didn’t occur to me that if it was just that, they would’ve moved the setting entirely. Made it Sacramento or whatever.

Verhoeven claimed for years (maybe still claims) to have never read the book. His contempt for the source material is palpable. I frequently refer to it as a movie-length book report rather than an adaptation. Also, Jonny Rico is Filipino in the same way that Friday is a woman – not very much so.
