One of my pet peeves as an environmental journalist is when people go on and on about how "toxic" our environment is.
Bitch, compared to what?
100 years ago women were literally eating radium (radioactive substance) for work
Lead was in everything
So was arsenic /1

My point: we should consider nonhuman exposure too.
But people used to put chalk in milk. Coke used to have literal cocaine like...
But like, Google the great smog of London, Google the cuyahoga river fires. In nyc in the 80s medical waste used to was up on shore now people go whale watching
the fire department would come put it out and leave, then the fire would start again
Another is that there's just more people so all the old solutions (just toss it out back) no longer work.
Sure as f--k don't want to go back to that, though. Worth remembering how bad it was not that long ago.
OR watching global media (wrt poor air quality and "wear a mask to go outside" conditions)
... we just have fewer ways to dilute or hide things now b/c everything is more populated and developed, so it's all much more visible and we know to look for it too.
I CAN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE 🎶
they banned DDT and now there are BALD EAGLES in the Boston suburbs
People drove multiple states to see them!
One of the coolest things when I visited the Oregon Zoo w/nibling last summer was seeing the stuff about their conservation work with condors (and the condors themselves, they got WINGSPAN)
or maybe the original 7-Up that had lithium in it
but I bet the cocaine cola would be ACES for my ADHD
Oh and they dumped toxic waste into our groundwater giving everyone cancer and now it's Superfund lol
We're not the dumbest species, we're just more capable in poisoning ourselves.

(The book is non-fiction. The movie was more historical fiction)
Have you considered that while you are speaking truth, it may also be true that they could be comparing one of the many places that was pristine 100 years ago and now is in fact toxic? Just a thought. No attack.
By the time I was 7 they cared enough about lead paint to recall the Star Wars glasses at Burger King, but that was NEW
