Today is the 60th anniversary of the death of Margaret Dumont, a seasoned actress who endured every affront the Marx Brothers hurled at her as their foil. Dumont died knowing she'd be falsely accused of not getting the jokes:
"That was the job, you dumb assholes," she rasped at the end. "Christ."

Thank you.
Well you wouldn’t get much satisfaction out of that.
Groucho was always funny.
Not sure it's more technically demanding.
Chico? Really?
If you don’t know who we are I feel sad for you.
For those that get it, I appreciate you even more.
Next time you VOTE, choose leaders who serve the public, NOT THEMSELVES. #VoteWisely
This is a pic of me dressed as Groucho
I’d love to know more about her!

Also that’s a grave marker to rival Jack Lemmon’s.
Margaret: “oh my, really?”
Graucho: “yes, mind if I pull the other one?”
It was always full and most people knew the dialogues by heart.
One of the best memories of my teenage years.
Loved it!
"Oh, so it was murder then!"
“If I was any closer to ya, I’d be in back of you!!
#priceless
Of course she got the jokes!
So did Jean Stapleton

No wonder we have a "reality TV" president.
perspective is Everything
man-o-man, always with the unattributed..what’s up with that??
OTOH, at least half of MY quote came directly from the horse’s mouth aka Wikipedia.
Maybe one reason her character resonates so deeply is that both eras share a common thread: income inequality, Did the Robber Barons of the 20's resemble Musk and his billionaire bros?
She was the best straight woman in the biz.
Also Groucho: "I'm fighting for your honor, which is more than you've ever done!"
Wonderful comedienne, their movies wouldn't have been the same without her.
One of the best exit lines in history.
💜💜💜
Groucho called her "practically the fifth Marx brother", said that because of their 7 movie appearances, many people believed they were married in real life, & named her in his acceptance speech for his 1974 honorary Oscar.
2. Groucho only mentioned 5 people in that acceptance speech, and didn't include Gummo nor Zeppo, who were both alive then.
Dumont: Why, marry you?
Groucho: You marry me and I'll take a vacation. I'll need a vacation if we're going to get married. Married! I can see you right now in the kitchen, bending over a hot stove. But I can't see the stove.
I hope you understand.
Groucho: Don't be silly. I'll write you twice a week.
“I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member”.
Mrs. Teasdale: Why, he's dead.
RF: I bet he's just using that as an excuse.
MT: I was with him to the very end.
RF: No wonder he passed away.
MT: I held him in my arms and kissed him.
RF: Oh, I see, then it was murder.
Mrs. Teasdale: He left me his entire fortune.
RF: Is that so? Can't you see what I'm trying to tell you? I love you.
(This might be my favorite exchange between them!)
