Chips are in everything. Most complex chips come from Taiwan. So, everything becomes waaaay more expensive. Looks like we go back to the 1950s. Break out the dial phones!
“Can someone please tell Donald Trump that the only people in the British Indian Ocean Territory are the U.S. base at Diego Garcia?” reacted British Conservative politician Oliver Cooper. “He’s taxing an American military base.”
10% on a US military base!
Waltz’s team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
It’s a more extensive use of the app than previously reported.
Trump admin’s national security team relies on Signal.
Waiting for the next journalist to get invited to the chat detailing the plans for all the strategic bombers moving to Diego Garcia and a second carrier group into the Middle East. Could be that Iran is already in the group chat by invite from Hegseth or Waltz mind you....
With all the unemployed people in the United States, what would solve? This problem is open up these factories, better producing products we use and need in the united states. And then we won't have to be worrying about all these tariffs.. We used to produce basically everything we needed long ago
Nvidia has a market cap of $2.69 trillion. Nvidia is a true American success story. All Nvidia chips are made by Taiwan Semiconductor Corporation (TSMC). They are made in Taiwan. The TSMC fabs being built in Arizona thanks to Joe Biden's chips act are older technology than their Taiwan fabs.
So dump Biden’s CHIP program that’s building a facility in Sunnyvale. Then jack up the prices on available chips? Kill the economy of Taiwan and make it vulnerable to Beijing? This admin is dumber than a bag of hammers.
Yes but it might be part of their plan. Let Taiwan fall to China, Ukraine and Eastern Europe to Russia, and the United States of Trump will take over North America down to Panama.
Thank you. There is no master plan. His reasoning is "I like tariffs and I can just do them and people will beg me to remove them so I can ask for anything I want."
And there's no one left to tell him his reasoning is really, really stupid.
"President Trump is invoking his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977 (IEEPA) to address the national emergency posed by the large and persistent trade deficit that is driven by the absence of reciprocity in our trade relationships" - WH
You should know that “tech” doesn’t support Trump at all. Rich CEOs support Trump, either because they’re scared of what he could do to their company or because they want tax breaks.
So what’s the tipping point for them? What gets them out to the streets? Or one of the questions I kept asking Texas tech folks at SXSW till I gave up: “Why the F do you live and pay taxes in the same town where Greg Abbot is killing people and denying human rights?”
I honestly think that it’s living in ultra cool Blue Austin or SF or LA on high salaries and cool projects that keeps them quiet and pretending that their CEO’s or platforms aren’t enabling autocracy and making billionaires even richer.
Yeah there’s a bunch of truth to that. They’re well paid and they do work they mostly like. And San Francisco is expensive as hell to live in. It’s not a surprise that many people work in companies that they aren’t 100% aligned with.
The higher order question you could be asking is, “why the hell do you live in America given its history and president” and the answer would be the same, “I’m not directly responsible for things done in my name, I’m in a good bit, I don’t have easy options to leave or support myself elsewhere”
It’s not hard to check. You can just look at the counties with the highest salaries in the Bay Area and see how they vote. They overwhelmingly vote Democrat.
probably you are right, however the most prominent figures from top tech companies are aligned with musk and his broligarch tech nazi vision of satelite states and AI god, so there is a bit of disonance here
Nah. 37 is close to 39? good try but sounds like what qanon would do. I’d try but I can’t see all the numbers. Who is going to build and then work in all the new mfg facilities that we will supposedly need? My grandchildren? That’s at least 20 years from now. I thought he promised day 1.
It would help if the screenshot was legible. I also see others claiming the same and here's CoPilot. What they call "trade barrier" is the gap in trade between the U.S. and other nations as a percentage.
Figure out whatever your income taxes, whatever tax bracket you’re in and then add an additional 20% on average for all your purchases.
It’s all tax going to the government, but the tax from the tariffs could be going into his special sovereign fund.
Making the dollar worthless so his bitcoin currency idiocy will make him, he believes, more wealthy. It won't work but it will destroy America in its wake.
The serious side of that is if you read the papers and viewpoints of his economic advisors, some of the reasons for the loss of manufacturing is that the US dollar is the fiat currency for trade. Increasing demand for it. The advisors don't seem to factor in the ability for sanctions and banking.
Is it actually 42%? My understanding is all countries start at a base 10% tariff and then you add on what he has on the charts for each country. Please correct me if I am wrong!
Zuckerberg was at WH today. while Trump slapped a 32% tariff on Taiwan—where the chips for his VR headsets are made. Imagine paying billions to build the metaverse, only to get kneecapped by your own photo op.
Fuck these people, but I think it's important to remember they weren't exactly huge Trump fans before he got elected. They're cowardly fascists, not people dumb enough to think tariffs would help their business

As of yesterday before these tariffs took effect, I had a client server cluster for a small town bank go from 37k in late February, to 43k at the end of March. That's still before these ones applied. I'm glad they got the approval to eat the 6k because they chose correctly to order now.

