not to get all debate club about it but whenever i post about the atomic bombings not being necessary people disagree with me by alluding to a historical consensus that they were (which is untrue) or doubting me because i'm not a historian, both appeals to authority that don't address the arguments

To any observer, he is a deep authority: fought in Korea with a history degree.
The dude got fired 15 years later for touching a kid.
arguably a just war, but the allies did not fight it with clean hands
Like, yes, soldiers are likely to have done things that would not be conscionable in civilian life, but some people - not you - use that to excuse far more than is necessary
I think there's a difficult to stomach element of rage there, maybe humans aren't capable of turning that cheek.
we didn't want to share
imagine, we could have had a north and south Japan situation!
the first shot fired in the cold war
Out of all the people in history they picked him when they, obviously, had to leave out pretty much EVERYTHING.
Why not pick ANYONE else?
Am baffled to this day.
How could anyone claim consensus in light of that fact?
While some have contended his take on things was a bit revisionist, that may only strengthen the case against consensus.
idk why people aren't eager to question history class.
Many lies must be unlearned
*the US pretends to not listen, and got the UNODA director fired when he called them out

1. Test their new weapon
2. Let everyone know they had it
3. Prevent the USSR invading Japan
That's all, nothing more.
5. Save their careers because after years of extensive pro war propaganda, accepting a conditional surrender would have ended a lot of politician's careers
No one ever mentions that Japan was already trying to sue for peace or that the US really just didn't want the Russians involved (and wanted to end imperial Japan).
"deranged. intimidating. but also, i sense kindness, and warmth. a creature worthy of befriending."
but some in the US were giddy to drop the bomb and so they did, mind you: on non military targets.
You wouldn't say the holocaust wasn't outlandish, and you rightfully would recoil at anyone suggesting it, but both were completely unnecessary violent acts against civilians.
"...whenever i post about the atomic bombings not being necessary people disagree with me"
me:
"it's not that outladish…" to think that!
that = the atomic bombings not being necessary
