Screencapped this from KTLA’s live broadcast, reporter says the cars here abandoned as fire nears this area, so I guess John Bladerunner had to hike out. Eerie image: tops of the palm trees burst into flames first.
I grew up in L.A. The closest thing I have to a hometown. This breaks my heart. As a kid, we called the Santa Ana winds, "The witch winds", cuz they were warm. Strange when they blew in during cold weather. I loved growing up in the City of Angels. 😕🙏
I remember the mudslides shutting down PCH every spring during the rainy season & having to drive all the way up to Agoura Hills & go the long way around just to get to Santa Monica.
Just saw a YT short yesterday on this. It proves these idiots know absolutely nothing about how anything works and literally fell for tik tok conspiracies
Hoping everyone is okay 👌, will get help they need ,no complaints but from now on what needed to be done to prevent this or attend such incidents in fure ASAP. Speedy recovery ,RIP to those lost their lives and may God be with love ones .
Pacific Palisades is an affluent residential neighborhood tucked between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Pacific Ocean. It is part of LA County. The public schools are part of LAUSD.
Even worse was the fire at Agua Caliente park about that same time. More than 75 palms were damaged, with about 40 having to be removed entirely. Luckily the park has been restored to its natural beauty. Pima County Parks and Recreation really run a pretty tight operation, in my opinion.
That is almost certainly not the problem. 100 mph winds, no rain this far into the year, hundreds of acres on fire, and thousands asked to evacuate. It's not the palm trees.
LA is in the process of trying to decide if they want to spend millions to replace all the palm trees, or just them die because they’re not native, set fire easily, are home to rats and provide no shade
Why did they plant the palm trees in the first place? Just for a tropical/warm feel? According to Steinbeck, the eucalyptus is for a wind break to prevent erosion on farm land, but I’m not sure how that applies to the city proper of LA
euc is kind of a weed by now. Nobody's planting them, because they're such a hazard (shallow roots, very tall, very heavy). And very expensive to remove. So while they don't survive el nino storms very well, they do otherwise thrive, and spread rapidly in that climate. At least along the coast.
Palms are tall, bendy, and catch quickly but burn long. That combination close to homes means your tree will likely fling embers onto or close to your homes. But go ahead and worry more about the need to have the aesthetics of this non-native tree.
Jacaranda aren't native to anywhere in the US. Trees native to southern California don't go up like tinder boxes because they've adapted to the dry climate and the natural burn cycles.
The tops of trees bursting into flames ahead of the fire front is terrifying to experience. In Australian bushfires it can be a huge contributor to rapid expansion of fire fronts, because eucalyptus trees are incredibly flammable.
Wonder if xeriscaping the area would help with the fire issues.
... People who aren't plant nerds like me just want pretty vegetation. Even if it creates hazards.
☹️
PACK NOW! People, papers, medicine, nonperishable food for people/pets.
A full change of clothes for people.
You need to be ready to pull out of that driveway like your ass was on fire!
Otherwise, it might be!
Looks like a screenshot from a playstation 2 game. That fog is a dead giveaway due to limited draw distance. Also the vehicles are good for the time, but you can tell there are polygon limitations with the blocky car in the picture.
If the Hawaii fires give us any clues that thing will likely catch fire and when it does it will take thousands of gallons of water and several days to extinguish while the battery discharges.
I usually thought of wildfire season as a summer event...until I read Fire Weather. How fires start and more
..how they act..scared the crap out of me. I recommend everybody read that book.
I actually cannot fathom the allure of the skip on wheels .. I hope Californians keep safe .. Feel sorry for the animals that will die through no fault or choice of theirs that this shit is raining down on our planet
It's winter. There has been NO RAIN all winter so far, as in zip nada zero.
It's of course not an area that has a HIGH amount of rainfall, it was considered a Mediterranean climate, but winter rains are something that normally happens. And it hasn't. Desertification, I don't know, collapse really.
These are very unusual wins. I've only seen it a few times before this. The first wave came from the ocean now it's Santa Ana. Interesting there there's no climate change thank you Donald. We're wasting money on climate change. You're so smart Donald. Thank you you fuck
Just out of curiosity because I don’t live in a wildfire prone area (yet) does auto insurance cover vehicles that couldn’t be extricated from the fires ?
i'll never understand why anyone would want to live in a desert. I'd honestly be fine with cutting off all funding for Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Las Vegas, Southern California...and forcing the morons that choose to live in the desert to fend for themselves.
I fell in love with that vehicle in the film, and used to enjoy passing on my way to work every day during my commute from the San Fernando Valley to Mar Vista, when it was parked on Cahuenga Blvd. in front of the shop of the guy who designed and built it, and LOTS of film cars.
OMG!! I thought the same thing! That movie was SO BAD that it was actually good! Jan-Michael Vincent was at a high point in his career, but geez - this movie was pretty bad!
I’m in the Willowbrook area and can’t even stay outside long because of the smoke and soot falling in the sky. Prayers to everyone who lost their homes in the fire. It’s tragic
It might actually take the White House itself getting caught in a wildfire, and even then I can't guarantee it would convince Republicans of climate change.
Show me proof of his existence? Why doesn't he want to help his creation when they beg for food and shelter, and why doesn't he stop famine? Violents? Even killing children with cancer? Yet he would rather kill his own creation like we're sims? He did that before apparently
Maybe I’m missing something, but of all the years I’ve lived here, I don’t remember fires happening in the winter. Ain’t it supposed to be a summer thing?

Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't on YouTube has talked about it but i can't remember which episodes
Indigenous Australians had active fire management practices for tens of thousands of years, and then white fellas came along and ignored them. :(
A full change of clothes for people.

Let me know if you’d like a cookie recipe later. I don’t have one, but I could probably make one up if the need arises!
By the way, can you read this for me? Trying to set up a new account, and it’s a pain

Let me have an original thought!
except for the fire ofc
..how they act..scared the crap out of me. I recommend everybody read that book.
never gonna be remembered as an act of protest or a tragic accident either way
just "lol 2025 fr fr"
lived in the PNW my whole life and at this point everything is on fire all the time it just doesn't register anymore
You know, since Drumpf doesn’t like dogs (WHO doesn’t like dogs?!?! 🤯) he needs a ‘pet’
If you use your microphone to look it up on google she'll say "a non-fiction scientific book..."
Hmm, I wonder who did that...
Just kidding. It’s awful.
I bet this is his fault every single natural disaster
25 years after....
That is SO GOOD!!!
Not making fun of the tragedy in LA.
I've seen mushrooms consume a fallen tree in 7 days. your rakes are powerless here.

My mom worked right up the street from it.