He’s just making it easier for China who by the way, with all these distractions are having live fire military drills around Taiwan and mapping underwater communication cables around Australia with spy ships warships and submarines.
@adamkinzinger.bsky.social — don’t worry, his top donors were all told in advance and bought/sold whatever they needed to in order to cover or profit. The entire scheme is corrupt from top to bottom. There’s no logic other than benefitting himself and donors.
And Drumpf is as illiterate when it comes to tech as he is to written language. Every thought he ever had is from someone speaking in his ear. Most likely one or more of those little kids of his.
Biden’s chips act that only a few republicans supported, brought good high paying jobs to America. Infrastructure projects, real jobs! Republicans voted against, but took credit for!
No, we know Trump is an asshole, but if you ever wanted just a quick bit of evidence, look at the fact that he's not even sparing El Salvador, after they went and gave him his extranational concentration camp and everything.
Is the goal to just throw grenades, then sit back in the Oval Office, as international leaders phone, begging to make a deal? What if countries band together to say: no begging for deals?
It's going to suck. You know how many chips are in one PC? I need a new one, but I think I'll wait. Just find used parts to swap out if something dies.
What Elon Musk and Donald Trump are doing to the United States is a betrayal of the highest order. It's a war. The intentional destruction of an entire nation. The total demolition of our institutions and its essential services.
These tariffs are outlandish I have to conclude he’s purposefully destroying our country. Again. Did he put tariffs on Russia?(not that we get much from them I’d assume)
Yes isn't funny how he choses who gets what amount of tariffs. These smaller countries with their smaller population are not buying as much of American products as we do of theirs. Imagine that.
US will be hardest hit of all. Simple math since US will be 100% exposed to the trade war. EU is only exposed by 1/5 of that (export share to US)
Plus, the rapid implementation is a catastrophe.
If US would do this in a normal way they would give companies 3-5 years to adjust before it hits.
When I was an importer; when a shipment was ready I filled out a form, calculated the tariff due, and wrote the check. It would not have cleared customs upon arrival without that. Nobody in the country of origin paid a dime. Doesn't everyone know this?
So? Vets voted overwhelmingly for him even after he called them "suckers and losers" & got them killed for purely political reasons. He knows that they will believe whatever red meat Faux Noise lays out for them so why should he give a shit?
He knows they hurt the poor, while leaving billionaires relatively unscathed. (in fact, the billionaires can make BANK by buying like crazy after trump crashes the economy)
So, yeah, he & the republicans know very well how they work.
Perhaps Trump should check the list of U.S. companies that rely on chips from TSMC. Hint: The top 10 include Apple, Qualcomm, AMD, Nvidia, Broadcom, Tesla, Intel, Google, Microsoft, and AWS.
The view from the UK.. Trump's game is up... He has nowhere to go internationally...Promised big. Delivered nothing... And can't because he's being played by a smarter leader...

They are about to be cut off from those just like China in 2022
The existing machines can be bricked at distance by no maintenance and needed services
The Chinese figured this out already
When it becomes clear how badly this was a f*** up, even the cult will get mad at him.
Some older MAGA types will have earing aides and pacemakers. Most are made in Taiwan.
Hear no evil, not alive to vote for evil.

Millions of people watched her wipe the floor with him.
Do the men in this country who voted for him not believe a woman? Is it because of her heritage? Or because she is black?
You really can't fix stupid!
Or do you prefer to have the country be ripped off just so you can have cheap avacado toast
And there's no one left to tell him his reasoning is really, really stupid.

Well Russia and then China.
It’s all tax going to the government, but the tax from the tariffs could be going into his special sovereign fund.
Tax out-of-pocket could be 50%-70%
I'm sure American companies will have no problem paying their workers more money to offset the huge price increases due to unionized work.
Big bet
Find an April 5th protest and get there!
Boycott all MAGA owned businesses and churches too!

They’re preparing already and America will never accelerate chip manufacturing fast enough.

Do you smell a rat?
China asked for this huh?
Let’s be more beholden to China especially since we owe trillions to them already.
Jus’ saying…
Does this mean we start making chips in Fremont again? At the old Ford factory? Oh, wait. Tesla is already going bankrupt there....
Oops ~ wrong kind of chips
Years of pussyfooting around the subject, worrying about war, and suddenly it's a fait accompli announced as a footnote in economic news.
How is China going to react?
